Please God Please Mother Nature that giant vortex we call Isabel? The one with 200+mph winds? Can you make it not hit us? I know humanity needs a wake-up call. All of this fighting amongst humans does indeed pale compared to Isabel. This storm is more powerful then all the armies and missiles of all sides of all wars going on now combined. Maybe you do need to remind us, I know we're long overdue for a big one [1985 was pretty big, but we got real lucky] so, I'm torn on the issue. I don't want anyone harmed.

Yeah, whatever. I don't trust those weather people. The NOAA website today said that there were high surf warnings, small craft advisories, rain and thunderstorms forecast for today in addition to high winds and 5-7 foot seas off of long island.

GUESS WHAT? I went out of Montauk today and found clear blue skies, smooth seas, and tons of fish. If they're predicting a hurricane for next week, well, I'd better get started on tying some albie flies now because with their batting average it will be the best weekend yet!

I think they're just trying to make all the people who had summer shares in coastal areas feel better that they basically didn't have a single nice weekend all summer.

I don't think this storm is going to hit us, if it does it looks like the brunt of it if it hits land will slam into the south by the Carolinas which is fine by me. Usually that kind've thing takes all the wind out of the storm and reduces it to a tropical storm.

I could be wrong, but all it takes is some change in the atmosphere and this storm will go further out into the ocean and not affect anyone. Within the next day we should have an idea where this thing is headed.

You can keep track of it at Terry's BNL (http://wx1.bnl.gov/weather/WxMaps.jsp) which has great images and maps tracking the storm.

Plus the National Hurricane Center (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/)

I grew up in Virginia Beach. For us, hurricanes are usually an excuse to have a party.

I hadn't been paying much attention to this one until my mom told me today that for the first time ever, she and my dad are going to the mountains to wait out the storm. My mom has lived through 58 hurricane seasons, and she's got a bad feeling about this one.

The weather folks are in full tizzy; the local ABC station (whose weather man, Doug Hill, is a dead ringer for "Kent Brockman") spent the first 20 minutes doing nothing but panty twisting. They kept stressing that while it has weakened, it could also gain strength.

Right now the "worst" scenerio for DC is also the most likely scenerio, which is that if it goes to the west of the city, Washington could see 90-100 mph winds on Thursday.

The Virginia Gov has already (!) declared a state of emergency, while in Norfolk they are going to send three of the four battleships docked there out to sea. If this is as bad as they fear it might be, Virginia Beach expects it to be the worst storm there in 200 years.

Thankfully, where I live, there are seldom power outages (right next to Ft. Meyer and the Pentagon), but if it's as bad as all that, then who knows.

Just a couple more crappy weather days in a crappy weather year.

Hey! It was just a feeling I had when I saw the picture.

That and the fact that I live about a mile from the ocean; my brother and mother less then that.

As for us never getting hurricanes here; well something took away about a mile of Belmar/Spring Lake boardwalk very nicely since I've lived here. And that one MISSED. Gloria? 1992? 1985? cant remember.

And I have a nice coffee table book of pictures of houses; entire rows of houses just flushed out to sea from the Hurricanes that hit the Jersey Shore and places nearby early in the century. This place doesn;t get slammed often, but it does indeed get slammed.

But don't shoot the Messenger!!

"physcococialbe" <----Isabel's first on-land destruction.

<a href="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030916/ap_on_re_us/hurricane_isabel&cid=519&ncid=716" target="_blank">Residents on East Coast Brace for Isabel </a>
[quote]Residents up and down the East Coast boarded up windows Monday and the military ordered ships and planes out of harm's way as Hurricane Isabel churned toward land with 120 mph winds.

Forecasters said Isabel could hit anywhere from North Carolina to New Jersey late Thursday or early Friday.

Even though the storm was still at least three days away, coastal residents and military installations were already taking precautions.

Vice Adm. Gary Roughead, commander of the U.S. Second Fleet, ordered 40 ships and submarines based in the Norfolk, Va., area to head to sea Tuesday to avoid being battered against piers by high winds.

About 30 vessels, including two aircraft carriers, that cannot be moved were "being battened down as tight as possible, tightening all the hatches," said Lt. Scott McIlnay, a Navy spokesman.

Also Tuesday, the Air Force will fly about 60 planes from Langley Air Force Base in Hampton to Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana, said Capt. Jeff Glenn, spokesman for the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley.

Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner declared a state of emergency, putting National Guardsmen, state police and transportation crews on full alert.

At Taylor's Do-It Center hardware store in Norfolk, Va., assistant manager George Wolf said he was swamped with customers as soon as the doors opened at 8 a.m., and large batteries and flashlights were sold out.

"You would have thought we were giving stuff away," Wolf said. "I just sold my last 30 sheets of plywood."

Stevens Hardware in Annapolis, Md., ran out of batteries, flashlights, lamp oil, tape, camping lamps, can openers, plastic sheeting and candles before noon Monday, said manager Mike Stevens.

"A lot of people are calling for generators. I don't think there's a generator in Annapolis to be bought," Stevens said.

Officials in Baltimore canceled leave for staffers in the police, fire, transportation and public works departments.

"Right now we are preparing ... as if the storm is coming right at us," Mayor Martin O'Malley said.

At 11 p.m. EDT, Isabel was centered about 710 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, and was moving northwest at about 7 mph.

Isabel weakened Monday to a Category 3 storm with sustained wind blowing at 120 mph with higher gusts, the National Hurricane Center (news - web sites) said. On Sunday, Isabel's top wind hit 160 mph, making it a Category 5 storm.

"It has been weakening," said Eric Blake, a meteorologist with the Miami-based center. "That's good for the people of the East Coast, but by no means should anyone let their guard down. Hurricanes are notorious for gaining strength as they cross the Gulfstream. Even if it weakens to a Category 2 hurricane, there's still a lot of potential for danger."

Isabel is the first major hurricane to threaten the mid-Atlantic since Floyd wreaked havoc on the East Coast in September 1999, leading to 56 deaths.

All 921 residents of Ocracoke Island in North Carolina's vulnerable Outer Banks were ordered to begin evacuating Monday afternoon. A line quickly formed at the ferry dock.

In other islands on the outer banks, residents started boarding windows, moving their vessels inland and checking up on their generators.

Kay Burros and Anne Troutman decided it was time to check their 5,000-watt home generator at Surf City.

"We've had it about 3 years, but haven't cranked it up in a while. It's been so long, we have to read the instructions," Burros said.

Up the coast in Dover, Del., B.J. Whittaker snapped up 10 sheets of plywood at a Lowe's home improvement store. "I can't do anything if the roof blows off, but I can keep my windows from getting broken," he said.

Emergency officials in central and eastern Pennsylvania started planning for the growing likelihood that Isabel or its remnants would brin

Second of all, I'm supposed to go see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club play at the 9:30 Club that night. If the show gets cancelled and my roof DOESN'T blow off, Mother Nature and I are having some loud-as-nuts WORDS the next day.

Well, I think I was wrong, based on this current map it appears that nothing will be blocking this storm from hitting. Plus the latest probability score shows the chance of hitting NYC has gone up since yesterday. At this point it appears this will hit land in the Carolinas, it will most likely affect the New York area.

i lived in florida. hurricanes are just a big rain storm.

i was born in florida.

as to hurricanes; i let the data speak for itself:

------------------------------------------------
"Damn you, Andrew" was crudely spray-painted across the lone cement block wall of a crumbled residence in Homestead, Florida, in late August 1992. The graffitilike message wasn't the mischief of a local gang but was instead painted by a suburban mother of two left homeless after the storm trashed her house and overturned her world.
It was a trying time. South Dade County had been overrun by the mother of all hurricanes, a tempest that would be remembered by an entire generation as Florida's Great Storm.
Surviving the violence of wind and water on the morning of August 24, 1992, was just the beginning. For thousands of storm victims, the real test came in the weeks that followed as they tried to piece together their lives from their new quarters in the temporary shade of a National Guard tent.

Andrew was certainly a powerhouse when it hit Florida, a strong category 4 with all the trimmings. With winds that gusted to over 175 mph, it was less a meteorological freak than a chance encounter since storms of Andrew's magnitude don't often strike the United States. Records were broken when its winds and tides pummeled South Florida, a region quite familiar with the ways of vicious hurricanes.
But most Dade residents weren't around for the big storm in 1926 and only knew a few unpleasant stories about the lake victims in 1928 or the Keys in 1935. To those hammered by Andrew, the other storms didn't matter because they saw with their own eyes a seemingly endless display of hurricane destruction that surpassed the limits of imagination.

Only two other hurricanes, both category 5--the Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969--had been more powerful than Andrew in the United States during the twentieth century. Andrew's power was painfully evidenced in the broken, stripped, and tattered landscape of South Dade County after the storm.

Gov. Warner authorizes mandatory evacuations in Va.

By SONJA BARISIC , Associated Press
c September 17, 2003 | Last Upd@ted 12:23 PM Sep. 17

NORFOLK -- Gov. Mark R. Warner today authorized local officials to order mandatory evacuations of "risk areas" as Hurricane Isabel's projected track took aim at North Carolina and Virginia. Thousands of people were told to leave their homes in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Poquoson.

Poquoson initially ordered 2,000 people in vulnerable locations to evacuate but later expanded the order to include all 11,000 residents of the city bordered on three sides by the Chesapeake Bay, Assistant City Manager Judy Wiggins said. The evacuation was ordered by 10 a.m. Thursday.

My parents live in Poquoson. They left this morning before the evacuation order came through. My mom has some damn good intuition.

I'm real glad they got out ok, but wow that still has to suck, Bug Time. More power to them for Making the Call.

We had to evacuate once here at the NJ Shore; 1985?... police were just coming up and down the street ringing doors and calling. So we grabbed our stuff, this after I spent a day duct taping small windows and cutting 4x8 sheeting to cover up a big ass window.

We got to a hotel we reserved just in case about 20 minutes later. We were in the room for maybe 4 minutes when the Phone rang. Hotel had to Evacuate.

Long story short; I ended up with my family in a High School Gym for a while, came back home. House was ok. A mile of boardwalk was gone and ocean avenue in Belmar was about a foot deep in sand. Pretty amazing scene. I have photos somewhere...

And that one just grazed us.

Is Ronnie going to call his former girlfriend (looks like Helen Hunt) to measure the force of the Hurricane with his new invention? That would make a good show.
Maybe Fezzie can tag along.

Ron: Fez, bust out the old Winnebago, we're going in.

Fez: Are you sure it's safe Ronnie?

Ron: Didn't I tell you before I used to do this with my ex-girlfirend?

Fez: But I didn't believe you then.

The 2% probability is for the Center of the storm to make landfall directly at NYC; so that's not gonna happen [well; 2 out of 100...I think it's pretty good].

I'm heading to the beach, now; gonna take some pics...

well the weather channel dude said that the side of the building next door just came off, and 5 feet (vertically) of beach disappeared. If you want to get a feel for what 70 Mph gusts feels like, open your sunroof on the highway and stick your head out during a rainstorm.

The footage of the waves breaching the dune and flooding the road in Kill Devil should be awe inspiring enough. Those dunes there range from a couple of feet to 20 feet high and from 10 to 50 feet deep. This is on top of the 60 feet of beach that the ocean is currently reclaiming. Having been in one in my life, I dont want to do that again.

Trust me, it has been worse but it is bad.

Why would anyone NOT want to see one?

And to stop anyone from saying damage: That's what insurance is for.

I just went to a movie and expected to come out to all hell breaking loose. I was thoroughly unimpressed. Spending my life on the west coast, I've never experienced a hurricane or tornado. So I hope this gets better cause I don't want this to be like seeing an over-hyped movie, or like the first time a girl let me put it in her pooper.

No, I just thought it was going to feel like fucking God's blow-up doll, but it felt more like a one-finger hand-job. It was still cool cause I had my D in a chick's mud-cutter, I just thought it didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Well folks, Im activated. Tomorrow instead of going to my regular job, Im to call a # and report where they tell me. What I'll be doing is called "Restoration" which means, I'll be with another guy driving down streets, looking for down wires, reporting where fuses are blown and taking serveys of our electrical system. Wherever there is an outtage, we will go out trying to guage the extent of dammage and where to sent the tree trimming crews so the linesman can reassemble the electrical circuts that enable the phospherus to illuminate your computer screens so you can see these words. Hey, at least I'll be off the phones. Dont sick your rottweilers on me if you see me walking through your back yards, ok? I have pepper spray.

What a mess the last couple of days have been....

Lost power at home for the last 3 days, finally got it back this morning, lost power at my job, had to cover up everything and almost burned myself with dry ice, stupid people who don't know how to proceed at intersections where the lights go out and tear right thru them...yikes...

I now hate hurricanes...all of them. Not just Isabel, but add the Carolina Hurricanes to my hate list, the University of Miami Hurricanes, and Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.

I also would like to resolve to never drink a Hurricane if I ever make it to New Orleans...

2-1/2 days, no power.
Fortunately I was able to get out on the Potomac for a couple of days of delightful sailing.

The devastation at Coles Point Marina, where I sailed out of was something to see.

Large sections of roof over a bunch of slips were sent flying and landed on and often punctured boats in odd ways at odd angles.

Some dolts didn't tie their boats up properly and they beat the shit out of themselves against various pilings and such.

2 1/2 days? It's nothing. Pussy boy.

I've been without power since Thursday night. Which would upset me at any rate, but a good NINETY PERCENT of my neighborhood (in a good half mile radius from my home) have power, and have had it since Saturday morning. Meanwhile, I'm stuck living in the dark ages and typing this with what few minutes remain on my laptop batter which I was forced to charge all day at the fucking library.

I've wasted about 100 bucks on gas already for my generator just to keep the food in my fucking fridge from spoiling.

Dominion Power deserves death of the worst sort. The latest joke was that they said - on their automated system, of course, as they don't DARE put actual living souls on the phone lines, for fear of what may happen - they said that power would be on tonight by 11 p.m.

They have about an hour.

I'm not holding my breath.

All I can say is, if I don't have power tomorrow morning, heads will roll. I'm not taking another cold shower in the pitch black like I did this morning.

One more day of that, and I will grab my baseball bat and I'm going over to their HQ and start breaking some fucking kneecaps.

Brilliant, just brilliant.

From past experience, I knew it'd be a few days without power, so, having a few days notice, I ate stuff out of the fridge only, lowering my stocks of perishables.
Then, after the storm, I had a delightful 2 days on the Potomac on a lovely Cape Dory sailboat. We had a great time, as so many stayed in port we had the whole river to ourselves.
We had some fine food, the weather was nice enough for some skinny-dipping and we never ran out of beer.
When I got home, I threw out the bad food and restocked the fridge at a cost of about, oh, 20, 25 bucks, tops.
Plus, the whole time, I didn't have to listen to the noise of a generator making all that racket.

100 bucks, huh?

Hope it's not so bad for you next time.

Damn!
100 bucks, down the drain. By the way, what food did that 100 bucks preserve?
