I use to do alot of walking in my job, maybe 10 or so miles a day. I had to go in and out and around of hundreds of homes a day and my knees would start giving out after a while. Now, Im more sedentary in my job and I walk now just to keep in shape. I walked this morning about 6 miles and for the first mile, its a little rough, then once I get my "high" it gets really easy and relaxing. While Im walking, I get all flexible and it feels like I can go forever. Thing is, when I get home, I have to walk down a flight of stairs, and every time I go down the first step, I feel like my knees about to explode. Anyone have any suggestions? I try not to go to any doctors for anything usually.

The knee is a joint - bone and cartiledge and it WILL give out on anyone after alot of use if the muscles that support it are not strengthened regularly. I recommend doing strengthening excersises. If you cant get to a gym - which is by far the best option, because they have nautilus machines that will work each seperate muscle of the leg: thigh, calf, hamstring etc.
at home - try deep knee bends ( no more than 90 degrees at first) Calf Raises, and id buy some ankle weights - lie on floor on back hands behind hips to support lower back, and raise your legs with the weights strapped on to your ankles. raise about a foot high with each leg seperatly.
Going down stairs is notoriously bad for the knees. avoid it if you can. or go slowly and keep legs bent.
ALso stretch after doing the excersises. Elongating the muscles place less stress on the joints.
good luck
