Im thinking about getting a new TV and I have been looking in all the stores I go into, and I notice they seems awefully cheap all of a sudden. Im not talking plazma screens or anything, basically like a 20 inch screen or bigger with sterio speakers with a flat display and front and back AV jacks and the S video. I see great brands like Phillips, RCA, Magnavox and all them and they are like less than $140! Whats going on? Is the technology about to change and Im not aware of it and they are trying to practically given them away? Anyone know a brand they can recommend?

I've always liked Toshiba and Sony TVs, Can't go wrong there.

DTV isn't just a fad. DTV conversion has been mandated by the U.S. Congress.
All television stations must convert to digital format or go off the air. Stations must also support the current analog format until 2006 or until 85% of households have digital equipment.

couple the whole highdef tv coming soon, with the latest flat screen (plasma) stuff, so they have to lower the prices on the old tech stuff to keep it moving.
btw why is tv called a medium? Because it's neither rare nor well-done ;p

All I know is that I bought a General Electric television and in just over one year, the tv completely blew out. The guys at Circuit City were telling me that people shouldn't really buy, GE, RCA, Thompson or Apex because they use cheaper parts.

Go japanese (toshiba or Sony). Make sure it isn't really korean, though.
I just bought a 20" flatscreen toshiba for $250. It has 3 a/v inputs, one output and s-video as well as a handful of other features.
The quality is well worth the extra money, because if you go cheaper, your gonna wind up spending more real real soon.

Well, for those 'regular' TVs ie. cathode ray tubes, I'd say it's simply that it's pretty much old technology and due to mass production and miniturization plus some standards companies actually stick too = cheaper
Also, the Land of the Rising Sun has invested huge money to be at the forefront of frist the Widescreen format [most often a 16:9, as opposed to 4:3, a horrific aspect ratio for movies]; and plasma TVs.
Why plasma? I shit you not, I just read an article in Consumer Reports on Plasma. One of the main reasons it has developed as it has is due to the small space requirements in many homes/apartments/ dwellings.
Plasma is still new, but gaining fast. I'm pretty sure most models still have a finit life before the gas used in the system has to be replaced. I have seen some Stunning sets at Circuit City and 6th Ave Electronics here though; but the ones that rival the brightness of a flatscreen CRT still cost in the tens of thousands.
LCDs are getting bright but it's a tough manufacture; a few dead pixels can ruin a huge display; and the screen is essentially useless for most.
Front Projection LCD and triple gun system are cool as hell; you can get a 10 foot picture or more; but convergence, screen technology and the need for darkness factor in...
Personally, I like my $29.95 AM/FM/Flashlight/Solar/Crank radio.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. What about flat screen as opposed to slighly curved? I kinda like the flat screen look, and was trying to see if there was a reflective difference in the store, and I didnt truly notice and less reflections on the glass. Is it merely asthetics?

16:9, as opposed to 4:3
Isn't 4:3 the same as 16:9? Its the same ratio.
As far as flat screen, there is supposed to be less distortion than with the conventional tube.

It's not the same ratio. 4:3 would be the same as 16:12.

Im not a math guy, but is that conversion due to 4 times 3 = 12 , and 4 going into 16 three times? Just curious.

3 goes into 12 4 times
4 goes into 16 4 times
