Tourette's is about the most misunderstood phenomena. Perhaps second to Mental Retardation [the real name; Cadmuim and Teratogens don't 'Challenge' a body] It's funny because I wasn't thinking about the posts above, but there ya go...
Well, to help the view from the cheap seats, go out and find a copy of Oliver Sachs fantastic [and fantastically titled] book:
The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat
...and read about a guy who called himself Witty Ticky Ray.
Fuck it, I'm up I'll give you the condensed version.
Ray has Tourette's Syndrome [anyone notice it doesn't say Tourette's Disease]. Oliver Sachs tried a chemo-therapy of L-Dopamine [see Awakenings, that's Oliver Sachs that Robin Williams is playing, and L-Dopa type drugs were used there]...
...Anyway, Witty Ticky Ray is full of Witty Ticks!
And Ticky Wit!
And if you ever wanted to be entertained, or have someone hold court, Ray was the man, people loved his energy.
And he drummed in a band that kicked ass because of the kick-ass drummer, but some of his ticks were bad enough that he really needed the medication so he took the medication, and it stopped the Tics.
And it made Ray into a mess.
He was amazed not to have the ticks, or the vocaliztions! To be able to sit and not make be noticed! But he felt dead; his Wit was gone; he disliked drumming.
Amazing story. I think he chucked the Meds.
And yes, it's funny so don't think I'm all heavy about this. But some of these Syndrome's result in people having the ability to do and see and hear things that other humans are utterly unaware of.
