its kinda weird, but i was reading something unrelated the other day that mentioned this. it said that if antartica melted completely, it would take away 100 feet of land. they never mentioned how much the depth would change, but they said roughly 100 feet of the coastline would now be underwater, thats not really that bad

I want to know the ice is thicker then water logic doesnt aplly here. If ice is thicker, then melting glaciers would lower the level of the oceans. Now all I ever hear about is global warming and ocean levels raising etc. Maybe it has someting to do with the salt? I say lets melt these fuckers and have super huge beaches all around the globe!

actually no. if you cut off 100 feet of the jersey shore, the water would only need to be about 8-10 feet higher in most places. if the atlantic ocean was 100 feet deeper, all of rt 35 south of like brick wouldnt exist

not true johnee. its partly true, water expands to take up more space when it freezes. but what you dont look at is, no matter what expension it made, thats water thats not in the ocean now. so no matter, it would add water to the ocean, being that the oceans are lower than they would have been before part of them was frozen.
plus they are kinda discounting global warming. they are starting to think its gonna cool slightly over time if anything

Some triage before Mike the Teacher gets here and cleans this up:
Melt the icebergs already in the water=no change in the sealevel. The displacement is no different than the ice cubes melting in your scotch (or my scotch at least.)
Add the glaciers currently sitting on land mass to the ocean and all of a sudden Waterworld doesn't look quite so stupid. All right maybe it does still look stupid but you're still raising the level of the ocean (again like adding ice cubes to your glass of scotch).
And now I return to my Glenlivet.

Also johnee, your talkin about ice caps. 90% of glaciers are underwater cause yes, glaciers are pieces of ice that are floating, like an ice cube.

North Ice Cap = An enormous ice pack, floating on the ocean. There is no land underneath. Submarines have busted through the ice near the North Pole. The North Pole, being afloat, is unstable; hence no permanent Research Stations.
And Recyclerz is exactly correct. Ice, when it melts simply is putting the water above the ice back in the water; the end result is no change is overall level for floating ice.
South Ice Cap = An enormous Ice pack, not floating but on that continent, Antarctica. Since this is on land, it is stable enough to have a permanent station; The Scott-Amundsen Station; which you get to after flying to a place in New Zealand, called CHEECH.
This ice is one land, so if it melts [and it's melting] the sea level will rise with the additional water. Run-off.
How much water is in those caps???????
Les then 2% of the planet's water supply; so the Waterworld scenario is out. I forget the exact number, but it won't be as bad as Waterworld.
Snoogans is indeed correct on sea level rise vs land loss. A 6 foot tide swell indeed will flood a coastal town very nicely.
Think of filling a tub with a bottom with a slight slope. When you begin filling it you notice that water is heading to the back of the tub a LOT faster then the water is rising vertically [sea level].
My apologies for being vague; but hey, you guys are a lot smarter then you think.
You just don;t know the stuff.
And if you think that's a Dig, it aint. This is my specialty; Water Chemistry. I Had to learn it; I don't know shit about a lot of stuff you guys are experts on.
Now...
If someone throws a penny off the Empire State Building and it hits someone in the head; what results????
Oh yeah, and if you stand on the South Pole [and yes, there is a pole there; but they move it, because the ice, even thought it is on land, is moving], and you take a step; what direction are you going?

i think ice is so slippery cause from the second it comes out of the freezing temp, it instantly starts to melt, even slightly, and the coating of water on the ice makes it slick. am i even in the ball park, i doont know, im just guessing this from sense

I heard that if a penny is Dr0pped off the Empire State it actually wont kill you, because its too small. Apparently a study was done on this recently to prove it wrong.
Ice is slippery because when you step on it a film of water forms between you and the ice, so theres less friction and, therefore, slippery.
And if you stand on the south pole and take a step in any direction, aren't you always going to be going north?

Yea cuz both the pencil and the bowling ball are both shaped in a way that air resistance would be less of a factor.
And 4 pennies together would probably kill someone cuz theres an even amount of air resistance. Or at least less effect from it. Maybe if it were the right amount of pennies so the diameter of the penny is the same as the width created by all the pennies attached together. But that would take like 7 pennies

Yea thats true. But a plate would be much thicker. And the air resistance placed on it compared to the penny would be the same, but since the plate is shaped smoother than that of a penny (if its edges are smoothed out and rounded), air resistance should be much less of a factor.

Little trivia for ya... You know what you would find if the ice melted on Antarctica? Atlantis.
The first map you'll see here is called Kircher's Map. It's from 1665 and it was based from Egyptians maps that were passed down through the centuries. The second map is what Antarctica would look like today without the ice (which was developed through satellite imagery).

You have to look at it from a certain perspective. When you are at the south pole, and you take a step, you have taken a step south.
Think of it as a basketball. You are standing on the south pole... but you are not upside down. You are standing straight up. No matter which way you step, you are taking a step towards the other side of the ball. South.

There was a book about Antarctica being Atlantis, and they talked about a massive land shift like you say, but when you look at the sea floor, youll see that tectonically, its not possible. In the time we have been making maps and traveling around the world (approx 20,000 yrs) the contenents havent moved all that much. They arent floating on water, they are pressed together over the molten mantle, and while they are moving, its not possible for any continent to move they way Atlantis was suppose to move. More likely, Atlantis was a caldera off the coast of Greece that collasped during a volcanic event.
Another interesting thing about continents?
They all begin and end with the same letter!

Without air resistance, everything falls at 9.8 m/s^2. Edges on a plate do not effect the rate at which it falls, it is the surface area of the plate and the force of air pushing upwards on the larger surface area that slows it down.
Also, over the years I've heard so many numbers about how high the water level would be that there is no definite number you can point to. You'll just have to wait and see for yourself.

I still want to know where the water level would be.
And I want to be able to choose who lives and who dies.

johnee if you actually go read the thread, you'll see that mike already said and someone else did too, that the ice in the water displaces the water. like when you put an ice cube is soda, it makes it rise, so when the ice melts, it just goes back to the normal level. hence if the north pole melted, thats all that would happen. the south pole is over land, and so that melting would affect water levels, though we said only about 2% so it would have no significant effect accept right on the coast

There's your top for this Non-Comedy Pyramid.
Can't be said better then that.
I've had University students that couldn't sum up a discussion this well.
Not blowing smoke, it's just cool after grading Essay Tests from California high school seniors that write at a 4th grade level [long story], and seeing how rare it is for people these days, adults included, to write a good sentence, much less a paragraph.
And it's not because of my posts; I was trying to think up the best way to explain why, when ice melts, the level of water doesn;t change.
The science answer is this:
The Level remains unchanged because bouyant objects displace their mass, not volume, in water. So when they melt, the Mass is replaced, Not volume. So the volume remains unchanged.
And you know what? That's a pretty shitty answer, so I didn;t post it.
It's too full of $5 words.
Richard Feynman won the Nobel Prize in Physics, so he Walked the Walk. And he was trying to explain part of QED, Quantum Electrodynamics; the interaction between photons and electrons, one of the absolute Cornerstones of Physics, and it was a High School audience, and he was struggling, and he finally said:
'I apologize. I am having trouble explaining this to you, but it's not you, it's me. Because I have never had a physics problem that I couldn't explain to a high school audience, at least the basics.'
'If I can't explain this to you, it measn that I don;t know it well enough myself.'
Now here you have a guy who Revolutionized physics [do a google search on Richard Feynman and see a bazillion tribute sites; he's like God in Physics]; and he's constantly saying how stupid he is! He was always saying this!
He knew the difference between Knowing what something Is, and Knowing Something.

It would have no significant effect except on the coast only in terms of what would likely be under water and above water. However it would have a HUGE impact on global climate which is pretty much close to impossible to predict. To say, however, that ice caps melting (due to say, global warming) would only affect coastal areas is grossly misinformed.

if you read it, i said the water levels would only affect the coast. i never said anything about the world climate being affected. how bout you let someone have one when they are right for once, and stop adding shit that you claim i said so you could seem smarter

TextI still want to know where the water level would be.
It would be up to here.
Are you looking? Hey, look, dammit! I'm trying to show you....yeah, that's right, see where my hand is? This is where it would come to.
Here, I'll make it simple for you, here, I'm putting a mark on this wall here for future reference.
