Let's face it. These cakes tasted much better back in the day. The stuff they make now is lousy. Do you have any favorites from your childhood?
I always loved Drakes Yankee Doodles and Yodels, Hostess Fruitpies and those pink snowballs, and TastyKake Zingers and chocolate cupcakes. Anyone?

Chocodiles rocked! They were basically a chocolate coated twinkie, and I haven't seen 'em in years. It takes a while to eat a chocodile!

Hostess fruitpies were like manna from heaven, until the day when an 11 year old gvac purchased an apple fruitpie with his hard earned lawn mowing money and found a worm in it. Haven't had one since.

I gotta go with Funny Bones. Can't beat chocolate-covered chocolate "cake" filled with peanut butter goo -- all in the shape of a Twinkie. mmmmm...

But none of that crap tastes as good as it used to. What's up with that, Heckler?

I guess from an Darwinian standpoint, it's a good thing we grow out of the childhood phase where preservatives and cream-filled styrofoam tastes so good. Otherwise, we'd be spending all our grown-up paychecks on that crap and we'd all die before 25.

Hey gvac -- Hostess Worm Pie! That's revolting! Were you traumatized for life? EEEEWW!@#

Kate,

Traumatized for life? You
don't know the half of it!
The biggest killer is that if
this had happenned to me in
today's world, I would be
sitting pretty right about now.

How much you figure the
Hostess Corporation would be
willing to part with to keep
me happy (and quiet) for
finding a worm in my fruitpie?
And how long does the statute
of limitations run on things
like this? Just curious....

gvac -- I think your best bet would be to re-enact the event.

1) Obtain worm or piece of worm (bait shop? pet supply store?)

2) Purchase Hostess Apple Pie (I'm assuming it was apple -- what other fruit do you associate worms with?)

3) Par-boil worm to achieve proper "baked-in goodness" effect.

4) Take bite out of pie, or get someone else to do it if you still haven't gotten over your pie-phobia.

5) Insert boiled worm into pie filling.

6) PHOTOGRAPH! Post on ronfez.net. Send copy to Hostess Corporation with doctor's records citing indigestion, post-traumatic worm syndrome, and nausea.

Figure, you can't be the only one to have ever discovered a worm in your pie before. I bet Hostess has a whole department for handling worm- related suits.

hehe. worm suits.

Gvac, I think worms in our food is healthier than most chemical additives that are being used.
Kate, the reason things tasted better when we were kids:
As we age, our tastebuds tend to dull. I think they die, or something.
Also, the major baking companies use many more preservatives and cheaper ingredients. Also, look how small the cakes are these days.
I remember when Funny Bones were almost as big as bricks.
It's sad.

I've decided to confront my fears head on, and I am now going to walk around the corner to the deli and get a hostess fruit pie (apple, of course).
Be right back.

Major bummer, dudes. Seems my deli only carries Drake's, no Hostess. So I bought a Drake's apple fruitpie, instead. I just finished it and boy was it awful.

First off, what's with the 2 micro pies? 1 full size pie is just fine, thank you very much. And secondly, they seem to have been deep fried to the point of where all taste has been removed. If it wasn't for the 2 lbs. of sugar glaze on top, these things would be flavorless. And finally, no worms! The least that could have come out of eating such a lousy breakfast on a Sunday is a class action lawsuit. I just can't win.

I absolutely love the TastyKakes Butterscotch Krimpets (Krimpet muncher?). God, those are good.

As for Hostess, the only ones I really love are the cakes that are chocolate on the outside, white cream on the inside, and a little dab of jelly in the center. But I can never find them, except down in the South.

Now, see, this is an interesting topic for me... growing up in rural Wisconsin, we only had Hostess. It wasn't until I moved here that I was introduced to Drakes and TastyKakes, so it's all a new experience for me. From my childhood, I loved the Hostess fruit pies, and the orange cupcakes, not the chocolate ones. But I've discovered a whole new world of preservatives with Funny Bones and Zingers. I'm still discovering, but those two are currently at the top of my new finds list.

Oh my gosh! Those are my faves, and EVERYONE has cracked on me my whole life cause I dont like the chocolate ones. Kate, you officially rock!

Devil dogs are extra good. I love around this time of year when they come out with the orange colored creme. Yum!
Yodels are also tasty, along with those coffee cakes that come 2 in a pack.
Have you guys ever had the mini drakes snacks, those are so good when you're trashed.

My all time favorite though are the twinkies that they made when I was little that had strawberry jelly mixed in with the cream....Extra yummy!

I'd have to lean towards tasycakes. Butterscotch Krimpets (jelly is horrible!) and peanut butter Tastycakes are always worthwhile. I'd also have to give it up for chocodiles, hoho's and twinkies...no moonpies though...moonpies suck!

We don't have TastyKakes or Drake's where I come from, but Hostess was the shit back in the day. My very most favorite ever were Hostess Pudding Cakes. They were yellow cupcakes with fudgey chocolate frosting, and CHOCOLATE PUDDING on the inside. They didn't make those for very long either, but man were the good.

As for Little Debbie cakes, I don't go near the things. They all taste like waxed sponge. I remember when I was little, if you were poor your mom would have to buy the .99 box of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls instead of the Hostess Ho-Ho's, which cost about 3 times as much. The Ho-Ho's had delicious, peelable, melty chocolate coating, and a moist cake that could be unrolled and eaten piece by delicious piece. Swiss Cake Rolls, though, came in plastic wrappers instead of foil, were crumbly as all get out, and no matter how long you kept one in your hand, the "chocolate" stayed solid. Ew.
