I don't give a shit if people hate the song or the band. Have fun and hate away. But those three cirticisms...like I said...WOW. They're simply flat out wrong. For one, I can count on less than two hands the number of "power pop" hits that have significantly made the charts in the last 15 years, much less 10, so there goes Moe's notion...it's NOT "emo", and probably couldn't be further from it, so you're done...and they sound nothing, NOTHING like PUSA in any way, shape or form, so that's just insane.

As a sad, sad music geek, it's my duty to act the bitch and call out people when they're horribly, horribly wrong. If you're going to criticize, criticize RIGHT.

I didnt say that the songs were the same, I meant that they are in that same ridiculous pop/punk vain as PUSA. If you think that song isn't running musically parallel to Lump then you really do love your MTV.

It's power pop all the way, which is as about as cultish as you can get as a musical genre. Think classic Cheap Trick. Though Recyclerz is right, this one has a very concious new wave-vibe to it, though that's not what they usually go for.

There's nothing "punk" or "emo" about it in the slightest.

Shelf life? This is their third album. They made great music before all the attention, and they'll keep making it afterwards. Ho-hum.

And I must "love my MTV" because I started listening to them a good six years ago when "Radiation Vibe" off the first album was a minor indie hit? OK, gotcha. Thumbs up there, Sparkles.

Like I said, if people wanna hate the band, they can hate away...and they should. Power pop is best when it's ignored by the masses. ELITEST UBER ALLES.

I fail to see how because you have 3 of their albums or have listened to them for any amount of years makes anybody's opinion less valid.
Somebody out there probably listened to Seven Mary Three, or Nickleback or any number of groups that played colleges for years before they had their first radio hit, that doesnt automatically make these groups icons.
You know what, I have several Screaming Trees albums, and I'm still waiting for them to comeback, but its not gonna happen. Number of albums doesn't mean dick in the whole scheme of things.

No, and no.

The only similarity I see is that both songs have drums, bass, guitars and white guys. One is all bouncy, new wave-y power pop and the other is wacky post-grunge with a MUCH harder guitar crunch. The only thing I'll give 'em both is that they're "cute" songs. I DON'T love my MTV because I can tell the difference.

Adam from FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE also supplies the music & vocals for "THE WONDERS" from the movie THAT THING YOU DO. Good songs!!

I nver really understood why people bash Pop music for being so wimpy. It SUPPOSED to be light & catchy. It's not like it's failing at being "heavy" or "deep". It's not even trying!

This is like saying "Juicy Fruit gum isn't a nutritious meal!" Of course it isn't!

"Stacy's Mom" (or for that matter "Jessies Girl" or "My Sharona") is succeding at what it is trying to accomplish. Short, catchy, hooky....period.

Mojo got me hooked on the Fountains of Wayne and he told me it was power pop. I was weary of it, but i loved it. Every song they do on Welcome Interstate Managers have a specific style to it.

Thier one of the most original bands out there, and are the farthest thing from emo there could be.

Emo is crap, its just a guy whining about how shitty his life is and how he hates life cause his girlfriend left him and now hes gonna show her he was the right choice and blah blah blah. Theres a difference between Emo and Power Pop, Emo isnt catchy, or nearly as good as Power Pop music.

Plus, Stacy's Mom is a real generic song, but its also had hit written over it when they recorded it, personally I like Mexican Wine the best.

wow I'm glad I started this thread - quite the controversy. Here's my 2c worth - in this day and age where the only thing that seems to sell is this lip sync'd non instrument playing "Dancers", something that is a quick flash back to the mid 80's sound with guys who ACTUALLY PLAY INSTRUMENTS is refreshing. It brings back memories of High School / College, right before grunge took off. If you like it, great. If you dont, it's your perogative. Some of us are tired of the MTV pop crap, tired of classic rock (I do listen to q104 from time to time, and it gets a bit repettitive), and am looking for a little diversion. That's what this song and it's genre is. They've been around a while and arent going anywhere. If the "trend whores" hold true to form though, the 80's stuff will be back shortly, so get used to it.

ok, back to the discussion....

Number of albums doesn't mean dick in the whole scheme of things.screaming trees was a great band. it seems that you like them, too. the only way in which i could see you bringing them up is to say that they suck because they didnt get famous, despite the number of albums they put out. but, that couldnt be it.. could it?

none of this is making any sense to me. fountains of wayne have a lot of good songs. it's a shame that this was the single. but maybe now that people know who they are, some of the better stuff will get out there.

Dude I think you're a little too fired up about protecting the virtues of a band that's gonna have the shelf-life of Mr Big ... if they're lucky.i think mojo's point in all of this was that, unlike mr. big, fountains of wayne is a good band. further, the fact that they've had a few fairly well received albums out thus far would sort of refute the whole "no shelf life" argument.

"Denise" made it to the airwaves for a few months when the second album came out..i think "sink to the bottom" got some radio play, as well.

none of this is making any sense to me. fountains of wayne have a lot of good songs. it's a shame that this was the single. but maybe now that people know who they are, some of the better stuff will get out there.
Adam is quoted as saying the record company picked the single, not the band.

I may go to Rider but I'll always be Marist Mike. Maria Sharapova is the future mother of my children.

So you're saying the intro sucks too...?

Which was taken from a Cars song...
