I swear this is real:
The Word of the Day for September 23 is:
ninny - NIH-nee noun
: fool, simpleton
Example sentence:
When she realized the big, glowing sign pointing to it was right in front of her, Maria felt like a complete ninny for asking where the snack bar was.
Did you know?
The word "ninny" first appeared in English toward the end of the 16th century. Etymologists are not entirely sure how this word came about, but they suspect that it could have been borne from a shortening of "an innocent," with the "n" from "an" getting transferred to the noun. (In spoken English, it can be difficult to tell where one word ends and another begins. We got "a nickname" from "an ekename" and "an apron" from "a napron" through similar shifts.) "Innocent" here would likely refer to a na‹ve, artless, or unsophisticated person (as opposed to one free of guilt).
