The Outsiders

This is the first novel of the year, so my focus will be on basic analysis and understanding of some common literary devices. We will study characterization, conflict and resolution, theme, foreshadowing, symbolism and the use of allusion.

Students will also be writing their first critical essay analyzing a chosen aspect of the book. We will begin with formulating a thesis and finding support, then producing an outline of the essay. I will give specific feedback on each rough draft, then students will revise for a grade (see Projects). This is a very complex and difficult assignment, so much support will be offered in class.
