I was reading this article (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030925/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_71)on yahoo and I came across a disturbing line...

In Baghdad, communist leader Hamid Majid Moussa said he and other members of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, want to move toward national sovereignty "as fast as we can."

The U.S. actually appointed a known communist as part of the Iraqi Governing Council? These guys were hand-picked by the administration. Who in this administration had the final say on this guy? Why is he there? Why hasn't Ann Coulter spontaneously combusted?

Info on our new bestest buddies, the Iraqi Communist Party (http://www.iraqcp.org/framse1/icphis1.htm)

Anyone else have a problem with our government appointing communists to positions of power?

Italy's government has had many communists and ex-communists since the end of World War II. Such is the way of coalition governance.

Good to see that our model of democracy for the Middle East has a great foundation.

Can we give Communism a rest already? It's dead, and any nation that would be foolhardy enough to revive it will deserve their own inevitable failure. It is no longer a threat to us; it is a flawed, failed system. Even China is easing away from it. (Though they are still brutal as ever)

If Iraq chooses a communist government, good for them. Let them do what they want. It'll make them appreciate their freedom even more after it's downfall.

There are communes (kibbutzes) in israel, and we love israel. i think its more the "spread communism by any means possible" that we weren't cool with during the cold war then the economic system in general.

After a good 50 years (more or less) of Cold War, I think we're used to dealing with the commies.

It's these fucking Muslims we're having problems with.

I'm a big-time anti-Communist, but US policy has been like this for the entire extent of the 20th Century. We sided with Communists to defeat facism. Then we sided with rightists to defeat Communists. I don't see the significance of one (1) Communist out of a Council of 25. My problem with it is that the most reliable and positive Sunni in Iraq, Sharif Ali binHussein, is not on the Council while some random fucking commie is. According to a Baghdad poll, 66% of Iraqis want a Constitutional Monarchy. On the other hand, I can't imagine this Communist asshole representing more than 5% of Iraqis.

I'm joining NYD's club. Great points.

I'd hold off on NYD's support estimate this commie has in Iraq.
I say that not because I have accurate up to date poll results or anything.
I base it on what I've been saying about Arabs in general all year:
1) They love a loser;
2) You can count on them to take decisions that are not in their best interest.

After all, look at the way these "bitter enders", as Rumsey calls them, are able to melt back into the population after attacking the forces that came to liberate them.

You mean to tell me Nasser was a loser?
