Why does such a thing exist? What great big, important foregn relations business do these people have to attend to that committing crimes is slowing them down? Is there a good reason?
The only conclusion I can come to is that they need to get where they're going in a hurry. Believe me, Ung(clicking sound)owaabhinda(two clicking sounds), you can slow down. There's no foreign emergency that the Ambassador from Kenya has to get to in such a hurry that he needs more than a Starsky and Hutch light. Laws need not be broken.

Trust me, we take plenty advantage of it ourselves. The fact I'm not dead in Bangkok jail right now is proof enough of that. Tit for tat. Diplomatic immunity saves US asses, period. Thank GAWD for dip immunity...

You know, the way you talk about Thailand, I really must go there and soon. I think I'm missing out on far too much debauchery.

Well, Diplomatic Immunity surely gets abused, but it exists for very very good reasons.
When Politicians visit other countries, they often carry classified info, state secrets, secret military data, troop info, and a whole range of business secrets, policies, stock info, etc. lotsa stuff that's very secret, but must be carried with them for whatever reason, into a foreign country.
Reverse It: When we visit another country; should we not have the right to say 'this here is Private Information which you may not view.' I would hope they'd agree.
I'm not sure if you are talking Politicians or Business people. If it's business, it can be even worse. Industrial Espionage is a Huge problem for companies, including many of ours. Secrets get stolen, and some secrets are worth billions. Imagine knowing what the other Manufactureres were going to Bid on a Closed-Bid Contract for, say, two dozen Boeing 777s? That kind of deal makes or breaks entire state Economies.
Information Theft is the Biggie in the future, I'd say. Hell, right now.
BUT: The fucks that break the law in NY city, or anywhere, who then walk away claiming some diplomatic thing has gotta go. You got state secrets, thats one thing. You break the law, you're coming with Us. IMHO.

Everything I know about diplomatic immunity comes from Lethal Weapon 2. It's in place so you don't get shot for committing crimes. However, if there's a renegade cop, diplomatic immunity doesn't work.

renegade cop...wow, I feel like Lenny and Sqiggy walking in the door right now......anyway, the only people who have "diplomatic immunity" are some foreign government employees, not just all foreigners. In fact very few foreign government employees have this status. They have special id's, etc that allow them to park in certain specific areas, and our government and it's representatives, ie the police, are asked to be lenient in dealing with minor infractions of law, which understandably a visitor from another country might not be familiar with. Diplomatic immunity is not an absolute. That guy in Lethal Weapon would definitely be tried here for his crimes. As to why it exists, it is a courtesy we give to representatives of other lands who wish to deal with the U.S. As someone mentioned above, it is mutual. Mostly, the immunity deals with searches and seizure laws, as mentioned above, meaning that the reasoning for searching a diplomat or his property must be held to a higher standard than even The U.S. Constitution. Searches may still occur, but only after balancing the need to search with the possiblity of inducing an international outcry. Have I gone on too long again?

Dip immunity isn't simply something we alone offer. Most of our allies around the world (Especially Asia and Europe) have similar arangements set up for the benefit of foreign dips, including American ones, so we're not getting the short end of the stick here. I had what was similar to what Chris described...a card that informed local authorities as to my political status and what I was exempt from and who should be contacted. I also carried around my diplomatic passport at times as it often functioned in the same regard. And I HIGHLY reccomend becoming a globetrotting federal employee just for the dip passports, You get to skip the long check-in lines and such. No more 3+ hour wait!

Diplomatic Immunity is also in place, I beleive, because laws vary from country to country. A diplomat from one country might normally do things that would get him arrested in other countries.
