In French Deck, Bush Is King of Diamonds

PARIS - The ace of spades? Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld gets the honor in a new French deck of cards. President Bush (news - web sites) is the king of diamonds and Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) the joker. The game takes a jab at the famous deck of cards created for U.S. soldiers hunting down ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and other leaders from the deposed regime.

"I found it completely indecent to present a manhunt as a game," said Thierry Meyssan, the man behind the French deck. "We thought this card game would allow us to ... explain why we consider the government of George Bush a threat to international security."

Meyssan is the author of a one-time French best seller, "9-11: The Big Lie," claiming that no plane ever crashed into the Pentagon (news - web sites) on Sept. 11, and that the attacks were plotted by a faction within the U.S. military.

Now, Meyssan said in a telephone interview, he wants to expose "the 52 most dangerous American officials."

Meyssan heads the Voltaire Network, a left-wing association that put the cards on its Internet site.

A little over 2,500 decks a la francaise have been sold, at $9.20 each, on the Internet in recent weeks, Meyssan said. There are plans to sell the decks in stores soon and translate them into 10 languages, he said.

Each card carries a photo of the official and a text explaining the choice. Bush, as the king of diamonds, is described as "the president of a baseball club."

In 1979, Bush's first business, Arbusto Energy, obtained financing from James Bath, a Houstonian and close family friend. One of many investors, Bath gave Bush $50,000 for a 5 percent stake in Arbusto. At the time, Bath was the sole U.S. business representative for Salem bin Laden, head of the wealthy Saudi Arabian family and a brother (one of 17) to Osama bin Laden. It has long been suspected, but never proven, that the Arbusto money came directly from Salem bin Laden. In a statement issued shortly after the September 11 attacks, the White House vehemently denied the connection, insisting that Bath invested his own money, not Salem bin Laden's, in Arbusto.


In conflicting statements, Bush at first denied ever knowing Bath, then acknowledged his stake in Arbusto and that he was aware Bath represented Saudi interests. In fact, Bath has extensive ties, both to the bin Laden family and major players in the scandal-ridden Bank of Commerce and Credit International (BCCI) who have gone on to fund Osama bin Laden. BCCI defrauded depositors of $10 billion in the '80s in what has been called the "largest bank fraud in world financial history" by former Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. During the '80s, BCCI also acted as a main conduit for laundering money intended for clandestine CIA activities, ranging from financial support to the Afghan mujahedin to paying intermediaries in the Iran-Contra affair.


When Salem bin Laden died in 1988, powerful Saudi Arabian banker and BCCI principal Khalid bin Mahfouz inherited his interests in Houston. Bath ran a business for bin Mahfouz in Houston and joined a partnership with bin Mahfouz and Gaith Pharaon, BCCI's frontman in Houston's Main Bank.


The Arbusto deal wasn't the last time Bush looked to highly questionable sources to invest in his oil dealings. After several incarnations, Arbusto emerged in 1986 as Harken Energy Corporation. When Harken ran into trouble a year later, Saudi Sheik Abdullah Taha Bakhsh purchased a 17.6 percent stake in the company. Bakhsh was a business partner with Pharaon in Saudi Arabia; his banker there just happened to be bin Mahfouz.


Though Bush told the Wall Street Journal he had "no idea" BCCI was involved in Harken's financial dealings, the network of connections between Bush and BCCI is so extensive that the Journal concluded their investigation of the matter in 1991 by stating: "The number of BCCI-connected people who had dealings with Harken-all since George W. Bush came on board-raises the question of whether they mask an effort to cozy up to a presidential son." Or even the president: Bath finally came under investigation by the FBI in 1992 for his Saudi business relationships, accused of funneling Saudi money through Houston in order to influence the foreign policies of the Reagan and first Bush administrations.


Worst of all, bin Mahfouz allegedly has been financing the bin Laden terrorist network-making Bush a U.S. citizen who has done business with those who finance and support terrorists. According to USA Today, bin Mahfouz and other Saudis attempted to transfer $3 million to various bin Laden front operations in Saudi Arabia in 1999. Yes because WWI was US versus Germany and Austria and WWII was DEFINITELY the US versus the evil Nazis/Japanese/Italians. (and now someone will say something like "no thanx to the French!!!!!11") I think we kinda had help from the the Russians and the British (as much as i hate to admit that the limeys did anything good). I sure know Hitler didn't get stuck in Columbus, i think it might've been Moscow.

But I of course do get the point that the US did its part. And FDR was also the last president I think I would say was one i liked. Since WWII I don't think the US has really saved anyone's asses (without some degree of gain for the US).

In fact I love Australia and it loves us too. If we were to believe the media on these issues, one would be led to think that Americans hate the U.S. It's simply not true. And the French DO mostly hate us because of our "attitudes", or because we act "too American"...which is in fact an unfortunate form of insult across the world, one I've come across MANY times in my travels. Recent world events may have brought it to the forefront, but this is really nothing new. For decades now travelling Americans have gone so far as to just claim to be Canadian to avoid all the typical bullshit that goes along being branded American, whether it means an assumption that you're a ganagster, an obnoxious tourist, an arrogant imperialist, or just that you have money coming out of your ears. Even in Spoon's beloved Australia. Yes, often there are countries such as Australia where you're LESS likely to encounter it, but trust me, pick a country at random on the globe and I guarentee it you'll be treated a certain way there JUST BECAUSE you are an American, period. But don't make the silly assumption that westernized countries like Australia "love" us as a whole, or that "all" French people "hate" us. How are either of those NOT ridicuously arrogant?

And while this IS generally a dick move, just think to all the images, impressions and stereotypes WE have of various foreign visitors and tourists...people generally treat other people from other countries shittily, period. The French just take it to a new level because so many people there (Mostly around Paris and the "trendy" south...the people in the northern and central regions, as well as a lot of Paris itself are nothing but mostly hospitable and welcoming, or they just leave you alone) come to a decision on someone right off the bat just because they're not French. Doesn't matter where they're from...they're not French, so they suck. But it's really not THAT far off from how a lot of people in most other nations, ourselves included, generally feel about foreign visitors.

In the end it's a blast to poke fun, but it's a stupid thing to assume it's a universal reality (Or on the flipside, to assume that a country like Australia "loves" us with some kind of creepy herd mentality. I think the existence of Outback Steakhouses alone knocked us down a few pegs). I lived in Paris for two years and have visited numerous times since and have plenty of dear French friends who I'll probably be in touch with for the rest of my life. Sure, there were plenty of AWFUL people who wouldn't even look at me much less speak to me once they realized I wasn't French, but hey, fuck them. I'll stick with the good. It just seems a little laughable to decry a nation's supposed universal hatred for us and then counter it with our own, like that makes it OK. And as for media perception...well, you claim our anti-war protestors are presenting a false "bad image"...but that's all you're seeing the media present of OTHER countries, like France, like Britain, like Germany, etc., etc.. How do these things, assumptions, misconceptions and perceptions NOT run both ways?
