ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. -- A state trooper had terrible news for a couple - their 2-year-old
granddaughter had been killed in a traffic accident.
It took a few tortuous hours before Tom and Diane Cardina found out it was all a
mistake.
A hospital staffer told a Florida Highway Patrol dispatcher that little Chloe was "stable."
The dispatcher thought she heard "fatal" and passed it along to the trooper at the
accident scene. The dispatcher has quit.
It turned out that Chloe and her mother, Nicole, escaped serious injury in the crash that
sent them to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa on Sept. 19. Their last names were not
available.
A friend had told the Cardinas about the collision. They drove out to see the wreck, got
the bad news and collapsed on the side of the road.
They picked up Chloe's 5-year-old sister at the bus stop in a daze but couldn't share the
news. They left her with friends, who also were devastated by the report of the young
girl's death. Tom Cardina called his sons in Orlando and Texas to say: "You've got to
come home. Chloe's dead."
The Cardinas hit the road again only to get stuck in rush-hour traffic without a cellular
phone for the 25-mile trip to the hospital.
"It was terrible," said Tom Cardina. "You can only imagine."
He dropped off his wife, parked illegally in a frantic search for a space and found his wife
on her knees at the emergency room door, surrounded by their daughter's friends.
"Chloe's all right. She's alive. We've seen her," Tom heard someone say.
For a moment, he thought his daughter was dead. But a hospital official led them to
Chloe's room, where she was playing on the bed.
Chloe had a knot on her head and seven stitches on her face. Nicole suffered only
bruises.
State trooper Kenneth Boatright had told the Cardinas about the girl's death. He found
out she was alive 90 minutes later but after the Cardinas were gone.
"I felt horrible," said Boatright, who lost his best friend in a car wreck. "I just wanted to
go home after that."
In another mix-up, the FHP issued a release after the accident saying the other driver
had died. He suffered only minor injuries.

I bought some a couple of weeks ago, for the first time since December 2002. I smoked a 1/4 cigar wrap - using that fancy cigar wrap for the first time, when did this come out? - and felt like it was too much. I even chucked the remainder of my nickel out the window, feeling as if I would not want to do this again anytime soon. So, tonight I bought another nickel. I tried a blueberry wrap this time - quite smooth. I smoked about 1/8 and this proved to be quite enough, but not overboard. I had cut off about 1/3 of the wrap before I started, so I had saved the leftover amount untouched. I had a slight headache, but all-in-all was very mellow, enjoyed cranking the radio as I drove with the windows open, and had relatively little paranoia attacks. Is this normal?

Yesterday evening, I bought another nickel. The portion I had left over from before was dried out, so I tried chocolate wrap this time - pretty good. I cut about 1/3 off and saved the rest in its original wrapper, folded over, and happened to have a small airtight containder for the rest.

Mild sensations, light headache. Wore off after a few hours entirely. Tried another 1/3 this evening. Enjoyed, but after thinking it over, I recognized that I guess I am not into it anymore, at least right now. So I chucked the remainder out the window, and am back to square one, scotch.
