LONDON, England -- Global warming will never bring a "doomsday scenario" a team of scientists says -- because oil and gas are running out much faster than thought.

The world's oil reserves are up to 80 percent less than predicted, a team from Sweden's University of Uppsala says. Production levels will peak in about 10 years' time, they say.

I don't believe it. There is oil and natural gas in this country that we haven't even begun to extract, and I think it's that way elsewhere in the world.
I think this is a hoax.

That would be quite a sight, watching someone dump shovels of coal into their their furnace to power up their computer.

Well I for one am not worried. We keep saying we want to be done with fossil fules, now we'll HAVE to find new energy.

Necessity is the mother of invention my friends. Once we CAN'T have oil, we'll NEED to develop all these wind, hydro-electric, solar and hydrogen futures I keep hearing about. But they never seem to get off the ground for one reason or another. And I'm not blind to the fact that the 'Good 'ol Boys" oil network wants to keep their own oil flowin'.

I say let it go. I don't think humans can damage the planet NEARLY as much as these bought and paid for scientists and government councils say we can, but the fuel is dirty and NO ONE want to live on a dirty planet.

Bring on the FUTURE!

besides, there's a certain group of people who have us by the short and curlies, who will have fun trying to eat sand when the oil runs out.... or when we stop using it.

I worked for a while with a environmental group bringing renewable energy to the state. We already have the technology, and the cost is comparable. the Problem is that fossil Fuel companies are so entrenched in our government (and way of life) that every other option is shuffled aside. Everyone thinks its a good idea, but no one wants to do anything about it.

I was little kid during the first "Energy Crisis" in the 70's and they were saying we were running out of oil then.

with all the talk of renewable energy there is a proposal to put Windmills off the coast of Cape Cod. These windmills are predicted to meet all the energy needs of the Cape. Yet every big left wing politician in the state who has a place on the cape is against it. Not in my backyard

Can't we just hook up PanterA and Gaia's boyfriend's asses to some kind of collecting tube to solve all this?

Over a typical 20-year life span of a solar cell, a single produced watt should cost as little as $0.20, compared with the current $4.

The new solar cells would even be able to compete with electricity generated by burning fossil fuels such as oil and gas, which costs about $0.40 per watt,

if it ends up being 1/2 the cost of oil, "the man" will suppress this and it'll never see the light of day :)

Cost efficient, easily extractable oil and natural gas are running out. And it just so happens that Iraq has the potential to be the world's number one leader in oil, and an untapped reserve of a whole shit load of natural gas.

Not trying to start shit, just stating the facts.

Well the facts are that no one really knows. People are equating 'we're running out' with present estimates and measurements.

And for 25 years the ground imaging and research and techonology have improved, and we have found huge reserves, and better ways to extract; so, for a while, it's still the cheapest BTU in town.

Which is sad, because in my opinion, we can't run out fast enough. DM Moe is dead on, the Need isn't there for the excellent alternatives, so the Research is slow, and hence change. Quicker we run out, quicker we can implement existing and to-be-discovered energy sources.

Actually, all of this will be solved when we can control a sustained Fusion Reaction such that we can draw enough energy to run the world 100X over using mostly... water.

Oh Jesus. If you figure that our, keep it under your hat! You'll have the Oil people, the Hydrogen people, even the Solar people trying to kill you ass!

We will never run out it, would just eventually reach a point, even with advanced technology, were it is no longer cost effective to extract, refine, etc...

We will never run out

ok, do you understand that there's a finite amount of oil? so we will run out eventually.

Is there a way to drain the oil like when you drain the tub after a bath?

That'd be great.

That's OK.

Clinton and Gore said they were "environmentalists", too.

And well know how well THAT went.

I guess the diffrence is that Bush is actually putting money on the table.

Good point.

And this is a good article to bring up for all the people who think things like pulling out of the Kyoto(?) treaty and alienating the world is what Bush is all about, since this is very much a global project.

The United States will be responsible for about 10 percent of the cost of the project, expected to begin construction in 2006. The other partners are China, Japan, the European Union, Russia and Canada.

So kudos.

But as I basically said, my faith in environment-concernced governments is not very strong. I believe it when I see it.
