View Full Version : Why do bruises hurt more than cuts?

I have a small bruise on my wrist, and at work the other day I smacked it off of my desk as I turned my chair around. Good LORD, the agony. But why is this typically the case? If I have a bandaged cut and I hit it against something, it WILL hurt, but nowhere near the throbbing, hardcore PAIN that I feel if I hit a bruised part of my body against something.

So outside of the fact I sound like the clumsiest fuck who ever walked the Earth, why is this the case? Or am I imagining the whole thing?

well bruises are like you bleeding on the inside, so it's almost as if you are banging a cut on the inside of your body against something. Or maybe blood builds up in the bruise and then when you bang it against something.....it hurts more.......man i'm just a post-whore. Wow that rhymed......and this reply ends.....NOW

Bruises usually cover more area than cuts. Thus they hut more. Also, usually bruises can be deeper than most superficial cuts so more nerves will be affected. Ever get a really deep cut? They hurt!

And you are a clumsy fuck, you clumsy fuck!

"I'm not a doctor but I play one on message boards" :-)

My guess would be that the subcutaneous (below the skin) bleeding covers a larger area than a cut, and the blood that's seeping into the tissues is exerting a pressure over this wide area, making it tender to the touch, and throb from your bloodpressure.

Just a guess.

I don't know, princess. Why don't you ask your gynocologist?

bruises hurt more than cuts for a few reasons.
1) it is a cut inside the skin, making the bruise a clot of blood that shouldnt be there. so it pushes against other things and such.
2) Prob the biggest reason, when skin is cut, so are the nerves. when the nerves are cut, it hurts like hell, but then they die and stop hurting. now the same thing happens to whatever is "cut" inside during a bruise, but the blood gathers around dead nerves and living nerves from other internal parts.

There are way too many factors here, I'd say. Size of wound, how induced, location, your personal pain threshold for different types of pain...

Example: paper cuts hurt like fuck while a razor cut may be painless, paper cut = more cellular tearing and ripping, while the razor cut may have cleanly cut nerves.

Also cuts by definition, start at the skin, and the surface of your skin is LOADED with every kind of nerve sensors; temperature sensors, motion, pressure, texture... whole lotta nerves there.

As for bruises? Ive had some I never even knew were there until I saw them. Others brought me to tears.

I'd say it's personal, all other things equal...

Of all the people on this board, I never thought Mojo would be this big of a nancy boy.

As an aside, TooCute's probably right - I would figure the bruise covers more area / signals more tissue damage.

when we were kids there was a common saying that went "they'll beat you with a rubber hose", "they'll" meaning the police. The story was that the rubber hose would cause damage but not leave any bruises or marks so you couldn't prove you were abused and beaten.

Maybe Chris The Cop could add something on this matter....
