if it wasn't for frats, i would have probably drank half the amount of free beer that i did in college. thank god for rush parties!!!

and most frat guys aren't all that bad. some of their activities are wierd, but who cares? i can't fugure out why hippies go to those crappy festivals- it's not for me.

i guess my point is that it's always good to have frat guys and hippies around if you want to party.

Some of my best friends were in frats, and nothing changed after they joined, and I knew most of their "brothers" and hung out with them...got to go to the parties and drink their booze...why would I pay to live in those shitty, disgusting houses?

those people pay to be friends with others...that's admirable

not all frats are bad i am sure....but there's something to be said when you are talking to a girl at a frat party and all of a sudden you are getting taken outside to the tune of 12 frat brothers...come to find out that one of the guys had hooked up with her the night before...that's grounds for punishment

Luckily I was rolling deep and it turned into nothing....my friends and I threw bigger parties than any of 'em anyway. We also got more noise violations than most.

i truly could care less. I was merely pointing out the ludicris amounts of secrecy that is involved.

I know more than you would believe. I knew that I didn't want to take shit from losers that were actually my peers but had joined a couple months prior to me. I knew i didn't want to drink piss, stay awake for 48 hours, answer a 100 question quiz which had questions like 'Which way do you wipe your ass?'

And I realized i didn't even want to hang out there when they would make people pay 5 bucks to get shoved in thier basements and then get banned from thier parties b/c we were taking a number of people back to our place for a real party where status made no difference.

maybe my school was different so I shouldn't generalize but please don't lead people to believe that these 'frats' can do no wrong

For the fringe benefit of having a lot of sex with shallow girls who get off on being with a guy in a stupid baseball jacket with greek lettering on it.

Other than that, for the free beer that Monsterone talked about.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

It's college. Girls leave home and go crazy from the freedom. And that translates to casual sex

You don't need a Frat for Beer or Sex. There was plenty of it for everyone when I was in college and there is even more for current college students

So the question remains: Why join a frat?

Much of what Ron said last night was dead on; I've seen it, I've Been There, I've Done That. And then went back and taught High School and saw it there, just remembering it a bit better then as a student.

It can be hell on earth being a student. And not all, but a few frats prey on young kids who show up at a place where none of the freshman really knows any other, so theyre looking for someone to hang with, and the Frats do a few Mixers, and you're off.

Some are great. Some treated the pledges like dogs. Kidnapping, Alcohol Poisoning, Hell Week/Night. Yeah, I was there.

And people really shouldn't generalize about something they don't know much about. They are different on every campus and they are all run differently. We can't assume all frats are like the ones we hear about in the media, that's how stereotypes get started. Talk about the frat that's doing wrong, not the ones board members are in.

get over yourself. It's the holier than thou attitude that turned me off...I never wanted to look down on others for no reason. I was never rejected from a FRAT b/c I never wanted to become one of those people. I've been to a couple of 'date parties' and had a great time but I always found it interesting to have to answer the following question 20 times a night: 'So, are you a kappa sigma?' 'Who do you belong to?' 'I haven't seen you, are you a pledge?' No, I am just a lowly student.

I don't get why the "pro-frat" people here are so defensive. This really started out asking, "what's the point of joining a frat," and everyone got all pissy.

And what's not to "get"? Like I said, some of my closest friends in all of the schools I went to were frat members. My brother is in one right now. I went to hundreds of frat parties and hung out with frat brothers all the time at their houses, apartments and at clubs and bars. People are talking like these guys act one way around the "public", and then 100% differently when only amongst their own kind. I have nothing against frats, I just don't get paying people to hang out with them when I did it for free.

And again, the houses...come on. The frat members were usually the filthiest people on campus. How could anyone stand living there?

again here you are making generalizations and stereotypes, the very things Aggie just tried to warn everyone against. What about me? I, as I'm sure you have picked up by now, am a member of a fraternity. I look down upon nobody, nor have I ever looked down on anybody for not being a member of a fraternity. It's your own choice to make, good for you if you dont want to be a fraternity member, but dont make generalizations about members just cause you might have met a few who were dicks. But I think a lot of you, that weren't in them are using that ridiculously bland " paying for your friends " line when it means nothing.
You join a softball team you pay a fee no ?
You join a bowling league you pay a fee no ?
The money you pay is part of your rent ( if you live in the house ), part of your meal plan ( 3 squares a day and it wasn't shitty cafeteria food ), money for parties ( pay for beer, food, etc .. ), intramural sports fees and for social events that were just for fraternity people and their dates ( bus trips, football games, etc .. ).

I think a lot of times it depends on the kind of college you went to. I went to a school ( Louisiana State ) that had 24,000+ students and I was from out of state ( NY ) and really didn't know anybody. I went through rush as a goof because I wasn't planning on pledging and I went to a few houses where the people were cool. Sure some of the larger fraternities ( with 130+ members ) may be asses and its very clique-like but I joined one that had like 30 guys and it was a blast. I didn't join to pay for my friends I joined because it was cool and we were doing fun shit. I lived in the house every semester except my first and I enjoyed having a backyard on a lake much more than I did living on the 12th floor of a prison-like dorm. Plus I paid about 400 bucks less in rent.
The friendships you make are kinda different. I don't see many of the dudes I joined with that often ( years in between ) but when I see them I can pick up right where I left off.

Its also not rich elitist dudes either. About 20% of the guys in my fraternity were in the reserves and were using that money to go to school. One poor bastard got pulled out of classes to go to Kuwait, came back to school and a few years later was pulled out a week before finals to go to Haiti.

President Reagan came to our house ( he was in the same fraternity ) the year before I went to school ( 1990 ). It was the GDI handjobs that were lined up outside the house trying to get autographs that were pretty silly looking.

As far as the secrets go, they're no big deal. I don't/haven't told them to people because they just don't need to know. Why would I tell ? Just because you wanna know something doesn't mean that I have to tell it.

Mojo said it right, those of us that were in them shouldn't get defensive about it. Its not a big deal. But some with anti-fraternity attitudes seem very bitter. Its almost as if they wanted to join but just didn't get in. I know they are saying they didn't want to " be with people " like that, but they sure seem to be pissing fire over something.

It was my opinion that somebody, or some people, were very sensitive.
The pro-fraternity people were accused of taking the thread too personal and I just countered with the opposite opinion.

As with anything, to each his own.
I had a great time in a fraternity and didnt feel like I was paying for my friends.

I can have a negative opinion of somebody/something at any time. I dont need to explain myself. And if I have a negative opinion of something than it has far less to do with me being in a fraternity than it does with my own gut instincts.

Okay kind of off the "heated discussion topic" and I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but seriously, why is so offensive when people call it a "frat" as opposed to a "fraternity"?

Also, the 3 board members I know who are also fraternity members are three of the THE most chill, friendly, inclusive people ever. :)

Yeah a lot of schools are like that.
I know that in northern Louisiana, which is more conservative than southern La, there can not be more than 4 unrealted women sharing a house. Not sure if the brothel part is an old wives tale or not but it might have something to do with it.

But even New Rochelle NY had some wierd laws. I know that the fraternity I was in had a chapter at Iona College and they could not have a house for the same reason. Something about 4 people without a relation not being able to reside together.

I joined a frat cause i thought that the concept was cool you could go to antother school and if you had a chapter there you had someplace to go you could hang out and party with them and they treated you like you were a member of there chapter. I will admit there were time that i didn't like my frat but any large group/club/team everyone doesn't alway get along. but what ti got out of it are some great friends and memories you don't stay in contact with everyone but the ones you do are life long friends (this past sunday i was a groomsmen in one of my brother's weddingand he has been out of school for 3 years and i have had alumni status in the frat for almost 2 years (that is what happens when it takes u 6.5 years to graduate) and out of school for a semester) and the ones u don't keep in contact with when u see them all the memoties and good times just come back. I will admit that it was fun for a year or so and then i grew up it wasn't the best thing i did but i would have regreted not pledging more latter than anything that had happened. We all is said and done i had a good time with it
