Watching the baseball game yesterday made me think of how come baseball managers are the only managers in sports that wear their team uniforms as opposed to suits or other appropriate clothes/slacks/ dressed t.
You don't see football, hockey, soccer, and basketball coaches wearing uniforms. Why can't baseball mangers were something like what the other coaches wear?
Was it always like this? Cuz in little league you don't see coaches dressed like that.

Good question.
Maybe because some of the early managers were former players and player/managers (John McGraw and Rogers Hornsby come to mind).
I think the last manager who wore a suit was Connie Mack.

Billy Martian would have looked silly kicking dirt at the ump in a 3 piece suit.

In my hazy memory i see a comedian [or several] who have used this premise as a comedy bit, or at least a couple of jokes.
I'd say Carlin but I'm just thinking of the Baseball Vs. Football Bit. Which is classic if you've never heard it.

Yes, it was Carlin who tied this in. He made a point about imagining Bill Parcells in a NY Giants uniform.

my perception is that in baseball the manager enters the field of play. In other sports like football , hockey and baseball if the head coach enters the playing area the team is pealized for having an extra man on the field/court/ice
