A hungry 100-kilogram wild bear wandered into a hospital in northern Japan, terrifying a patient, and then escaped through a glass emergency exit in panic, only to return later.

"A male patient at the hospital was in the lobby's smoking section for his morning cigarette," said Keiichi Suzuki, an official in the government of Ichinoseki City, 370 kilometres north of Tokyo.

"He saw the bear and screamed for help and yelled, 'Bear! bear!' "

The adult Asiatic black bear ambled in through the main entrance of the city's Iwai Hospital at dawn on Wednesday.

It walked through the automatic sliding door of the building and came into the lobby of the hospital.

People go into the hospital...bear goes into the hospital...Sometimes that bear looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a bear is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes.

When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

The floor in the ER turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those bears come in and... they rip you to pieces.
