Everyday, it seems, R&F make it clear that they want the 11-3 slot on WJFK. O'Reilly doesn't work; R&F play well with the other shows on the station; they have more than earned it by their willingness to be flexible; and there are more than enough signs that they are building their following.
They deserve the promotion.
One hold up may have been cleared for them last week. For awhile it seemed as if "Bill and Thrill" out of the Infinity Baltimore station might be their main competition for the time slot (they were also on between Stern and D&M up there, and were a good fit), but now that "Bill" was fired from the show and Infinity last week, it seems that the logical decision for JFK is to go ahead and do this now.
Since the Junks are now doing better after one year on HFS and don't look to ever look back, just open the evenings up to The Hideout or the The Pheonoms (doesn't make any difference to me, as long as they don't syndicate in Lick-ass like they do in Baltimore), and then get to work on programming the weekend.
(And for old times sake, why not rerun the afternoon's R&F at 11pm?!)
This would be a wonderful one year (live) anniversity present for them.

Who the fuck are The Phenoms?
This station is SO dead to me on the weekends until The Music Show comes on Sunday nights.

I know it's ort of a bitch slot they have the boyz stuck in at 11, but honestly its a good fix to tide me over until 7. But I'm sure it sucks on their end.

I heard about 20 minutes of the Phenoms show late Sat night when I was coming back to town, and it is basically a Sports Junkies rip-off, but without that annoying EB after taste.
I have no idea if either they or The Hideout would work 5 nights a week, but at least the station is working on a "farm system" where they can pull someone up and promote R&F to a better time slot.
I say all of this, however, knowing that I won't be able to listen to Ron and Fez as much as I do now; but it is a step up for them - you have to think that the only reason that agreed to a one hour 11am show is so they can get their foot in the door.

Since we're speculating.. why not a Ron and Fez show on the new liberal radio network. I realize Fez leans to the right and Ron is not a "textbook" liberal, but they do the best policitcal commentary on radio.

Here's another thing I've been thinking about. If I recall correctly, a year or two ago, Stern was talking about retiring after 3 years. I haven't heard his show recently, so I don't know whether he has recanted these statements. If this remains true, then he should be retiring in the next year or two. When this happens, will JFK move it's #1 rated show into the #1 time slot (that would be D&M to mornings), or try to find a new morning show? Either way, the morning or afternoon drive time slots could become available for R&F.

Stern isn't retiring. He says that after every contract. He actually needs the money. He admitted on the air recently that before his divorce, he could have retired after this contract. His TV and film careers aren't exactly gang-busters. One more fat, 3 year contract should fill his pockets enough to leave.
I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Regardless of which shift they are best in, middays is a promotion. As I understand it, based on number of potential listeners, the ranking of time slots is as follows:
1. Mornings
2. afternoon drive
3. middays
4. evenings
5. overnights

Maybe for all you virginia hicks who dont have jobs it's good. but 11-12 is more of a lunch spot, and anything between 1-4 is nearly impossible to hear for people who have afternoon jobs.

yes, I saw it, and I understand that if they boys want new listeners that's a good spot, but I think for current listeners it's not that good.

Nobody ever stated anything to the contrary. A lot more people listen to the radio at work than at night, so that's why it's considered a promotion. How the current fans would feel about a move is old news -- we went through this all when they took over D&M's midday slot at WNEW, remember?
And, really, there was no reason to call the DC listeners rednecks.

El efe is the worst, Oh I got to be so secret, nobody can know who I am, well guess what el crapy nobody cares! (krusty Klown voice) I enjoy R&F at middays, better show, it's just them , and doesnt tend to revolve around a few radiophiles who have no talent and get a hard on to be on the air. the boys are the best, it's why I listen. it's not for some loser listener who feels their life needs to be part of the show. I'm not naming names, because I'm bad with names, but they know who they are

I would really miss them if they left the evening, but they want mid-days - 7-11 ratings do not equal the same kind of money for the station as 11-3 do; and it would be a better shot at syndication (in my opinion) than the evenings.
(Man...who wouldn't love to have that kind of shift if you worked in radio? Sleep late and stay up late - and have the afternoon to do with how you want! If you're Ron and you have a family, you actually get to see them - oh, wait...maybe that is the negative here).
Jefe and J Dubs will replace them in the evenings so they can go midday, I think it's just a question of when. Not only do Dubs and Jefe openly worship Stern, but they have great relationhips with Ron and Fez and their fans, and evedently have a good off air relationship with Don and Mike - something I think Cameron is really looking for.
Maybe the question now really is HOW to get out of the deal with O'Reilly.

I think we have to Wait for Bills contract to be up with WJFK. I think they figure we got to pay him anyhow. ANYONE know how long he has been on WJFK i think it's almost been a year

Well, if they do shift, I'm definitely gonna have to depend on downloads of the show just to listen. But whatever is good for the boys is fine with me. As long as I get a chance to listen to them I have no problems with the move.

when the boys actually get their own staff, i'll get worried about not hearing the boys at 11.

you see, the kids, they listen to the rap music, which gives them the brain damage. with the hippin' and the hoppin' and the bippin' and the boppin'.

When they first rolled O'Reilly out, he was actually paying stations to run his show. I think they had stopped that by the time they got to JFK, but I do think it's a contract that is breakable.
They could always dump him on another Infinity run station like they did G. Gordon Liddy, who also must have had a contract when they squeezed him out - I may be wrong about this one, but I think Liddy got all right ratings before he was banished.
As far as their "own" staff...well, they were allowed to bring in Wonderboy...

There's pleanty of reasons to call the DC listeners rednecks.
And personally, i would hate for the boys to do middays. I would only be able to catch the last hour, and there show is best if you listen from beginning to end.
But, if its best for them, so be it.

Springfield, Va.: Hi Paul,
I was wondering if you have gotten any ratings for Ron and Fez? I have heard that they are in the top 3-4 in their target demo's 25-54 men. I am still standing by my prediction that they will be in the top three by the end of the year. Hopefully WJFK will give them the midday slot so they will not have to do double shifts anymore.
Thanks
Paul Farhi: R&F have been slowly gaining audience in the 7-10 pm ratings. But I gotta tell you: their 11 am-noon show has got to be the funniest thing on radio at the moment. Brilliant wit, great chemistry, huge topicality. You gotta love those guys! Let's hope WJFK never figures out that its weirdly programming daytime schedule is a mess and R&F get to keep that slot...
I submitted this to Paul Fahri's online chat yesterday.
As stated before there is more money to be made in middays than in evenings. There are more listeners during the day than at night. Most people listen in their car or at work. I just want the ratings to climb and hopefully in the future we can get the boys syndicated in Baltimore, Philly and back home in NYC.
The one thing that I don't like about the comparison to the junkies is that the junkies had such great ratings. Yes I know they were #1 before they left WJFK, but it took them a long time before they got those ratings. I like the junks they are good guys, but they were on weekends for a long time and then it took them a good stretch for them to catch on at night.
I think Ron and Fez have a bigger audience with a wider variety of people listening to them. All you have to do is listen to the callers or go to the events. It is not just a bunch of white guys, there are plenty of women, and people of all ethnic backgrounds. The real test in DC is to beat the urban stations which has a lock on the airwaves in DC. I am very confident that the boys can do it.
