View Full Version : Determining your political ideology

hey, ive been wonder about this for awhile, and havent been able to come up with a definate answer as to what party i would most likely fit into. So maybe the political warhawks on RnF.net can help me out, then try and recruit me to thier cause.
Alright, here's my basic beliefs which prolly will determine this stuff.
* Monopolies are fine by me, so long as the government can make sure prices are fair.
* Abortion is a matter of choice
* Censorship should be taken to the smallest degree possible
* Marijuana should be legalized, taxed and sold much like Tobbaco.
* Less money should be spent on social programs to give the needy money, but more on getting them jobs. (no more welfare)
* Affirmative Action is ok, but should eventually die off.
* Medicare should be socialized ( i think this is what canada does, im not sure)
well that about it, i could provide more if i had more issues i could think of to weigh in on. I think im somewhere between Green and Libertarian, but you kids would know best.

it's hard to define yourself as a true "democrat" or a true "republican", there's too much gray areas surrounding too many issues, just stand up for what you believe in and if youre voting chose the candidate that comes closest to your personal politics, and register yourself as an independent.

Don't limit yourself politically by trying to stick only to one "side". It's like joining some stupid "boys only" club as a kid. And all those led to were many lonely nights of crying, masturbating and crying...so stay FREE, youngster!
Pay attention to the issues and decide where you yourself stand. Ignore ALL pundits, especially those on ANY cable news channel or radio station. Think for yourself and you'll be fine.

register yourself as an independent.
What is the purpose of this? Personally I am not registered with any party. What would I gain if I registered as an independent?

There may be more pragmatic reasons than your beliefs in selecting a political party. I live in NYC and the Democratic party has such a stranglehold that General Elections usually are meaningless the contest is decided in the Primary Election. So, if you want your vote to mean anything you register as a Democrat, because Republicans, Independents etc are not permitted to vote in the Democratic Primary.

as i understand it...regestering as an independant diqualifies you from voting in the primary. to do this you must regester either republican or demorcrat.
here's how i break it down....libertarian before republican, republucan before democrat, and heres why(painted with a very broad brush).
democrat to me is a veiled form of socialism. it goes againsed the laws of nature in that people who choose to have 9000 kids and no job are incouraged (and funded) to continue to do so. if you cant feed your kids...dont have any. if you wont work...you shouldnt eat. it is affecting natural selection, and slowing down the progress of all mankind. if you make the effort, and proove to an individual that you are worthy of their help, that that individual will choose to help you. collecting MY money to distribute however the government sees fit rubs me the wrong way.
republicans are closer to what i could agree with.. inthat they incourage people to be self reliant, hardworking, honest ect. but the problems i have with them are these...they lean too much towards big business instead of the common working man. the other big problem i have is that they identify too much with the christian style of life. trying to pass abortion laws, pushing godly things that have no business in the buisiness of government.
libertarians arent perfect either. they believe that everyone should be free to do as they please, provided that you dont hurt others (directly). they are for the legalization of just about every vice there is... which is cool by me. and they believe that business should be left to regulate itself for the most part. taxes would be for the purpose of defending the nation from foreign agression, and thats about it. the idea here is that with more of your money in your own pocket...you can send your kids to the schools of your choosing, or help those in need as you see fit. they're great on paper and in theory, but in real life most of them are machine gun toting, methamphetamine manufacturing psycho's.
nobody is perfect...but i cant believe that so many people still blindly line up with either republicans or democrats. its like choosing between getting punched in the face or kicked in the ass. they both suck.
theres my two cents.

well that's an extremely general statement that a republican would use as an insult and I see as a compliment that isn't deserved. Socialism taxes your money, no matter how little you have, and then gives the necessities (what the regime feels they are) to everyone.
And there's so much room on the left of the Democrats that to present them as the "leftest" (most left) party is absurd. I just registered as a Democrat because I'm willing to settle for the lesser evil and therefore would rather have a Democrat than a Republican in office in general (if I had a choice between only Bush or Lieberman I might vote for the {GASP} incumbent). If I were more politically loyal to a certain party then I might have registered for that party, but that's not the thing for me. I can certainly understand it though.
Yeah and it sounds like your a libertarian Reed.

So you rip him for making "an extremely general statement", by making an extremely general statement of your own?
And this makes sense how?

"an extremely general statement"
sorry I didn't mean "general", I meant "stupid". And my statement wasn't all that general. I likes the socialism, and Republicans use the "socialism" tag as an insult. I only get grief if i explain myself most of the time so i just refrain from doing it.

I don't know, I think If you're Libertarian, you're definitely not a Republican. Moderate Republicans and Libertarians are completely different in my mind. Both can be good, but they just seem inherently different.
