CONTROVERSY SWIRLS AROUND CBS REAGAN FILM; SCRIPT REVEALED
Mon Oct 20 2003 20:30:29 ET

In the upcoming CBS telefilm on President Ronald Reagan producer fail to mention the economic recovery or the creation of wealth during his administration, nor does it show him delivering the nation from the malaise of the Jimmy Carter years.

The film depicts Nancy Reagan as a pill-popping control addict, who set the president's schedule based on her astrologer's advice and who had significant influence over White House personnel and policy decisions.

MORE

The NEW YORK TIMES has obtained a final script for THE REAGANS, according to newsroom sources.

TIMES reporter Jim Rutenberg does it again, and is planning a Tuesday splash.

"This was very important for me, to document everything and give a very fair point of view," says Leslie Moonves, the CBS chairman and a top Democrat supporter [he sat next to Hillary Clinton during her husband's re-nominating convention].

MORE

The film is set to air during next month's Sweeps. It stresses Reagan's moments of forgetfulness, his supposed opinions on AIDS and gays, his laissez-faire handling of his staff members. The scenes often carry a disapproving tone.

During a scene in which his wife pleads with him to help people battling AIDS, Reagan says resolutely, "They that live in sin shall die in sin" and refuses to discuss the issue further.

The film's producers, Zadan and Meron, acknowledge their liberal politics, as do the stars of the television movie, James Brolin and Judy Davis. But Meron tells the TIMES: "This is not a vendetta, this is not revenge. It is about telling a good story in our honest sort of way. We all believe it's a story that should be told."

No. It's kicking a man while he's down. There is obviously a vendetta here.

In the upcoming CBS telefilm on President Ronald Reagan producer fail to mention the economic recovery or the creation of wealth during his administration,

wouldn't they also have to mention the staggering debt that led to a massive stock market crash, the failure of supply-side economics, inner city degradation, etc.

As for the berlin wall, when did it fall again? I believe that Reagan was riding horses in California.

Maybe this moive is focusing on personal life, not political.

Both accomplished a lot in their tenure in office.

Both political sides are RABIDLY trying to diminish the legacy of both men, often through blatant lies and propaganda.

While Reagan certainly played a part in the fall of Communism, so did the previous 35 years of US policy towards the USSR. In any case, the Wall and Communism fell after he was out of office.

What's the rise of star wars? We still don't have a functioning star wars system today, never mind when Reagan was in office, and it's a highly contrversial issue; I don't see how it was an accomplishment of his administration.

And do you mean the hostages in Iran? They were released at the same time Reagan was being sworn in - thanks to the hard work of Carter.

Drudge is often a sketchy source, so perhaps the movie should be judged after it's been aired. However, the Reagans did consult astrologers, and I wouldn't doubt Reagan would have that opinion of AIDS, as many other people did at the time.

I just read the article about this movie in the NY Times. It doesn't sound as bad as Drudge is making it out to be, but it still doesn't sound completely fair. And it ended with this quote from the author of Dutch, Reagan's official biography.

"The provenance of the movie makes me suspect it will not be fair," he said. But he added that it could also work as a reality check on Mr. Reagan's record.

"The best thing one can say about a movie of this kind," he said, "is it does redress or counteract the sentimentalities that are being perpetrated all of the time in his name by his fanatical followers."

Reagan, Reagan, lessee, Reagan.

Hmmmm, isn't his administration the record holder for most members convicted of breaking the law?
Uhhhh yep!

And wasn't he the guy that promised to balance the budget in 2 years?
That's our Ronnie!

And while we're on economics, didn't he promise that his tax cuts would so stimulate the economy that increased and expanded production would more than offset the temporary decline in revenues? Yeah, baby! And did it happen?
Nope.
Has it ever happened?
Nope.
Didn't Reagan's budget director go before Congress and describe what a fraud this economic theory was?
Yup.
Also on the economic front, didn't Reaganomics plunge us into 2 recessions?
Yup, again.
And didn't executive incomes rise from being 25 times that of the lowest paid worker in the company to 250 times that of the lowest paid workers?
Sure did.

So when the rich got their tax cuts, did they invest it in the economy like Reagan predicted?
Evidently they kept the money, just like you or I would. Sure, some of it was invested, but not nearly what Reagan predicted.

The Reagan "economic recovery" came as a result of massive borrowing that future generations would have to pay back. Paying off Reagans debts was where most of Clinton's tax increases went to pay for.

So, let's move on to international affairs.

...Leave out the fall of communism...fall of the Berlin Wall...rise of star wars...hostages being released

Communism fell due to it's own internal contradictions as well as a spontaneous revolt begun in the Gdansk shipyards by a little electrician named Lech Walesa, who led the Solidarity Movement. This uprising spread across Europe, and though Reagan did call for Gorby to tear down the wall, his appeal fell on deaf ears. The Soviets did not tear it down.
Star Wars never "rose". It was just talked about a lot, but was then, as now, technologically impossible. It has mainly been a return on an investment made by aerospace companies that invested millions in Republican campaigns and got billions back.
Star Wars had nothing to do with Lech Walesa or his followers.
As far as the hostages being released, you didn't say which hostages.
The ones held captive by the Iranians were released minutes after Reagan was sworn in. Perhaps one of his fans on the board can describe the frantic diplomacy carried out by Reagan in those few minutes.
If you mean the other hostages, the ones held in Lebanon, well that was a sorry spectacle, wasn't it?
There was ol' "Dutch" Reagan on t.v. promising us that he'd never deal with or pay ransom with terrorists, when in reality he was quite a good customer for them, sending their Iranian government commanders arms that proved decisive in the Faw Peninsula fighting in the Iran/Iraq war. By cutting off Saddam from oil exports to finance the war, Saddam resorted to using poison gas, thoughtfully provided to him by yep! You guessed it! Ronald Reagan.

And these are things TEENWEEK wishes were covered in the movie?

I know Reagan was a better president than Carter and I'm not quite Righty Righterson. Reagan's mis-steps are just accentuated more because he was such a good president and the Democrats wanted to attack him. A Republican can discredit Clinto just as well and make him seem like a horrible president, but honestly they were both better than most every Cold War president. Reagan actually concentrated on THIS country to a degree, rather than a looming enemy that was dying off already. One doesn't need massive improvements to happen in order for one to be a good president. Reagan actually improved the country. If you're a fan of the United States I would think that you'd like Reagan.

tv movie is going to concentrate more on personal characteristics it seems. This will only work to dropkick righteys off their high horses about Clinton.

I'm sure this had NOTHING to do with it...

And what happened to James Brolin? He had a pretty good career going. Came across as a heterosexual male. Then he becomes Mr. Streisand; I'm convinced she's using a strap-on on him...

Was he riding those horses with Ruben Carter? Sorry, I've heard that song a lot lately.

If this movie showed Reagan's shortcomings along with his achievements, I would have no problem with it. The conservative elements of the media would, but I wouldn't.

EDIT: Mojo, is Ford really to blame for the shortcomings of his presidency?

Ford's term was basically a time out so we could collect ourselves and let our blood pressure get back somewhere close to normal after 2 years of Nixonmadness.
His stumbling from airplanes, lapel button answers to inflation, spectators nailed by his wicked slices on the golf course and the bungled assassination attempts by the likes of Squeeky Fromme served to lighten the mood after years of darkness.
"Hail To the Chief" was played with a rimshot.
Then there were the reports of his son, Jack smoking pot on the balcony of the White House and Betty drinking Vitalis...
