Just wondering. Thanks if you do. I'm sure you are the people keeping the music coming to my hard drive everyday.

Are you the same people who pay for porn?

God bless you anyway. All the spam I get sent because of you is a small price to pay.

Yeah, I'm a total fish hook for this schmuck on this one.

Who still buys CD's?

Me.

Quite frankly, I listen to too much music. I simply canNOT find everything I want on file sharers, and the amount I'm looking for has me wading through far too many false files, porn and viruses. It's simply not worth it. FTP sites are a pain in the ass, and the current file sharers tend to do more damage to my computer than is worht it spending the time it takes to track down some rare import or b-side or live track that nobody ends up having.

For a casual music fan? It makes sense to download most of what you listen to. Me, I'm essentially a vinyl junkie...except for CD's. I love music too much to not buy it and try and track down those hard to find CD's. I enjoy collecting and listening to CD's...I find it fun trying to track down hard to find songs and albums. It's basically my only hobby, and I love it too much to give it up for a flawed technology.

I would still buy CD's if the bands I listened to were still putting out albums. Since they aren't, I don't. I don't really download music either.

I'm tired of buying the CD and not liking anything but one song. I believe it's a conspiracy by the record company to soak the fans for as much money as possible. This is why I love people who steal music on the internet.

I do. Sure, d/l music is all well and fine, but if you really like the band you also buy it.

I still buy CD's. Sure, once in a while I'll have a friend burn me a CD but I cant stand not having the actual CD.

The only time I download music is to check out a band, then Ill go get there CD. Downloading is hard though, especially on Kazaa because a lot of bands I'm looking for dont come up with any results.

CD's the way for me.

I almost never d/l music.

The sound quality sucks.
Also, I'm one of those guys that reads the liner notes. Who produced it...who played on it...where it was recorded. As a musician, that stuff is important to me.

15 bucks was never really that much money to me anyway. Even if I buy a disc and totally hate it.... I don't really care. I have discovered sooo many great album tracks over the years that wasting a few bucks on a bum disc doesn't really bother me.

I don't think I've bought a CD since '99.

I won't download legally unless something really scares me.

Who still buys CD's?

those who'd actually like their favorite bands to make more money. Maybe you download songs by Creed and Staind because they are "popular" and are making millions upon millions because Lil' Suzie thinks she'll be cooler if she listens to them. But unbelievably there are actually bands who might need to make money off of what they intend to sell. I think that if a band makes a cd, they'd like me to pay for it. And if I like them, i'd like to do that for them. But that's crazy me.

I am still an avid fan of CD's. I just picked up "Rush In Rio" (along with the DVD and the new director's cut DVD of "Pink Floyd Pompeii")
I usually get at least 1 a month. I only download rarities (B-sides, live boots, demos, etc.)
The sound on the CD's is far superior, and I like the artwork and liner notes.
Lately, I've picked up the new ones from Sting, Iron Maiden, and Primus.

By the way, "Rush In Rio" is VERY loud! I had to turn the volume almost down to nothing! I almost got a headache! :eg:

Well, while I buy CD's by the trunk-load, I don't flog that whole "buying CD's support the artists" schtick. Most big time band make their HUGE money off of tour and merchandise sales. Only a select few get the massive signing amounts when being picked up by a mjor label.

like TooCute I would buy CDs if the bands I liked were putting them out. I'll probably pick up the new Beatles Album next month. I keep going to best buy to pick up the Kill Bill soundtrack but they don't have it.

I'm way into movies and don't listen to much music anymore, I always have a radio on my but the Radio Stations in the DC area SUCK for music. I just listen to WJFK (seems like all day long. HS, R&F, break, D&M, R&F again!)

There was an article on slashdot a while back about this when the last Rush cd came out. It seems they are mastering them louder, at the expense of the sound quality.

This is true, unfortunately. Last years "Vapor Trails" while being loud, was also mixed poorly. There are digital "pops & crackles" all over the place. It's not as bad with speakers, but I'm a headphone guy, and you can really hear it. I had to use the Cool Edit Pro program to clean it up a bit.
This has also been a problem with the Foo Fighters "One On One", some of the Queensryche remasters and others.
As far as "Rush In Rio" goes, while there are no problems, the mix is not that great. Everything seems to be panned to the center, with not as much separation as I'd like, but that's just a personal opinion.
On the flip side, the best sounding CD of the year so far is Steely Dan's "Everything Must Go". It could be one of the best sounding CDs EVER!

Music stores are becoming ghost towns. Last few times I've been in Tower, Borders & Best Buy the music departments have been dead.
Personally, I blame the labels for focusing on music for kids only and turning their backs to adults 25 and over.
Sadly, MTV and VH1 have changed their formats and focus very little on videos and music.

But why would you buy CD's from bands you didn't like in the first place? That would just be weird.

i still buy cd's. not too many recently, but that's just because i haven't really had the time to go very often. i own many, many cd's. i definitely think that it's important to support the bands you like and it's also just nice to have the actual cd and all that comes with it. also, i have dial-up, so it takes me way too long to download one song. no thanks.

A few weeks ago on Ron and Fez's show they talked about this with the new Rory Hamptons and how Ron thought that the future of music would be online and that the record stores would be a thing of the past at some point in the near future. There's an article (see below) about how EMI is moving to put their entire music catalog online.

EMI moving entire catalong online (article) (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/apbiz_story.asp?category=1310&slug=EMI%20Music%20Online)

I think there will always be a market for CDs, though I don't think we will be getting them in the ways we may have done traditionally in the past.

Like anything that the internet has bastardized, you just need to know where to draw the line. I am a musician who's had to take both perspectives on this issue and I believe that both sides have merit. On the side of taking music off the internet, I think it's fine if you're 1.) trying out new artists you're unsure about, or 2.) digging out a single by an artist you liked from the radio, but would never expect a good album from. I think the problem arises when people go downloading entire albums and burning them to shitty generic CDs you can buy at Staples. First of all, shared mp3's have imperfections and dinks all over them. Second of all, those CDs are made of the cheapest shit-plastic in the world. Breathing on them the wrong way can make them get scuffed up. The problem is that people are burning entire albums of many independent minor label artists as well, because they figure, "hey I got the Dixie Chicks record for free, why not......" and this lazy, cheap attitude fucks over small artists more than anything and forces small labels to drive prices up at the mom-and-pop CD stores. I can't overemphasize that people simply need to know where to draw the line. File "sharing" becomes file stealing when it becomes a panache to making trips to the record store on the way home from work. Nothing makes me happier than to hear about some fat-assed douchebag getting his computer confiscated and slapped with a fine because he was "sharing" 10,000 mp3's he didn't pay a cent for. Then again, if you've decided to depend on Kazaa and Morpheus for your music needs, then your music tastes are limited to shit you can hear on the radio and MTV anyway. Thankfully, there are enough loyal music fans around to keep the better mom-and-pop places cooking (at least around Jersey). The rest of you hicks can enjoy your local Target and its overpredictable selections. That being said, buy my fucking band's next EP when it comes out; I'm sure we'll really gouge you (for like 7 bucks). That kind of price doesn't keep you from buying cigarettes or drinks in NYC, so why should it stop you from being a genuine music fan that supports the artists.

Target is a joke, but places like Circuit City and especially Best Buy are pretty decent these days in terms of selection and price. I just bought the two new Paul Westerberg albums, the fifth in the "Return of The DJ" series and the new one by The Shins at Best Buy this week, and these are albums that got minimal press coverage at best, for $6.99. The indie stores are great for used or older, hard to find albums, but they blow HARD when it comes to pricing new albums...same with Tower, Sam Goody, et al.

Downloading just plain sucks my bawls. The sound quality ALWAYS blows and, for some reason, the files are very often NOT what they claim to be. Wrong version, wrong song, wrong artist, different mix, different edit, "pre-mix" version (see: AUDIOSLAVE), blah blah blah.

Why does everyone think 15 bucks is soooo much money?? People spend 80 bucks on month on Coffee, but ask 'em to spend a few bucks on a CD and they act like it's a major spending decision.
