Ive had this head cold for about a week and Ive been taking Claritin that they have in the pharmacy now, and I really dont know if its helping. My nose is still runny and I wake up with a real sore throat. When Im up and out and about Im fine though, it just seems to worsen as I lie down. I was taking Benedril for a day before I started taking the Claritin. Anyone have a better remedy?

Oh, and Im adult enough to take any advice I receive with a grain of salt and just want the impression of the masses on the use of Claritin's effectiveness.

I tried taking Claritin for a while because I have really bad alergies. It didn't help.

I take Zyrtec now, which is much better. I don't think I'd recommend it for just a cold though. Nyquil or Tylenol Flu for just a cold.

Sorry to say, there is no remedy for a "head cold."

Claritin has antihistamine properties, but it's more for allergy relief.

Ask your pharmacist the best OTC med is best for relieving the symptons of a headcold. You might also want to check with your doctor to make sure you don't have a sinus infection.

I take Claritin so much, I should buy stock in the company. It's more for allergies than colds, but you have to notice that they sell 4 different kinds. The only one that really works for me is the 24 hour Claritin-D. It's the strongest one they sell.

And for a daytime med, a doctor turned me on to Robotussin CF. It totally loosens up your sinuses and that sore throat from the post nasal drip without making you tired.

Alka Seltzer Cold rules. I love that stuff. Clears me right up.

Never tried Claritin because I wasn't too sure about the possible side effects of headaches, nausea, constipation, diarreha, dizziness, headache, bloating, farting, burping, hang nail, ass pimples, hair loss, itchy trigger finger, etc, etc...

The History of Claratin is the history of perhaps the single most sucessful drug ever, the politics of the FDA and pharmaceutical companies, with prime precedence for generics and patent protection for originating companies, ie. those who invent the stuff. And throw in some prime examples of shady science. And mountains of money. WAY too long to go inot hear but to answer your Q quickly.

Its a low-dosage anti-histamine. Simple. The 'D' throws in some decongestant, but what you basically have is an anti-histamine.

Well, what's so bad about Histamines!!!???

Biology Experiment:

Take a key, or something sharp, but not TOO sharp, and find a nice white part of your skin, and draw a line with the object.

In a bit, you see some things happen. you will see the line begin to get red, and the line will eventually rise a bit. Congrats! You just triggered a Histamine Response!

Histamines are good in small doses doing what they do. When you scratched yourself, a cascade of chemical reactions and signalling occur such that blood is diverted to the area of damage. Blood = carrying the stuff to fight the bad guys and all that, so more blood in the area = let's get the 'heal-o-cules' on site. The Histamine response also causes the tissue to swell, blood vessels to either constrict or dialte, ditto for bronchia. The scratch? Substitute your eyes, your bronchial tubage, and a bunch of others, all leading, at worst, at Anaphylactic Shock. So Too many Histamine = No Good!

The bad news is most anti-histamines make you sleepy. So claritin comes along! Anti-allergy stuff that doesn;t make you drowsy! They made a mountain of money. Actually a mountain range.

Hey! Why do a lot of people say it doesnt do shit? Because they kept the dosage Just low enough such that the response of the primary anti-histamine [the ones that knock you on your ass] doesnt happen. Claratins active is a secondary, meaning it supposedly has less sedative effects. When it comes down to it? It's low dosage. It's anti-allergy M+Ms.

The pressure to make it an OTC drug, and a generic, and available for purchase from other countries and other things are the subject of heated debate, billions of dollars, and more then I could even write here.

I'd love to see MIKE TEACHER scratching a classroom full of brat's arms with a key.

Hey MIKE! It's more fun with 20 grit sandpaper!

Ennyway, I go with the Sudafed Cold and Allergy.

So Would I! Luckily, I have an Awesome Histamine respone; often called dermagraphia or hyperdermagraphia. I took a Tuning Fork, which has as an edge a simple right angle, like the corner of a metal ruler. 1st pic shows my forearm right before I draw.
Next photo is Immediately after I have drawn a line and then the letters 'M' and 'T' on my forearm. Medium pressure was applied, not close enough to scratch the skin.
Next photo = 1 min later = shows the blood pooling at the site, and you can begin to see the Histamine response.
Next Photo = 5 mins after; the Histamine response is clearly seen in the raising of skin, and at bottom a close up, taken at an angle to show that indeed, the skin is not even scratched, the skin not broken, but the lines are there.

At worst this can kill. Histamines are what are triggered in asthma, panic, allergic, bee stings and other attacks, some leading to Shock, Anaphylactic Shock, and at worse, people have literally suffocated.

It is now about 45 mins since I did that experiment, which I'm guessing I have dome about 200 times. And I can still see '--MT'.

Do NOT Try this at home. Sounds stupid, but I dont wanna hear M the T was the cause of someone looking like they were attempting the slice and dice themselves.

Yes, but these M&Ms keep me from sneezing my brains out when I spend time with my gf and her cats. They also aren't as chocolatey as M&Ms.
