I started a new job 3 weeks ago. I'm at the same company but in a different division. My co-workers had a really nice good-bye party for me, so it was apparent to all I was starting a new job. In a different department. In a different division.

The first week I was gone I kept fielding calls about my old job. I don't have the files. I no longer have access to their database. My pat answer is, "You'll have to ask the Production Assistant."

It's coming on the end of the 3rd week. The production assistant (who is also my friend) keeps calling me not only about my old projects ("Did we get an approved budget for X?") but about projects that were supposed to be mine ("The manuscript for X came up. You worked on the last edition. Who was the typesetter?"). She left two messages last night. I came in this morning and there were two more.

I've got my own projects now and I have my hands full trying to figure out all the new paperwork, etc.

At what point do I say, "I no longer work for you?" It kills me. They wouldn't be bugging me if I had left the company outright.

Keep putting them off. "Geez, not sure and I'm a lil too busy to look that." "Can't help you right now, I'm on my way out the door to a meeting." If they think you're unreliable, you'll be less of an alternative to them.

I know how you feel. I was in the same situation last year when I switched jobs in my company. The guy who replaced me (whom I said wasn't good for the job) sucked so people kept calling me all the time to answer questions. My standard reply was "That's not my job anymore".

On the bright side, you have to look at it as a sign that you were invaluable after all in that old job!

If this is a major nuisance to the point where it's definitely interfering with your work, then you should spell it out for them.

On the other hand, think of it this way - we all chat with friends inside or outside the company during working hours. So if someone is bullshitting with you for 10 minutes, do you get upset with them?

The question is how time consuming are these contacts with your old department? Is it the time spent that bothers you, or is it just annoying that they don't think twice about imposing on you?

Don't say it, Fuzz! Don't ever say it! Don't you ever ever say it! Unless you accidently blow your boss' car up with low grade dynamite. Then, you say it, Fuzz! You say it!

Both, but especially the latter. The information is all there at their fingertips. It pisses me off that they're too lazy to get off their butts to look it up on their own.

If I left the company, would they leave me messages on my home phone?

My last boss fired me and then kept calling me to ask questions, and I couldn't blow her off because I was trying to use her as a reference.

Three weeks is long enough. I've been in that position before and I always offered my services to the new employee. I helped out a little, but the only way they will learn is if they do it themselves.

Tell them to beat it. In a much nicer way of course.

Is the transfer something that you wanted, or something you hope to return to? If it was something you wanted and never want to get back to, Id say to ween them off like Jon says. But, if its the other way, Id use it as a "fall back" in case the new position doesnt pan out like you expected and you have it as a safety net. Its a tuff call. Same token, if your trying to shine in the new position and this is interferring, it could cost you both.

I don't understand why you got a party when you still work for the same company. I feel cheated now.

Were you let go because of cutbacks or just outright fired? And that sucks because your boss looks like was using you to keep her butt covered at work.

When you've told someone already, and they persist anyway, start giving them nonsense answers.
Tell them the project's been cancelled, or a key person was fired/transferred/died...

" and they ask me why I drink"

If it persists, your present Supervisor or Manager 'may' say it for you. especially if it is preventing you from getting your current work done.
It may be an 'expected' way of doing business by the Companies Management and you may have to just ride it out.
Don't let it stress you and speak up when you feel you need to and make your Manager aware of your concerns.

Good Luck with the new job and Congrats!!!!!

'Cuz everybody loves the Fuzzybutt. :p

I've decided to just let voice mail pick up any phone calls from the Production Assistant. If she confronts me I'll tell her I've been swamped with work. She's not the sharpest knife in the drawer so I have a feeling it's gonna take her a while to pick up on the hint and a half.
