It's no secret that the greatest hardcore band of all time (THE BAD BRAINS aka THE SOUL BRAINS) are the best band out of Washington DC.
http://www.breakmyface.com/bands/badbrains.html

Back in Washington D.C. in 1977, four black guys formed a jazz/funk outfit called Mind Power. "All the while we was jazz, we wanted to innovate," HR says. "We wanted to be part of something new and different and real. We was continually seeking. And then I saw the Sex Pistols album, and I said, 'BOOM! This is it!" The credit for introducing safety pins and punk rock goes to Sid McCray, an early vocalist for the band.

Influenced by the Pistols, Eater and the Clash, as well as Led Zeppelin, Mind Power changed their name after six months to the Bad Brains and dove head first into punk rock. It was the Clash's version of "Police and Thieves" that introduced the band to reggae. The foursome bought a house in suburban Maryland. They went to jobs and school during the day, and rehearsed furiously at night to build stamina and speed.

**FYI**
All original members are getting back together as The Soul Brains on 11-19-03 at the 9:30 club w/ Murphys Law & Red Tape-
If your into hardcore, harD.C.ore then this is a must show..
Go download some Bad Brains.!

Best ACTIVE bands?

Well, from the NoVA/DC area, I'd say Fugazi, Jenny Toomey, Q and Not U, The Make Up, Deep Dish, The Carlsonics, Thievery Corporation and The Dismemberment Plan (Who technically broke up for solo careers a month or so ago...d'oh!). The rest of the best comes from the VA Beach area...Timbaland, Missy Elliot, The Neptunes, D'Angelo...righteous hip-hop!

Best defunct (Or moved) bands? Well, besides the already mentioned Bad Brains...The High-Back Chairs, Minor Threat, Embrace, Rites of Spring, Nation of Ulysses, Scream, Dag Nasty, Shudder To Think, Jon Spencer (And his various bands), Girls Against Boys, Tsunami and the late, SUPER-GREAT Jawbox.

But this thread SHOULD be overwhelmed by NYC bands. NYC has about a billion more classic bands than we'll EVER have.

THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND IS WORSE THAN HITLER.

Bruce isn't a band, and I'd venture to say that the E Street Band barely deserves the title. Damn NJ to hell for letting that crusty white-trash bar band somehow become a big stadium showboat. NJ's music over the years is a grotesque slideshow of how image-oriented, shit-headed, and purely talentless white musicians can get if given the chance to play at some dump like the Stone Pony. The best music ever produced in Jersey were the thousands of jazz albums produced in Newark and Englewood Cliffs. Fuck Bruce.

Well, I grew up in PA. Perkasie in Bucks County to be precise.

The drummer from The Dead Milkmen went to my school and his Mom taught me in A/V and his Dad taught History at high school. The Mikmen are technically from Philly. They are the best band from PA that I know of.

Currently there is Stellastarr* who is from NYC but I went to high school with their Guitarist Michael and he has always amazed me with his guitar playing. Their debut album is out now. PLUG! PLUG!

I'm going to have to say, you're an ass dart!

Minor Threat was the band in the D.C. area it's the first band you think of when someone says "hardcore", "punk" and you couldn't begin to compare any member of Bad Brains to what Ian Mackaye has done to help the scene.

Best band from my state is waaaay too broad. I can break it down, though.

Best band from my high school: Greenberry Woods. They really never turned into the mid-90's alt pearl-jam-ish superstars they could have been, but they are still the best band from my High School and that ain't not bad.

Best band from my county: Kix. It was the early eighties, these guys were rocking western Maryland with their long hair and polished hard rock sound. When making the trip to play in Los Angeles, a little known band from PA was playing before, that looked a lot like them, sounded a lot like them. The band was Poison and naturally got huge a couple of years later.

Band band from my state: Hard to say really. There have been quite a few band from MD get big lately, the Good Charlottes and SR-71s. But in my opinion Jimi's Chicken Shack is the best band out of my state. But they don't really exist, or at least don't play around much anymore. It's a shame.

(for those of you in VA these two bands from Richmond are some of your best, in my opinion)
