View Full Version : Music and the Sense of Smell it Evokes

The reaction (smell) I have to some songs is nothing short of uncanny. I am curious as to what similiar experiences others may have had regarding music and the "smell" they evoke. This usually will only occur when there are little or no distractions of any kind. In my case is it extrodenarily powerful. I'll share two of mine.
E.L.O's - "Strange Magic": I can distinctfully smell my former girlfriend's old air conditioner when we shared an apartment a few years ago. That summer I would rehearse that song over and over for a play I was in not to mention I LOVE the song.
Kemkraft 400's - "Zombie Nation": I can smell "Versace Versus" like it was doused over my keyboard. My friends and I used to have that cranked as we would get ready to hit NYC when going out. This just happened to me again when I heard "Zombie Nation" earlier hence the reason I am posting it now.

Thanks Mike, I thought this was a common trait amongst most people. I have dozens of these "episodes" and am amazed this is even recognized by modern science.

The only smells I recall are b.o. and beer farts.
I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

No Prob Steels!
FYI; the Savantic Duo beat me to it. I remember an R+F show where this very subject was discussed at length. Got a lot of phones.
I don't have it, or it's not as it is described in some places where people are having vivid auditory hallucinations with different colors filling the air.
And I hesitate to use the word 'hallucination' because, for me, this may be one of many repressed sensitivities that for some, well, arent repressed.
Meaning, our sense of smell, for some reason, compared to other mammals, is horrific. Any dog has 100x the sensitivity, and a search dog? they can find parts per Billion.
What happened that our sense of smell got so bad? Some say it was at the expense of another part of the brain when it was rapidly evolving. Specifically, and this is only a guess that happens to resonate with me, it may have been during the explosion of growth that occurred to our brains once we started working those oppsable thumbs and started working with tools.

This usually only happens to me if I'm listening to music and drifiting off to sleep...I'll typically wake up and THINK I had smelled/seen/experienced something based around the music...though it's not actually a "real" dream since it's more of a "waking sleep", so I think Mike calling them "hallucinations" is pretty spot-on.

Most of the shit music available on the NYC/NJ radio waves reminds me of the swampy ass+sulfur+deadhopesanddreams smell that floats over the Meadowlands and the greasy garbage odors of Sayreville and South Amboy.
