Ok, so on Friday I made the mistake of taking the lid off of a very HOT stainless steel pan and got a hell of a burn on my thumb.

Question - why (physiologically speaking) do burns like this blister? Why the fluid?

The Skinocules that got burnt react and the swellocules and the blisterocules and the clearfluidocules go to the site, bringing the much needed healocules. Sadly, the Ouchocules are also damaged.

A second degree burn damages layers of your skin below the epidermis (its outermost layer). The damaged tissues/blood vessels/etc. seep liquid (essentially it's your blood, but without blood cells in it), and it gets trapped under the outermost layer of your skin, making a blister. Don't pop it, and eventually new skin will grow beneath it, the liquid will be resorbed, and the skin on top will fall off. The liquid also contains a lot of various factors that seem to help blisters heal.

Of course, I don't know anyone that DOESN'T pop their blisters, so if you're going to do that make sure you do it with a sterilized needle and go to a doctor if the liquid that comes out of the blister is anything besides clear (it might be infected). Make sure you put an anti-bacterial cream on it and keep it covered. Personally I really like Spenco Second skin.

well, sometime last night the fluid was reabsorbed in the burn. The skin has a slightly off color, and has no sense of touch. I'm gonna leave it alone this week and see how it goes. It was hard to resist the urge to pop it.

Don't forget the antibacterial cream and some kind of covering for it (those new breathable bandages are great). You don't want to accidentally rip off the skin and let germs into it.
