View Full Version : Sick Days

I have well over 100 paid sick days accrued at work, but I never use them unless I'm really sick. When I was growing up, my father never stayed home unless he was sick as a dog, and that was extremely rare.

My brother is a trauma surgeon, and they have an unwritten policy that unless you're sick enough to be admitted to the hospital, you shouldn't call in sick. Well, I don't think that's right, but I guess that's just the way it has to be when you work in an emergency room.

I supervise 4 people, and it pisses me off when they call in sick. There is this one guy who tranferred to my department in June, and he's a little slick. He's already been out sick 3 days, all of them suspect. His first was the Friday before his wedding. I can appreciate the fact that he needed the day off, but you know what - use a fucking personal day or vacation day. He was already scheduled for 2 full weeks of vacation, what's another day?

Then he called in sick on a Monday, everyone's favorite sick day. I looked at his employee calendar, which included his attendance from the other department, and I noticed that he had already been out sick 81/2 days this year - most of them Fridays or Mondays.

Then he called in sick again last week, when I knew for a fact that he had something going on in Philadelphia. He told us on Tuesday that he might be late on Thursday coming back from Philadelphia -and he has the balls to call in sick on Wednesday. Piece of shit.

So I tried to emphasize the importance of good attendance to him in a relatively gentle way, and he had the nerve to ask me what I was trying to say. So I told him what I'm trying to say is that you call in sick too much.

I hate to do that, because there's always the possibilty that a person is not feeling well, but at a certain point you have to say fuck it. Sick days are for sick people. If a woman needs to miss a day or two each month, she could be having her period, but a real man needs to show up for work unless he's sick in a contagious kind of way.

Now, with all of that said, what is your approach to using your sick days? Does your boss say anything? Bear in mind that even if he or she doesn't say anything, your boss resents it and won't cut you the same slack as someone with good attendance.

Johnny,
I was raised with the same work ethic as you. When I worked for the city, I had unlimited sick time. All the years that I worked there, the only times that I was out sick was when I got hurt on the job and was ordered home and one other time when I needed surgery. I can recall going to work many times with a fever or a cold so bad I could hardly breathe. I just feel so guilty if I ever have to call in sick because, although it sounds egotistical, I feel that I am needed at work and my presence there does make a different. Thank God there are some people out there that take responsibility for their actions!!!!

My sick days don't roll over, so I usually end up using them all in the fall before they expire. But other than that, I try to use as few as possible, and it ticks me off when employees just use them left and right, and then keep calling out even when they're out of sick days and don't bother to see a doctor.

I look at it two ways...either you really don't want this job and you're wasting both yours and my time. Or you're actually so sick that you NEED to get medical attention before your condition(s) seriously effect you, your job, and those around you.

my dad was the same way and it rubbed off on me for a little while, then i had a change of heart...

when i worked in the Colgate Palmolive plant, if you didn't come in you didn't get paid and i took one sick day in four years...

then i went to work for a Corporation and they give you six sick days per year. the first year i took none and they didn't pay you for any time you didn't take. then i began to make sure I used them all. the way i look at it now is "take what they give you"

They have already done surveys that Americans work more hours than anyone. Let's give ourselves a little break once in awhile...

i had a manager that thought it was an 'integrity' issue and you had very little integrity if you took sick days. to me it was the wrong approach. there is nothing management can do, they are providing you 6 sick days and people are gonna call out. there is no need to get upset over it.

You're 13, you can miss school if you're sick, and you can probably fake it every now and then. Do they have some kind of policy? Do you get left back if you're out too much?

The difference between school and work is that when you miss school, your teacher doesn't have to help you catch up. But when you miss work, the clients can't be ignored. So it makes more work for your boss, who in turn hates you.

I appreciate the work ethic of people who come to work sick, but sometimes I really wish they wouldn't. They end up getting other people sick. I'm especially sensitive to this; all it takes is a stiff breeze to get me sick, and I get VERY sick due to my condition. Plus, when I go to work sick, I usually sound and look awful, usually worse than I feel, and end up making other people uncomfortable.

I draw the line at a fever. If I have a fever, I don't go to work. Other than that, I usually go.

It was nice meeting you too, Funk, and your lovely wife. As for the sick days, 6 is not that much.

The guy that I'm talking about is a little too cocky. He's new to our department. He needs to prove himself. I've been kicking myself for being too friendly, talking about sports and things like that, so he gets too relaxed. Our quality control department made a number of calls, and sure enough there was some negative feedback.

I can't let it get out of control. He got a nice raise moving to my department, and when he interviewed he said something about other people being "lazy", while he is not. It wasn't my decision to hire him. In any event, if he wants to talk the talk, he's got to walk the walk.

OK, I was kinda joking, but I know that if you miss 14 days of a half year course or 28 days of a full year course you fail it. 2 failed courses and you're left back.

Times, they are a changin'.

Not all companies "carry over" sick days anymore. Mine doesn't. We get 8 a year, so I take them. You don't carry them over and after 5 consecutive sick days, I am forced to go on disability (which I am paying for) and once I am on "disability" my company will pro-rate my piddley "bonus."

Not all companies work alike.

There's another guy on my team who uses sick days galore to the point where he doesn't have any left, so he calls in vacation days. Technically we don't have to allow that since vacation has to be approved in advance.

On the other hand, we have a girl who started 1+ years after this guy. She was out sick ONE DAY while she was pregnant. So guess what, she was promoted and will be involved in evaluating his performance.

I don't want to cover for anyone while they're out. I don't want to constantly fall behind on my own projects to the point where I'm working until 7 while everyone else leaves at 5. I need to get home early to post on this messageboard.

In my school, if you're sick more than 9 or 10 days during a semester you're suspended. Something like that...I'm not sure.

Unless, of course, you can PROVE that you were sick all those days. Other than that, you'd be pretty screwed.

O, and my sis works with this one person who takes EVERY Monday off, either as a sick day or a personal day. Pisses me off how lazy people can be.

Ok, here's how sick leave works for the government.
We accrure 4 hours every two weeks. this works out to 13 days a year. for annual leave(personal time) we get four hours every two weeks for the first 3 years. Then we get 6 hours. when we reach 15 years, we get 8 hours.

There's no problems calling in sick. There's a rule that after 3 days you have to bring in a note, but that's rarely enforced. They once tried to enforce it with me, but I beat them out of it, by claiming the last day was persoanl leave, not sick.

When I worked for INS I called in all the time. We worked 7 days a week, with a forward rotating day off. I called in once a month, everyone did. we called them mental health days.

Now with DHS, we get three day weekends every other week. I've built up hundreds of hours.

I've got about 140 hours of sicktime saved up. Believe me, I woulda loved to have called in sick on Friday, but I know that I'll end up screwing over somebody else if I do. I actually hope to get sick just so I can use some sick hours and they don't go to waste when I get a new job.. assuming I ever do.

I woulda loved to have called in sick on Friday, but I know that I'll end up screwing over somebody else if I doyet they never think twice about screwing you over whenever they feel like it. it's nice to be responsbile and all, but that's no reason to let people take advantage of you.

I just got out of school and have only been at my job for about a month. So my sick days have not really kicked in.

I suffer from really bad migraines, so the only time I take or will take a sick day is when I am in unbearable pain or when I can not make it out of bed. If I have a regular cold, I will go to work. I need to save my sick days for when I feel like a jackhammer is smaking me on the temple, which happens quite frequently.

I have to be real sick to call in sick - with the exception of 2 times that my son was sick so I had to take him to the doctor's and stay home with him, I havent called in sick in years.

In 5 years with my company I've taken 4 sick days. People take them all the time here and sometime I think I should just take one for the hell of it, but I too was rasied by a hard working father. I just don't take them unless I'm really sick.

If you add up all the weekdays in a year. That's 260 days Mon-Fri.

I get 10 holidays.
I get 10 vacation days.
I get 5 sick days.
I get 2 personal days.

Is 5 days really that bad in the grand scheme of things? I'm hung over, my throat is sore or I just feel like shit, I'm going to take a sick day.

I respect the people who believe that they should be very ill to take a sick day. But, I'm not as bad as people who come to work sick just so they don't have to use their sick days. Of course, they get everyone else sick in the office.
