I've been dating a black girl for a few weeks now, and my friends won't talk to me anymore. I'm really shocked that all these people refuse to talk to me. This is 2003 and even my minister said not to date colored girls. What is wrong with DC?

Well, that all depends on what means more to you...her or your friends.

First of all, if you're going to date other races, unfortunately you're going to encounter many ignorant assholes and it WILL make the relationship more complex than if you were dating a white girl. (But there are problems with every relationship.)

Your minister has no biblical basis for saying not to date other races, it says that NOWHERE. The only people they say you shouldn't marry are other religions, but that's a whole other topic.

I've dated many black guys and the reactions can be very hard to deal with sometimes, but if you love the person, it's worth it. BUT, you could possibly lose friends and maybe family over this so you have to decide if it's worth it to you and I also think you should reevaluate the relationship with these 'friends' if they are shallow and ignorant enough to still be racists.

Anyway, I feel for your situation. I have dated non-black men and it is not easy. There were days when I questioned whether all the stress was worth it. No matter what anyone says, interracial relationships are still taboo and there are a lot of people who will not agree with your decision. I believe that anyone who engages in interracial/ethnic dating has to make certain decisions, are they strong enough to deal with opposition and racism, is the relationship they are in worth the work and sacrifice, are they willing to possibility lose friends and family?

I know my family would never approve if I ever dated someone who wasn't white.

It makes me sick because I've found myself attracted to men of different races and I'd always have to stop myself from making a move for fear of my family.

Now that i've been out from under their "rule" for years I can do whatever I want. But I would never dream of bringing home, say..a black man. They would just flip. And because of this, I can never get into a serious relationship with someone of a different race.
