I seriously hate people who are part of the "punk" scene, NOFX, Good charolette, ect...who seem to feel that every kid who listens to Punk rock is going to just bash our president and be against certain things and tilt to the left. I for one, listen to punk rock. I love bands like the bouncing souls, the clash, dropkick murphys, the misfits and the ramones, but they need to realize that just because I listen to this music doesn't mean I am going to agree with their inane stances.

PS: NOFX sucks anyway.

Next, I'd like to add that this whole idea of "fuck authority" and all that other nonsense is just plain bullshit. The fact that kids are listening to this music and walking away with a message that is so hate driven makes me want to spew. And lastly, if you don't like these bands, why listen?....why put down the group of people that happen to listen to them? And why put down what they stand for? It's being hypocritical and naive, I bet you don't even realize what they are singing about half of the time. And it's funny that you hate NOFX for "bashing the President" which really is just the Political stance of the band but you like The Clash who were the same in certain regards.

Wait until you have to go to college, better yet..wait until you have to provide for yourself and a family then see how far "fuck authority" gets you.

Here's a little shocking revelation for you as well. PUNK has had a tendency to lean to the left from the get go. Whether it was THE CLASH displaying their frustration of the Ronald McDonald-ing of Great Britain ala "I'm So Bored With the USA" to Richard Hell's "Blank Generation" (which you can argue was a rally against the disco daydream haze that most of the jet set were caught up in) there was very little input from the right side of the line. Perhaps with the exception to The Dictators and Skrewdriver (who's recording were more accessible on both sides of the pond.)
To suggest that people down with the scene are here to promote a one sided agenda "who seem to feel that every kid who listens to Punk rock is going to just bash our president and be against certain things and tilt to the left" is ridiculous. It's been my experience that Punk is against any sort of idolatry and zealotry. (thus the phrase No Gods, No Masters). This unfortunately is a concept that generation after generation gets lost since well.. Record companies want to sell records and if the kids don't want to worship idols.. it's a tough sale. So they sweep that under the carpet and offer the new SUPERPUNK band who also run their own clothing line [more merch and junk for you to buy.] Check out the lyrics of Dead Kennedy's "Anarchy For Sale", I think it conveys a rather similar view.
Now granted a lot of anti-Reagan and anti Tipper Gore (note which parties these two yobs belong to) sentiment in the 80s was due to big brother breathing down our necks. Think tanks like the MORAL MAJORITY were trying to get every kid in school who didn't aspire to be a coke sniffing yuppie checked into shock treatment. (If you had the luxury of being enrolled in public school in the 80s.. you know exactly what I'm talking about. Health Class turned into the Salem Witch Trials.) BUT this wasn't a punk thing, the metal kids were targets too (which is an entirely different rant).
As for the DROPKICK MURPHYS to even suggest that they are some sort of Ultra Left band is absurd. One of their original Bagpipe players trained the BOSTON PD bagpipers. They bring out the PD pipers during their Boston gigs... and they raised money for fallen FD members. I did an int. with Ken Casey a while back and he targeted the perception of ACAB (ALL COPS ARE BASTARDS - 4-Skins) as being close minded. So... take that how you want. AND NO.. he didn't get me to join some Union or another.

Punk has been about taking control of your own destiny, and to NOT take accept the fate that has been handed down to you.

I worded my statement incorrectly. I know the dropkick murphys aren't left wing. Thats one of the reasons I love them, I just listed those bands because those are punk rock bands that I particulary love. And because I listen to punk rock music, it seems I have to show this image of me being anti authority and anti war and shit. And myself being a sophmore in highschool see that everday. I'd add in there GVAC that it was more of a revolt against moneygrubbing dinosaur bands, not just the hippies, those cats hated Led Zep, the Who, Stones, etc because they'd lost their way.
You had to go to a fuckin' hockey arena or football stadium to see them play this stale, ponderous, synth-washed crap.

you seriously picked the worst bands to bring up losing their way about. all three of those had incredably respectable careers from the begining to now. if you can tell me an example of how the stones lost their way, or the who, without those two bands good rock would be non-existant today. and led zep well they are the second best hard rock band ever. if by being so good that it took a stadium to let all their fans see them so be it, its less dickish to allow for everyone who wants to see your show to see it than to have a limited number of tickets at a much higher price.

my final comment the stones are and will always be the greatest rock band ever.

yeah I really wasn't arguing with much about Keith's post other than the "NOFX sucks" thing. I definitely don't care on the level that you do so I'm not trying to use examples to support your points. I'm merely concentrating on the fact that I think keith is an asswipe for saying that "NOFX sucks".

I definitely seperate my politics from my music....it's a policy I have. I don't listen to people who I know I'm smarter than.

Nobody's saying these bands WEREN'T great...but to think that they haven't stumbled in their latter years is a little absurd. But they ARE bad examples for the kind of bands punk was trying to "rebel" against. Nugent, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Yes, Bread, Aerosmith, Chicago...whatever. Take your pick. These bands were just bloated and boring and as seperated from the audience as possible. Punk kicked that idea in the nads...or so I heard.
