Nothing better then a good Hockey goon. Ken was a man amongst boys once the gloves were dropped. The man had no fear and would step toe-to-toe with anyone that deserved a beating. As an Islander fan, I went from loving Pat LaFontaines' goal scoring to ken Baumgartners sticking up for him in no time. Pierre Turgeon most def shouldve givin him a Rolex, and id be upset to learn that he didnt. Anyone hits these guys from behind or gets a stick up on them, watch out.
Tie Domi had legendary battles with Ken, often battling to a draw. You always knew when the Ranger and Isles met up, that it was going to be one hardcore event. It wasnt "will they fight", but "when will they fight". Joey Kocur was another one. Bomber seemed to have his number. He went after the great Bob Probert without hesitaion after Bob got dirty with an Islander. That takes brass ones my friends. McCarty, Marty McSorley, Ronald McDonald, whoever wants to play rough has a fight coming and it helps keep the game clean and safer. Thats the beauty of it.
Ken was a sound technician with great balance. He would always be able to keep his distance with the right hand and keep that left arm back and his head down. Then you better get ready to duck, because you know that left is coming at your grill with some force behind it. He would settle for pounding someone helmet if thats all he could do eventhough he knew his hand wouldnt feel great afterwards. It would still hurt the other guy too, and thats the goal. You dont drop the gloves thinking "I dont want to get hurt here", you drop them thinking "I am going to hurt this guy" and if you hurt yourself in the process by punching them, so be it. Ken was a true competitor, and a mans man.
