Ron is good. Very good.

This week there was quite a lot of talk of movies. And a bit about an article about people who were legends in the 1950s who are unknown now, not because they died, but because they're still alive and all but forgotten.

ANYway, here's an example of good 'time-machining' meaning the ability to remember not only a movie, but the societal Vibe that they movie created.

Example: He brought up Poltergeist. He shows it to someone young, and theyre like, huh? what?

But Ron remembers, as do I, that even though Poltergeist in 2003 may come off as a snoozer, when this movie came out of theatres, it literally exploded.

Like Alien, and Jaws, and others, but not Many others, it was like there were NO other movies playing.

Did you Hear about it?

Oh my God I heard the part about the swimming pool.

I heard it's way too scary for anyone under 21

This is what people were saying, and saying it all over. If you were grabbing your smokes in the 7-11 and you mentioned you were on your way to see Poltergeist, youd get a reaction from some people in line. Bars? Clubs? You mentioned it, you knew you had yourself a conversation started. It was That Hot.

Maybe, it's as they discussed, movie trailers today often are a compilation of the Very Best Moments of the movie, and who wants to see that ahead of time. Remember getting surprised???

THIS is another reason Movies like Poltergiest and ALien worked, and caused such a social stir.

You didnt know Shit about the movie before you went in. The internet? in 1979? I dunno, was it ARPANET still? But there were No discussion groups, no downloads of the movie, no press kits with practically the entire movie plot given away in text and pictures. Basically no spoilers; it was not difficult to go into Alien, or Poltergeist, with absolutely No idea what it was about, or what it looked like.

Hell, the Trailers didnt show Shit.

Example: Alien.

No one else remembers how badly people were freaked about this movie? I mean people debating whether to see it or not as they watched the crowd leaving who just saw it, watching people who obviously had had the shit scared out of them.

The Alien Trailer and TV commercial? A Picture of an Egg, and the words 'in space, no one can hear you scream'. That was it. Poltergeist? Cant remember for sure, but I think the entire Trailer was the snowy TV and the girl saying her line.

I remember Time or Newsweek had a story on Alien, and the pictures they had showed almost Nothing. And no one gave it away.

All I know is I saw it in theatres 3 times when it came out. All three times Not a Soul relaxed during the movie. I mean, people were nervous and dreading whatever the fuck it was that was so bad you could hear the screams from way out here in the lobby.

And as for the has-been who faded away. It is indeed difficult to remember but there was a time where people we laugh at were The Shit. I mean IT. Everyone wanted them.

The Osbournes. The day after the first show aired, America went Osbourne. It didnt last long, but it was fucking everywhere. It's all you heard about.

Weird.

Is it a GOOD thing that the world "exploded" over "Poltergeist"?

Another reason I wish the show was in NY, good post.

Some other ones that come to mind:

The Godfather and the horse scene. Everyone talked about that.

Of course Star Wars, particularly the bar scene.

Last Tango in Paris and Midnight Cowboy, the only X rated movie to win the Oscar I think.

Behind the Green Door.

The Shining.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Believe it or not, Grease.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.

More recently The Crying Game, Pulp Fiction, and The Sixth Sense which I hated.

I assassin down the avenue.

Jaws

that's a great example, considering i'm from a generation that doesn't get that movie's appeal. I know that I can say that I can't enjoy watching it. I guess I can understand how it worked for earlier generations, but I can't watch the movie without falling asleep. I missed the boat.....

and considering Midnight Cowboy (which I never knew the name of until now, I only knew it as "the X-rated movie that won the Oscar") was brought up:
1) when did it come out?
2) why was it rated-X (violence?)
3) was there someone killed while they were making it?

These questions have been in the back of my mind for the longest time, and rather than look it up now, I'd rather one of the "old-timers" tell me about it :)

I remember when Poltergeist came out and the vibe it created. The swimming pool scene especially and the clown! I remember friends talking about the clown. After much begging my parents let me see it. Sure as hell scared me. But now I consider that a classic. Whenever it is on TV, I'll watch it.

I remember seeing the preview for Empire Strikes Back and they just showed a glipse of the giant snow-walkers (AT-ATs?) and just thinking WHOA that is going to be the best!

Movies did have that magical feeling back then. Very rarely will I feel that today.

True. Back then if you didn't see the movie in the theater then you never got a chance to see it at all. No cable, no VCR. You could only hope that one of the networks would show it years later and not chop it up too much.

you know what, People are not interested in taking chances with movies anymore, If you look at Jaws and all the problems they had making that movie it would have never been released. Hollywood makes this crbon copy of the same movie again and agai, thinking this is the best sell. the worst is now when you think the movie looks really good and sucks.

It hurts

LYRICS

Well, hey there, baby, do you want to make the scene?
I said a-hey there, baby, do you want to make the scene?
Awww, well, come on over, baby, step into my time machine.

You better jump into my action, I'm gonna' make you feel right.
Awww, jump into my action, I'm gonna' make you feel right.
Don't worry 'bout tomorrow 'cause I'm gonna' love you tonight.

Step into the front row, I'm gonna' show you how.
Step into the front row, I wanna' show you how.
Don't worry 'bout no time we can always come back to right now.

Awww, I'm gonna' give it to you ...

When you wanna' come back, we just turn about.
When you wanna' come back, we just turn about.
But we ain't gonna' come back, 'till there ain't no doubt.

Now don't it get good to you? do you know what I mean?
Now don't it get good to you? don't you know what I mean?
Well, come on over, baby, jump into my time machine.

Ahem!

While we're geezing, here's a beaut:
Back when the Velvet Underground first came around in the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, they had these strobe lights, see?
At one show, a coupla people had heart attacks, and speculation that the strobes caused them grew to a "fact" that persisted for years.

Mike, please answer honestly - I get the impression you're 38-44, right? I am 37 and I SO remember the whole Alien vibe - to the point that we had PG and R, but they pondered what to do with that as X wasnt an accepted rating and had a bad connotation.

Just wondering.

...then there's the one about smoking banana peels.
Some clown back in the mid-60s noticed that there was a chemical similarity between something in banana peels and LSD or some other halucinogenic drug. He postulated in a research paper in college that a person could get high by smoking the peels.
That would have been the end of it had the government not found out.
Knowing they just couldn't sieze all the bananas in the U.S. or ban them, some genius decided that the thing to do would be to warn everybody.
So out came the warnings: "DON'T SMOKE BANANAS!
Which of course caused many, many people to try it who wouldn't have otherwise.

(never tried it myself)
