I know that some people really enjoy science and some parts of it can be interesting. But why do we need to know it?

Note that I am not bashing science in any way, its just an honest question.

Ron and Fez were the last hosts purged from the WNEW-FM hot talk era, and ever since they left their fans have been trying to get some station to bring them back to town.

I've heard this question asked in relation to Calculus or philosophy, or even art.

Put aside quantum physics or organic chemistry.

Start with a basic definition of science:

Science is the field of study which attempts to describe and understand the nature of the universe in whole or part.

Still no interest?

I assassin down the avenue.

A good way to look at it Keith, is that if anything can cure major diseases it will come as a result of science. People such as yourself with MS may one day see a cure. When that day comes, it will be the scientists and dedicated people in medicine who will bring it about.

basic science research lays the foundations for improving various
aspects of life. perhaps the most obvious are the ways basic
physics, biology, and chemistry research improves medicine. if
you look at various nobel prizes, you can see people who have
been doing what appears to be odd or irrelevant research (eg.
how yeast cells divide,) end up providing basic knowledge about
human diseases (in this case, how cell division goes wrong in
cancer.) for examples see:
biology:

chemistry:

I guess you dont technically need to know science, but you also dont need to know how to play video games or need to listen to music. Its just something thats an interesting subject to ponder over and it helps train your mind so you can function in a world where its hekpfull to see relationships between events you encounter and things your doing and drawing conclusions that will help you out. Everything you learn, science, history, math, or whatever, is an excercise for your mind. If you dont use a muscle, it atrophys, the same with your mind. Its good for you!

I find medical science to be cool. I'm taking an american sign language class and we learned about the ear and how it works. I like learning about our bodies, but I could honestly care less about why a plant is green.

as a science teacher my students ask me this all the time...my answer is simple...life itself is all interconnected...from evolution to cell theory to quantum mechanics we have learned that every particle no matter how insignificant its size has a significant impact on every other particle. the other tenent of science is that even through lifes great diversity there isnt much that separates us from each other on a molecular scale, everything is intricately related to something else...like the food chain, water cycle, etc...so whether its a tiny insect or your next door neighbor you should treat all living things and non living things alike with the respect they are due...mmm this beer tastes soo good
