Series cancelled amid controversy (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=638&ncid=762&e=1&u=/nm/20031104/en_nm/leisure_reagans_dc)
Was CBS intimidated into scrubbing the show by the right? I thought this was interesting:
On Friday, Republican National Committee (news - web sites) Chairman Ed Gillespie asked CBS to allow a team of scholars to review the film in advance for historical accuracy. Otherwise, he said, CBS should run a disclaimer informing viewers that the film is a fictional portrayal of the Reagans.

It looked aweful anyway. They never tell the truth in those TV movies. The one they did about Rudy with James Woods was the worst load of crap ever.

You mean to tell me that CBS/Viacom/Infinity caved into pressure from a somewhat small, but vocal group of individuals with loud mouths and narrow minds who happen to disagree with the content of a show ??? Where have I heard this story before............

i hears that they will air the miniseries on Showtime. So it'll air, just not with any ratings. I doubt anyone would've watched anyway. The only miniseries i've ever watched are the Odyssey one and the recent Hitler one.

I wanted to see the scene where "Dutch" answers a question from Bill Casey with first a twitch of the head, a grin, and then "....Why sure, let's give Saddam those chem/bio weapons. Should bring the GOP a big campaign contribution from Dow Chemical..."
Then the Prez follows up with one of those inspirational stories from back in the old days of Hollywood that we all grew to love so well.

You know, this is a form of bullying and censorship that I DO NOT condone. I say, let CBS air whatever the fuck it wants.
See, by airing such a shitty, innacurate depiction of Reagan, CBS just shows it's true colors and makes us hate them more than we do.
And in America, if the Libs want a movie full of lies, they should be allowed to have it. Just don't expect me to get behind you or feel like looking to you for much entertainment or news from then on.

I like how everybody has an opinion on a show that nobody has actually seen.

Seems fair.
I like how everybody has an opinion on a show that nobody has actually seen.
More like we're basing our opinions on the accounts of those who have seen the film and documented evidence of the film's contents.
The general consensus about the film, from those who've seen it, from anyone who's not a diehard liberal - it's in poor taste at the least, deliberately biased at worst.
I think they should play it if they want, just provide a disclaimer stating that it's fictional.

If CBS was ever really intimidated by the right, Dan Rather would no longer be anchoring the evening news.
Maybe the film was really (shocker) just a piece of crap.

I saw how bad that "Hitler" movie they did was.
Should we honestly think this would have been any better?

When you have the television critics for The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times all saying this isn't right, no one can say this is merely a right wing conspiracy.
Even Hillary, the queen of conspiracy theory herself, has been quiet on this.

I like how the Republican party demanded to see it and offer their "editorial comments", as if the Gipper is something they have a copyright on.
Anything they haven't "cleared" can't be accurate or worth viewing.
Great country we've got here, eh?

Oh, come on.
I can't STAND Reagan, but I can understand exactly why those who look up to him, his supporters, his party and his family have issues with this film. When you have people involved in its making coming right out about various parts and saying, "oh, yeah, we made this up and this and this and this," AND the subject and most of the people in it are still alive (And many still actively in politics), it makes PERFECT sense why they would take issue with something this slanderous.
It's one thing to have a "different take" on someone's life...it happens all the time...but from the sound of things, this was well, WELL beyond that. Even Oliver Stone was horrified. Now THAT is slanderous.
Now, as for THIS...
And in America, if the Libs want a movie full of lies, they should be allowed to have it. Just don't expect me to get behind you or feel like looking to you for much entertainment or news from then on.
...by THIS logic I shouldn't watch Fox news because I think "24" and "The O.C." and "Joe Millionaire" are among the worst shows ever to make it to air and because I hate them so. AGAIN with the "liberals as a herd" mentality. Because a TV movie about Reagan with a liberal slant means you have to "give up" on the news outlets? Madness...

Huh?
Missed the Oliver Stone thing.
Kinda makes you wonder why the short 5 or 6 minute outtake they released would be inaccurate stuff.
Oh, and MOJO, what about the general issue of the GOP angling for editorial control?

Means I was saying that the presidential slander king himself ("JFK"? "Nixon"?) was horrified. Shot for a joke. Guess I failed.

Sounds great, can they run one of those on Fox when Hannity or O'Reilly echo the fictitious claim about how the Sudan was going to personally deliver Osama to the US until Clinton turned them down, and such similar lies? It would only be fair.

Just change the names and call it, oh, say, Primary Colors.
No wait, that one's taken. How's about Secondary Colors, or Tertiary Colors?
Then we can all get a laugh at the disclaimer: "...any resemblance to any living person is coincidental and not intended by the authors..."

Here's a couple of articles from Slate on the hullaballoo
No. 1 (http://slate.msn.com/id/2090834/)
No. 2 (http://slate.msn.com/id/2090898/)
The most interesting bits are the quotes from the people who worked for him which portray him as, at best, detached. Why the selective outrage by Gillespie and crew? Oh yeah, because they can.
That said, I do believe it would have been kinder to have waited to make this kind of movie after Ron & Nancy were off in the Great Beyond. But I have no doubt the Outraged would be saying "Look these Lib-er-als are picking on the guy after he's dead."
Anyway, I prefer movies with more women's prison shower scenes.

This film actually had Nancy getting raped in a women's prison shower with a broomstick.
Fucking Barbara Streisand and her artistic license.

For anybody who still cares the movie is being run on Showtime tonight, 8 - 11PM. Since it conflicts with the Simpsons I'll be recording it & will (eventually) report back on anything interesting or outrageous.
PS Tall James, was that a broomstick or Frank Sinatra's D?

I was hoping the mini-series would have Reagan's "welfare queen in Chicago" who was collecting welfare under over 100 different aliases that no one was ever able to track down...

I watched Ralphie's head being stuffed into a bowling ball bag instead.
