What do you consider to be the best "Greatest Hits" compilation ever released?

No box sets or double CD's please unless you are choosing one "compact disk" from whatever respective package.

You may choose and post only one. Please respect this stipulation and remember a large part of this process is making difficult choices.

My choice was released in 1981 and only available in select record stores due to it being an import from England. Years later it was pulled and has been out of print for well over a decade to better increase sales for their box set. This is the ORIGINAL (I own a copy) and is extremely hard to find.

Now "Eternal E" is just a great collection of Easy- E classic and some newer releases. Very Good. I also Have that Queen CD you spoke of. I'll have to give it a listen tonight after hearing you rave about it, I didnt even know it was rare.

I have a very good Nirvana Cd called singles that none of you could ever possibly have, and i just stay hard throughout the whole thing cause it so good. Id say those are all my favs

My all-time favorite compilation is "Message In a Box" by The Police. It includes every single album, all the songs, all the b-sides to singles, as well as live performances. It also has a book that tells the story of the band, shows what all the albums, singles, tour paraphenalia, posters, etc...what they all looked like.

Aside from thatas far as "Greatest Hit's" compilations go I've always liked "Hot Rocks 1964-1971" by The Rolling Stones

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006EXDM.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

As well as The Beatles "1967-1970"

Thanks to the people that had the "discipline" to follow a few simple rules.

Come on, any "best of" worth its salt is usually two discs. I can see excluding box sets, but not allowing more than one disc is ridiculous. You'd be cutting out a good 75% of the best stuff out there, and most "best of's" put out in the last 10 years.

Besides, around half of mine are single disc and only one more than two (The Cash set, which is three). And they fuckin' RULE. Why would I put a "best of" that ISN'T the best just because the band's best one has multiple discs? If it's not a box set, I say it's fair game. So there.

Dont know if itd be considered a "greatest hits" CD but:

Nah, it wouldn't be. That final Jawbox collection is just rarities, B-sides, live cuts and covers. But either way, it's a fuckin' beatiful slice of an album. You KNOW a band was great when their "throwaways" are better than most "real" albums bands today can put out.

All hail Jawbox.

Shit happens, get over it. You cannot control people's responses. They can and will post whatever they want in a thread as long as they are posting within RF.Net's guidelines. You don't like it, you're welcome to talk to me privately.

Return to the topic at hand, if this thread continues to degrade, it will be locked. Thank you, have a good evening.

I agree and am fully aware of this yet it is ridiculous that just about every thread of the kind in question is derailed due to this nonsense. I am a big fan of lists and other such oddities so I get frustrated when threads like this one get constantly screwed up. I am always very polite when I ask people to please respect the guidelines.

Thanks to the people that had the "discipline" to follow a few simple rules. The reason I put these stipulations in is to create a more focused and interesting topic that makes you pit some of your favorite "Greatest Hits" against each other. As for those that sadly can't control their impulses I feel sorry for. In the future please stay away from my threads because it's posts like that that can quickly create a negative snowball effect.

So follow your "rules" and stay away from other people's threads if you have nothing to contribute except insults. Cause you've been violating the Board rules for a long time.

I started a thread with 2 simple rules and the first two responses (amongst too many others) completely disregarded them causing everyone else to follow to get an immediate false impression of what I was asking for. If you don't like it don't participate but I'll be damned if I sit quiet while the thread goes to shit as it just did. Again, if you cannot control your impulses either take a timeout or just stay away from my threads. Remember, I wasn't asking for plutonium.

You don't like my contribution to the Strokes thread or my "Infinimatrix" post? Don't read it or post a dumb ass reply. Or did I need to say spell it out for you and add to my original post that "no dumb ass replies" were allowed?

You called me manic in a thread. Who suggested that to you? Expound if you'd like. But be prepared for me to get all Maximus Decimus Meridius on you in my reply.

Why not embrace the fact that some people are just into different things and at a different level than, say, a person who wants to know what people's favorite hot and cold sandwiches are?

(nota bene: I'm still thinking about how to craft my response to your sandwich post; but I need to re-read your original post to see if you set guidelines specifying what temperature range defined "hot" as opposed to just warm and whether I needed to reference exactly how thin, in millimeters, the meat needs to be.)

Do you realize how funny your replies were?

I'm wondering if it's time for you to step out from behind that computer of yours and show your face. Maybe you're really just a teddy bear at heart and we all need to just give each other a big hug.

If you're not, after all this time, I, for one, would like to see if you'd talk your shit in person.

If you do, you'll find out all about the opportunity cost of violating some other simple rules. And they're not for dating my teenage daughter.

You need to chill.

What do you consider to be the best "Greatest Hits" compilation ever released?
No box sets or double CD's please unless you are choosing one "compact disk" from whatever respective package.

I need a ruling:

Alice Fuzzybutt posted The Replacements All For Nothing - Nothing For All. Now it's one cd package, but has two cd's in it. By my read of the rules, she would have had to have picked either the "All For Nothing" disc 1 or the "Nothing For All" disc 2. I considered this to be a "double cd."

Either way, The Replacements are my favorite group (the current issue of Rolling Stone calls them "The Greatest Indie Rock Band of the 80's") but I wouldn't have picked them because the double cd doesn't contain their pre-Reprise albums. Can't be a greatest in my book if it doesn't contain their best album (Let it Be) not to mention the others.

Some other quick notes:

Further Man = Uncle Tupelo Anthology....monolithic, amazing.

Arienette: Now I know how Joan of Arc felt.

Mojo: I thought of that Jam album, but it needs Snap. No That's Entertainment? No Going Underground? No In the City? No Down by the Tube Station? No Town Called Malice? I'll take Snap!.

I don't know how the hell I forgot about this one but the "Queen" CD is "1 a." and this is "1 b." also surpassing the Sabbath CD. Coincidentally this is an import as well. Again a reason why I am particular with the rules is so this can be a tad challenging as well. For example instead of just posting "Hot Rocks" you have submissions such as this below.

http://www.toru.com/sv/album/rolling_stones/jump_back_j.html

If we are playing within the guidelines you can only choose one from a box set or a double CD. For example I would choose Disk II from Rush's "Chronicles".

Why set any rules at all?

A line has to be drawn because we have two, three, four and sometimes eight disk box sets. I think it wouldn't be very fair if I commenced this thread with Pink Floyd's "Shine". The only way to keep this topic within reason is to restrict people to one disk. The bottom line is I'm trying to make this fair while forcing people to make an actual decision opposed to just posting ALL their favorites. That's way to easy, repetitious and boring.

Then why own more than one "best of" comp, period? This is a chance to turn people on to albums they might not have known were out there.

And again, double-albums shouldn't be put with box sets. Double-albums usually have more in common with single disc "best of's" than the more extensive box sets. And box sets are only three discs or more to begin with. Can't leave double-albums out into the cold.

See I read it right. Also, I would imagine that the album has to include "hits", so The Best of Bread had "hits" while The Replacements would be a "Best Of" anyway.

Hmmm. Now I'm thinking Decade by The Allmans is pretty damn good.

YES!!! This is the whole point. You have to choose which is the goal of any kind of list. This thread ceases to be a "list" when people stop making difficult cuts and choices.

You had mentioned that there are two-disc box sets. Box sets are actually three discs or more.

There are a handful (I don't agree that they should be labeled as a box set) of 2 disk box sets available.

My whole thing with greatest hits albums is that if I like a band I'll probably have everything by them that I want. I'll buy a compilation if it has a decent unreleased track or two, or if it's a band that I've been waiting for a greatest hits from so I can have all the songs I know (and like) on one disc. There are times that a greatest hits album surpasses anything else an artist may have done. With that said, I give you...

Sometimes "best of's" are a sad affair, a capper to a band that's essentially over...a brilliant band that spent far, FAR too much time being ignored and who's time at the top was much too short...

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00007A3GE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

And then other times, "best of's" are joyous celebrations of bands that are still going strong and have a ton of both albums and possibility ahead of them...
