When the National Anthem is sung at events, what's your bodily posture when you're at attention?
I usually have my right hand towards my heart (the pledging of allegence posture).
What's yours.

I'm usually taking a leak...but I'm not in the bathroom.
Defeat leads me to anger...anger that leads me to victory!

Hand over my heart, standing, no hat. And NO singing along. I lived on millitary bases as a kid and you even had the anthem playing before movies. The song and the way I act around it is almost like Pavlovian at this point.

I forgot that I used to go to the Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge Brooklyn occasionally to go to the theatre that they had there. It was an odd feeling sitting there for the first time and listening to the anthem come on....then everyone standing up! I jumped right up and thought it was pretty cool.

At attention..........
He he he. Patriotism gets me ROCK HARD!
Just joking. I always remove my hat and stand up. I don't find myself putting my hand on my heart for some reason.

Standing quietly until it ends so I can drink my beer and wait for someone to start a Potvin Sucks chant.

I always do the traditional right hand over heart for the USA. And I'll always stand and salute if
Nikolai Volkoff is singing the Russian National Anthem.

Stand up, hat off. Imagining Hendrix playing it.
But always respectful of it.
Thanks to Reefdwella for the great Sig Pic.

I don't understand putting your hand over your heart like the Pledge of Allegience. That's for the pledge of Allegiance.
I hate when people do it. I refuse to do it. I just put my hands behind my back and put a sad look on my face to show respect.

I only hear it when I go to Yankee games (i go to a shitload a year) and I always wear a Yankee hat. I always take the hat off and put it over my heart, same thing for that ancient recording of God Bless America, Kate Smith right? I dont sing cause im tone deaf.

...ahhhh the days when the teacher would sing the songs and the class would sing along.
I will say this; The Star Spangled Banner is an exceedingly difficult song to sing!
All those arpeggios! and those large intervals!

Sure glad I Googled that before responding; I could have Sworn that was Ethel Merman singing, but that would be "Theres No Business Like..." another Irving Berlin song.
You are correct! And as to being tone deaf, I think one would have to be dead not to hear such an over-the-top performance. Horns blaring, drums drumming, and a voice that pierces like a sandblaster.
Bachelor and Alexander on WABC [no flames please, I know, I know...] often play this to close the show, so if you wanna hear it, there ya go.
A great recording, if showing how beautifully live it is, as Smith [or the band, not sure] is out-of-sync for a measure near the final refrain.

Standing, facing Old Glory, hatless, right hand over heart, mind on the sacrifices of many so we can have such a great country, eyes straining peripherally, left arm ready to smack some fool to attention.
Sometimes I'm good for a creeper.

The Kate Smith version sucks. They should just use a recording of Robert Merrill. It's not the same starting a Yankee game without him... and Eddie Layton playing the keyboards...
standing up, Yankee hat over my chest.

I was born on a military base too. I always stand with my hat off if I have one and my hand on my heart.
Also in the early evening on the base they use to play taps and when they did I stopped even if I was walking til it was finished.

Hell, I put my hand over my heart even if I'm just in the car and the song comes on over the radio.

Yup.
No matter where you were or what everyone was doing, if you heard the bugle, you stopped. It was always oddly serene, everything quiet and still and only the music. Saddest time I ever heard it was when I was at this base in the UK that was on the verge of being shut down and it was probably almost 75% empty. It just seemed so final.
And I can't believe I'm forgetting, but what's played in the morning when the flag is raised? I know the tune, but I can't remember the name...

A fond memory of mine is my first date after moving off base.
I took this gal to the movies.
The house lights went down and I automatically stood and put my hand over my heart, knowing the National Anthem was going to be played and I like to be one of the first to rise.
Then the movie starts (Back then there was the occasional trailer, but not often).
I look down and there's my date looking up at me, quizically.
I recovered in style:
" Uhhhhhh, I'm going for some popcorn and candy, want anything?"
" and they ask me why I drink"
