Not that we did not have any doubt that this guy was guilty, but it is official.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Nov. 17 - A jury on Monday found John Allen Muhammad guilty of murder in the first sniper case to go to trial, concluding he used a rifle, a beat-up car and a teenager who idolized him to kill randomly and terrorize the Washington area during last year's sniper spree. The verdict means Muhammad could face the death penalty. Ten people were killed in the attacks - many of them shot as they went about their daily tasks.

does anyone know what the max sentence for Malvo can be? i don't really think Malvo should be completely held accountable. It really seems to be a situation where the kid was kidnapped and he WAS brainwashed. I think he needs prison time and like reprogramming more than he needs to be killed.

How old was Malvo?
Do you guys think OJ would have gotten away with it? OJ only killed 2 people and he didn't plan that far ahead.
If OJ did what Muhammad and Malvo did but as a rich celeb in CA would he have gotten off?

Even though he is "only 17" (just lke Janus Ian), Malvo can get death.
The stupidest thing they did was kill someone in Virginia - 2nd to Texas, I believe, in excecutions. And we'll kill 'em young too. This is why it was a big, big, big deal that Virginia tried them before Maryland, the District or even Georgia (I believe - one of those real Southern states), or the Feds.
Maryland does have the death penalty on the books, but I believe they had imposed a moritorium on excecutions while they examined the many different aspects of it. If they hadn't hit VA and it was just up to MD or DC, my bet is chances are neither of them would be sentenced to die.
And that doesn't even take into account that the women killed at the Home Depot worked for the FBI. If VA doesn't get him, the Feds still can.
My prediction is Malvo will escape the death penalty, however. He will get life in prison with no chance of getting out.

This is one of those times where I wish we could use "cruel and unusual punishment".

I wish they could put these two pieces of shit to death immediately instead of wasting tax-payers' money on keeping them alive during the interim.

Was this trial for all the victims or is this for just some? What I mean is, is there going to be more trials for this guy? I know they did that with the Unibomber. Just curious.

He was found guilty on 4 counts, killing that one guy (Myers i think, the guy on the lawnmower), killing more than 3 people in a year, a terrorism charge and a weapons charge. I guess they could also try him for all those other murders, but why bother, unless he some how doesnt get the death penalty...

Last night on the 11 PM nooz there was a blurb before the spots: "Final justice for John Allan Muhammad, hear what happened coming up next!" and I'm thinking what, the bailiff took him outside and shot him?
Of course, at this point the jury was still in the middle of deliberations and had retired for the night; the tease was for a piece that did nothing but assure you that the station would be RIGHT THERE today ...as the jury deliberated. Zzzzzzz.
This is the station that words everything they say in the present tense in an effort to make themselves seem more "immediate" or "latebreaking". This makes hearing about long-since-past events interesting: "Coming up on Lamebrainer News, Hitler invades Poland!"

i think Muhammad will have more trials. That's what I heard at least. They'll probably do everything in their power to get him the death penalty.

DEATH
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Reuters) - The jury in the trial of convicted Washington-area sniper John Muhammad recommended on Monday he be sentenced to death for one of 10 fatal shootings that terrorized the U.S. capital last year.
Muhammad stood impassively in front of the jury as the ruling was read out, his hands clasped in front of him. He later shook hands with his attorney, Jonathan Shapiro, before being led away.
The judge tentatively set formal sentencing for Feb. 12 to allow time for any post-trial motions.
The jury's findings came as prosecutors in the trial of his suspected accomplice, Lee Malvo, were set to wrap up their case.
Muhammad and Malvo each were charged with one murder in the series of 10 seemingly random sniper-style killings that spread fear in the Washington area in October 2002.
Muhammad, a 42-year-old Gulf War (news - web sites) veteran, was found guilty of two murder counts, conspiracy and a weapons charge on Nov. 17 in the death of Dean Meyers, a Maryland man gunned down at a gas station on Oct. 9, 2002, near Manassas, Virginia.
Attorneys for Malvo, who was 17 when the crimes were committed, plan to argue the teen-ager was brainwashed by Muhammad. He is being tried as an adult in nearby Chesapeake, Virginia, and also faces a possible death sentence.
Both trials were moved 200 miles from the Washington area to southeastern Virginia in search of unbiased juries. Members of both panels have indicated they were aware of the shootings, but said they could make up their minds based only on trial evidence.
