A few weeks ago, I got on the light rail and there sitting on the seat was an iPod. I turned it on but couldn't find any owner information so when I got to Hoboken, I turned it into the lost and found.
This morning my boyfriend asks, "Oh yeah, where's that iPod you found a while ago?" I told him I turned it into the Lost and Found. He said he would have kept it. I know how much it sucks to lose really important things. I once lost my wallet and someone found it. Still had all my cash and credit cards in it. I was so relieved that from that moment I decided I was going to try and do the right thing.
So, what would you have done?

as much as i would have liked to keep it, i probably would have turned it in, too.
i remember once, at a restaurant, i found a nice high-tech beeper in the bathroom. i turned it in. later, my mom and sister berated me for it.
although, on friday, i bought some m&m's, and there was a cookie already in the bottom of the vending machine. i took it.

Being I recently bought one and know how much they cost, and the fact that I love mine, I would have turned it in.
Though on one hand if I didn't turn it in what I would have done is contact Apple. At the time of my purchase they had me register mine. I believe at best I would have had them see if they know who owned it and see if I could get it to them. If not, I'd likely bring it to the lost and found later on.
If when I was bringing it back to the lost and found I got the sense that they pocket things though, I might keep it. Especially if it's the 20 or 30 gigabyte models. :)

There's a very tiny serial number towards the bottom of the iPod, so if you contact Apple they should know who it belongs to.

not sure if growing up in Jersey City had any affect on me but i seem to trust noone when it comes to situations like this. my thoughts are 'i will be giving it to someone else who will keep it for themselves' A wallet is different cause you can usualy mail it back to the owner. but if there is a middleman or lady then i'd keep it.
that is why i don't send money to any charities, i'm always thinking somebody is getting their pocket lined. i'd rather give money directly to a homeless person.

they pocket things
I know, that's always a possibility. I hope they did the right thing. And thanks for all the serial number/apple info. Next time I find one, I'll follow up that way! :)

I get it, but you can always ask what percentage per dollar a charity gives toward the actual cause, as opposed to overhead (rent, utilities, staff). I tend not to give cash to the homeless. I will go into a deli and by them food instead. That way I know my five bucks isn't going towards alcohol or drugs.

I usually give job applications to the homeless. All wait, I am sorry that was a terrible thing to say. I realize that most homeless people have psychological problems, and substance abuse problems or both.

or how about when you see an item 'hanging' from a previous selector who wound up with no candy or cookies. sometimes i'll select the same item hoping i'll get two of them and if i do get two i'll usualy give one away. or i'll shake the heck out of the machine, about 80% of the time the item will drop.
and sometimes if there is something right above the item that's hanging 'that i like' i'll select it and hope it knocks the 'hanging item' down as well, that's successful maybe 40% of the time...

last year my friend Liz and I were leaving the gym at my school when she looked down and found an unattended iPod. We looked as well and couldnt find any owner information so she asked me what she should do. I told her to take it, those things are expensive and if youre so careless as to just leave one of them lying around you shouldnt have one anyway, but she decided to be all moral and she turned it into the lost and found. Thats good and all, but I would have kept it.

This makes it interesting. We now need to factor in situational ethics.
What would be on the average college student's iPod? Class schedule? Little black book? If the kid comes from a privileged back ground is it ok to keep the iPod? What if the kid is working his way through school, has to juggle a job and school? Perhaps he/she has kids?
People are fallable. We tend to take things for granted. We misplace things.

once in awhile they'll have a news program on TV that shows how much stuff gets left or lost at airports, it fills a whole warehouse. It seemed like there were alot of expensive and nice items. Makes you wonder why people stopped pursuing looking for them!
i went to a Viking-Giant game and brought a 500.00 camera. Got there early and took pictures of the players. Got out to the street after the game and said "OH SHIT! Left My Camera"
Ran all the way back, up the stairs to the upper mezzanine and it was gone. Not only did the Vikings lose but now the camera, i got a little 'sick to my stomach' mentally.
LUCKILY! they were my Uncle's seats and the guy sitting next to us knows my Uncle and he took it home. got it back a few weeks later.
does anyone want naked pictures of my uncle's friend? cheap...

I'm a greedy fuck too, but that's exactly my reason for turning it in. Why I think Karma works is beyond me, but I've lost some stuff and have been pretty frigging lucky, and I'd hope some of that luck was from that. Even if it's not...

There's no way I would return an iPod.
Although they're not as expensive, I've lost a pair of CD players and they were never returned to me.
I'd just be evening things out in the world.

Would have kept it, straight up. NO fucking around. It was meant to be. If that makes me a scumbag, fuck off.
I would turn in a lot of things, but I'm a jerk off for electronics sometimes.

Instead of losing it, imagine the guy broke it...does he get it fixed or get a new one...
He get's a new one!
So, I keep it...no big deal...he's not thinking twice and getting a new one anyway...it's a win-win for everyone!

I don't think I would trust the lost and found. I would have kept it, but then posted signs at the train station, saying I found it and to give me a call. If they could identify it as theirs, they would get it back.
