View Full Version : Flashing Your Headlights

My boyfriend was driving me home around 2 am the other night. We got to a red light, and he started flashing his headlights at it repeatedly. When I asked him what the "hell" he was doing, he told me that flashing your headlights at a traffic light will make it change green. He said that it "tricks it" into thinking that it is an emergency vehicle. I thought that was total bullshit, and he placed a bet with me saying that he was correct. I didn't think it was true because I have seen plenty of emergency vehicles going through red lights when their lights were flashing. So anyone know the truth behind this scenario?

I am so disappointed in the subject matter of this thread. You tricked us on this one shock poster!

On topic:
I doubt it works though. I just flash my lights to let people know that the 5-0 is behind me.

I see how flashing one's headlights is shocking. It's almost as shocking as fucking your uncle!

This is what my friend had to say:
NetwEngn: It is true, but it only works with certain lights... Not all lights... It is a sensor that they use... It is at the light by 112 and 347... That is one that I know of...

I still think it's bullshit.

some Emergency vehicles have a gizmo to change the light; a lot just drive thru the red ones - it's BS.

btw what was the bet for :-)

Myth. Although not used in NYC, a device does exist that can change a light, but it has to be planted in the traffic light box, and you have to have the "remote". As for fooling it, If your boyfriend can change the channels on his tivo by flashing his lights in the driveway, then maybe he can change a traffic light...otherwise..no.

ever heard of an urban legend? this is certainly one of them. Lights have sensors, but flashing your headlights at them doesn't necessarily activate them.

1) What Chris said. You can purchase a device over the internet that sends the signal, but I usually see emergency vehicles run red in NY, so I doubt any part of NY uses them. (Chris can correct em if I'm wrong about all of NY)

2) Michael Jackson attempted to sue to have the scene removed from the movie.

3) Shut your fucking face uncle fucker. You're a boner biting bastard, uncle fucker. You don't eat or sleep or mow the lawn, you just fuck you uncle all day long.

never heard of it, i know they have sensors in the street near the light and the weight of a car can activate a timer? and the light will change sooner than normal...

make sure if there is a 'left turn signal' on the light and it is late at night that you are sitting on one of these sensors in the street otherwise it will bypass the left turn signal and just go from red to green.

and how about them buttons on the poles that give you the impression they will cause an almost immediate change so you can walk... i personally think you wait longer or it psychologicaly makes you feel like your waiting longer cause your after you push it then you are 'really' watching for the light to change...

Like Chris said...and, to my knowledge, the only way you know if the light in question has one of those sensors is if you have a radar detector & it goes apeshit as you approach the light.

There is one at the end of the exit ramp at exit 150 in Nutley, my radar detector goes so nuts that I have to unplug it. I think there's also one at the corner of Greylock & Passaic Ave.'s in Belleville/Nutley where it does the same.

They are, but there are conditions that can cause it to change based on time of day, traffic, etc.

I am and EE, and have worked on circuit design for NJ Transit. There is a device in traffic lights that can be controlled by a garage opener like device. It emits a signal that changes the light. You can build one for aout 200 dollars with off the shelf parts.

They already do that. They're called proximity detectors, and they determine when cars are sitting on top of them. They work based on induction. Sometimes you can see where they were embedded in the road, especially if the light was retrofitted. Look for a patched-over hole in the pavement directly underneath where the first car would pull up at a stop light.

oh and the flashing thing is so fast that it is basically impossible to flash your beams that fast, and the newer versions are infrared, so it doesnt matter.

This was written by a traffic engineer on a website:
Flashing your headlights (or a strobe) at a junction in the UK will just annoy other drivers - traffic lights DON'T look for flashing lights! "Hurry Calls" (Police, Fire, Ambulance, Buses) are activated with either 418 MHz licence-free transmitters on the vehicles (you can receive this signal, emulate it, and build your own encoder) or with "Sietag" units on the vehicles. The "Sietag"s are transponder units, and aren't easy to hack....

The "camera" on top of the signal pole ISN'T a camera! It's an MVD (Microwave Vehicle Detector), which just looks at moving targets (you can change the lights if you run at one!). It's based on the same doppler technology that's used to open shop doors!

If you put "non-valid" data into a UTC controlled site (and these sites are a MINORITY), the controller will fall back to "CLF" mode ("cableless linking facility"), which will allow the site to run autonomously, whilst still trying to keep up with the flow......

Hacking the UTC is probably a pointless exercise!

well, this is all very simple.
Kat, did the lights change when your boyfriend flashed his lights?

Katylina

The light I am talking about is one that makes you stop for the red arrow (like a stop sign) and then turns green as soon as you stop. The data, therefore, was inconclusive. There are so many variables for taking data on whether the light changes or not anyway, like different timers on each traffic light, how long you are sitting before you start blinking the headlights, and where do you start blinking. To get true accurate data we would have to have a controlled environment, which is very difficult to do.

But anyway, I am right. I win. So there.
