Tomorrow night, I'm packing the cats up and driving about an hour and a half to spend Thanksgiving with my boyfriend. Alice and Lloyd are fine, but Otis is AWFUL in the car. He cries the entire time (sometimes getting Alice and Lloyd, who are usually quiet, to chime in) and always poops and pees himself (he never makes it passed Redbank, NJ; about the half-way point). I actually bought wee-wee pads and lined the bottom of the cat carrier. I'll still have to give him a bath once I'm there.

Anyway, anyone have any advice to calm him down? I put him in the back of my stationwagon and turn the tunes up to drown him out. I feel so bad for him, but he SO loves being at skid's house once he gets there (and we love having him there, too). I don't want to leave him home by himself b/c he'll miss Alice and Lloyd.

So, yeah, any advice would be appreciated.

I've found that tranquilizers work well.

For me, not the cat. I'll even join in on the yowling once it's not like an icepick in the base of my skull any more.

As to them pissing and shitting, take their food and water away about six hours before setting out.

Good luck!

that's really the best advice at this point... other than that, for the future, you can practice with Otis going for short rides (like around the block) in the car and giving him lots of treats (that tuna that comes in the salable pouches is good because it's tuna but without all the messiness of water from the can) to get him more used to it for future trips. But he will probably always soil himself and yowl a lot, unofrtunately.

No, Billy is clean and sober and plans to stay that way.

Thanks TooCute and Late2Party!

They're on a food fast starting now. They can spare it! The water fast starts at 9am. I'm going to tell skid to have the fud and water ready for them.

i've been pretty lucky when i've had to travel with pets. when i would come home for breaks from college, i'd set my litterbox in the back seat (i didnt have a carrier) and Joeba would make a poopie within the first 15 minutes of the drive, and then sit on my my lap for the rest of the 3 hour ride home.
my cats now dont make poopies when i have to travel with them. one of them throws up and breaks her nails on the carrier door, but otherwise, they'll just meow. as long as i keep talking or sing to them, they're ok.

I'm reading "wee wee pads" and "poopies".

What is it about cats that de-evolve the english language?

when i brought my cats down to jersey (2 hour ride) i had to take them to the vet first for shots. the vet gave them some sort of harmless narcotic shot that drugged them for a few hours... they seemed to enjoy it and were fine the next day... if it weren't for that i would have had to hear the howling for 2 hours. my cats are awful in the car. the vet said that you can call up and get the shot, or you can try this product called "feliway". It mimicks some sort of cat phermone that makes them happy (apparently its the same phermone cats leave on things when they rub their faces against something)

So we made it. Otis yowled, but at least he made it to the Asbury Park tolls before he pee'd himself. That's a record! We only bathed the parts that were soiled.

I'm so glad he didn't poo. It's a start.

The first 45 minutes of the drive sucked monkey balls. As far as I was concerned, skidmark could have the lot of them until Christmas!

But they like it here. Otis is his usual handsome, big pile of dumb. (http://www.poster.net/reeves-keanu/reeves-keanu-keanu-reeves-celebrity-calendar-2002-5600012.jpg) Alice is, as usual, pushy and bitchy. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38394000/jpg/_38394175_courtneylove150.jpg) And, as usual, Lloyd is just a creep. (http://krisb.free.fr/lettre%20K/image%20K/kalifornia.jpg)

This is my menagerie.

buy a pitbull and starve it for a few days, then lock all of them in a small room.

but tranq's will work also. tell your vet the different circumstances of each cat and i'm sure they'll be able to keep each one comfortable for the ride.

[quote]man! them cats have a striking resemblance to some movie stars...

Fuzzy..He's right!

Those aren't cats!! I think you just drove some former cast members from '90210' to Skidmark's place. ( I'm glad Shannen Doherty didn't go 'pee-pee until the toll booths, though. I'll bet she picks a fight over dinner, too )

I'll be interested to know if you gave him any sedatives for the journey ( like Missy suggested ). I once gave some to my cat, Gavin, and she passed out. It was the tiniest amount, but she got sooo sick from it, I didn't go anywhere, except BACK to the Vet, again. She had to be pumped full of cortisone. What an ordeal.
Anyway, When Gavin came to, she spent about an hour pacing, and mumbling ( I shouldn't be laughing at this memory - it was horrible, but seems funnier now ) It was scary - I felt like I had to "Talk her down" from a bad acid trip or whatever.
Seriously, she had a bad reaction to the stuff, so I have to deal with her yowling, and the same stuff too.
Aww, poor Gavin the Cat.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Yes, my female cat is named Gavin ( named after Bruce McCulloch's character from KITH ).

...No sig, yet... Sigh.

Made it to AP? Good to hear. So I guess I won't see you cleaning your car on the side of the road as I go home.

Maybe you should keep the problem kitty on the passenger seat so he can see you and not be so scared. Also, you can pet him through his cage which might calm him.
