"I think people were misled and I think people are fighting a war that they didn't know they were going to be fighting," Maines said Friday on NBC's "Today" show. "And I think they were misled by people who should have been asking questions and weren't."

"the fat Dixie Chick".

What?! She's fat? I guess I missed that wymyn's news letter.

I'm not supporting or condoning her words, but how come whenever a woman makes a socio-political or perhaps intellectual statement, her body gets attacked?

I can take a joke and all. You all know that. But why does a woman's personal political opinion suddenly render an attack on her appearance?

That's just so reactionary, antquated, and plain back asswards.

Did anyone besides me actually see the interview? She said one sentence about politics in the whole 10 minute interview, yet that's what everyone catches onto.

Its one of the complexities of being famous that everything you say, every side comment, every bit of between song banter, can end up as front page news. In a sense, you have to censor yourself: you are never free to speak your mind, because it will always be taken out of context.

It's not like this came out of nowhere, she was asked a question and she answered.

Exactly. This is the real world, she's not posting her thoughts anonymously on a message board. This is something politicians learn very quickly.

She knew this is a "third rail" subject yet she's still trying to prove she was right. She, and others like Jeanne Garafalo, have to decide if they're politicans or entertainers. People like Al Franken have made the jump permanently into politics, but his "comedy" career was already over.

Somebody needs to sit Natalie down and explain to her that she has to politely brush this subject aside whenever it comes up. Otherwise, everytime she's interviewed, some sweet-faced innocent looking interviewer is going to play gottcha and nail her.

You may have been lied to, but it certainly wasn't by the President.

We went to war with Iraq supposedly because they had WMD and terrorist ties with al-Qaeda. That's how it supposedly fit into the war on terror. None of that has proved to be true, and the war on terror is now more difficult. That's about as nutshell as I can get it. It's my opinion, and I trust it. I don't have any expectations of convincing anyone else of it, so I'll leave it at that. If you know something I don't I'd be glad to hear it.

Ultimately there really is no reason to brush it off. You may look at this as bad publicity somehow, but I think it's just neutral publicity. This isn't 1915, she's not gonna be thrown in prison.

I'm not sure I know something you don't, I'm just not going to immediately jump to the conclusion that people are lying. I think it's far more likely that IF these weapons are never found (and after just a few months of looking, I'm not ready to say that's a definite) that either a) they were destroyed at some point, or b) the intel was simply wrong. Would mistaken intelligence be a problem? Yes. Would it be a conspiracy of deception? Certainly not.

Remember, the US govt. and the UN both have been working under the assumption that these weapons indeed existed long before the Bush administration took power.

Ah, yes, of course, that's exactly what I said and / or meant.

Fucking dimwit.

It's his set-in-stone conviction that I find amusing.

None of us REALLY know what the hell went on - whether the intel was just godawful (and judging the state of our intelligence services, that's entirely possible), whether we were blatantly lied to, whether it was a lie of omission, action taken in honest good faith......none of us know for sure what the deal is. Doesn't mean we shouldn't question....

....but it's no surprise that he - and Ms. Maines here - jump to the most negative conclusion possible, because.....well, we know why.

I'll give him credit, though - at least he didn't cop the same bullshit argument high fly used the other day about how we've wasted the "cream of our youth."
