up-grading a playstation 2

with enough programming/ eletronics knowledge, could someone modify a ps2 counsol with a better video card and/ or hard drive? it seems possible, if the mb is compatable.

had one originally, and sold it b/c there were no good games. superior graphics, but it took them this long to get gta. but that's what i'm basing my theory on- xbox is essentially a mini pc.

Seriously, there's a limited amount you can do to upgrade any console because of the use of proprietary parts. The xbox is slightly more upgradable (you can hack in a bigger hard drive and better cd-rom), but essentially, the most you can do is mod it to allow it to do a few things that the designers didn't plan on.

I modded my PS1 to play "ahem" backups.

I didn't want to do the same to my PS2 because I was afraid to break it.

not nessicarrily true jon, you forgot that Sony released a kit for the PS2 that can be used to upgrade it with.

THE PS2 LINUX KIT

you can get it from sony, if you do use it, you have to program it yourself and you get a hard drive, after you do all that shit you can put in a new DVD-Rom Drive and possibly upgrade the video card.

WARNING: PS2's are very difficult to mod in general, they require procise small solders and one little extra thing of solder will fry your motherboard

I don't like doing permanent mods to my hardware.

Dreamcast was nice because you could bypass the copyprotections with a loader disc. no button tricks or anything like that.

For my PS1, I had a Pro Action Replay that plugged into the back to play imports, backups and Thrill Kill.

There are usb "mod chips" that you can just plug in to bypass the copy protection.



And Todd, I didn't think he was looking to run linux on his console. Only hardcore linux geeks really care about doing it and they do it on every console.

Sure it takes a couple of years for XBOX to get a game. But when they do come out the game is 100X better! Graphics and memory! I don't even own a memory card.

And SatCam, the only notable X-Box exclusives that aren't on PC that I can think of are the DOA Volleyball game, the first Buffy game, and Star Wars: Obi-Wan.

What memory expansion? The harddrive comes out in early spring with FFXI, but that's a disk, not memory.
