View Full Version : Dealing with a neighborhood dog

My neighbor across the street is a borderline redneck, I really can't read him yet. He's got a spaniel who he lets run free all over the neighborhood, the only dog in the neighborhood to do so. This dog is constantly on my property, yesterday my wife told me that this dog was in our backyard. I know that it is using my yard for a toilet and that is really getting me furious. So much so that I can't go to sleep right now because my mind is racing with hatred, not for the dog, but for the owner. We maintain a civil relationship, wave hello and such, but there is a leash law in this town.
Also, this dope told me when we moved in that I shouldn't pet near the dog's back legs because she has been hit by cars 3 times (obviously because he lets her run around loose all the time) and is prone to snap because that hurts her. I have a 2 yr old daughter that I'm afraid to let around her. God help the dog if she did snap at my kid because I would kill it on the spot with whatever was handy.

My question is what do I do? Do I politely tell the guy to keep his dog off my lawn? Do I call animal control to tell them what is happening and have them come? It's awkward because I have only been in the house for 2 months and I don't want to start an enemy relationship with the guy who lives right across the street.

Any thoughts?

The passive thing to do would be to fence in your yard.

But the best thing to do is go tell the guy to chain his fucking mut before you eat it.

I'm leaning more to the picking up the dogshit with a shovel and leaving it in his mailbox.

I want to confront him with it. And if it happens again, then call the town animal control with a complaint. Thoughts?

Out of courtesy (just because he's a dope doesn't mean you have to be one too) I would talk to him first and say whatever you feel like saying, whether it's that you're concerned for his dog, and you hope that he keeps it secure for its sake, or your concerned for your child and you hope he keeps his dog secure for HIS sake so that you don't have to sue his ass at some point in the future. Personally I would just say that you're worried for the dog.

However you phrase it, the point should be that he understands that the next time you see the dog loose, you will be calling animal control. It's sounds unlikely that he is going to stop letting his dog run free.

Next time it does, do it.

I don't know what the exact laws are, but assuming they come and get the dog, he's almost definitely going to get it back. At some point if it continues to happen, he's going to have to pay a fine. Given that he seems to care so little about the dog, at some point he's going to either keep it secure or he's not going to pay the fine and the dog is going to get taken away. Hopefully it won't be put down if that happens, but it's a possibility. If you're concerned about what will happen to the dog after you call animal control, just call them and ask beforehand what the laws/their policies etc. are.

Sucky dog owners really suck.

That's not even remotely funny. Punishing a dog because of the stupidity of an owner is not an answer. And I don't find the thought of it amusing in the slightest.

there you go james. and here's a simple truth- everyone in your neighborhood hates this family, whether they say so or not, and taking a stand with this guy will make you a hero/ sacrifical lamb. somebody has to be the dick and bear the grudge of this individual.

dogs are a lot of responsibility and anyone incapable of keeping a dog in line has no hope of rearing a child. if he has kids, lock your car doors at all times- watch out for the car shoppers.

Sucky dog owners really suck.

Amen to that. The dog is not a bad dog. If it was a nasty fuck that was dangerous I could justify throwing a rock at its head.

I'm going to go with the "your dog was in my backyard again and I'm concerned for my 2 year old, I'd appreciate it if you'd keep her off my lawn."

Then the next time I see it cross the street unattended, I'm calling animal control.

Its illegal to let a dog run free. Ive been bit by a dog or 2 and I know for a fact that the owner is liable if that happened. If you speak to him about it and he doesnt restrain the dog, its your duity to call the cops on him. If it bites your kid or another kid or the mailman, youll be doing them all a favor by preventative action. I suspect it will cause some difficulty between you and him, but what are your real options? Would he say something to you if you had a loose animal on his property? I bet he would. Either that or lure him into your car in the dead of night and take him for a loooooooong ride up in the mountians and just open the door and let him explore while you drive home.

James? Your first instinct was correct....at least in my opinion.
You should politely go up to him sometime soon and ask him not to let his dog use your backyard as a port-a-john.
If he refuses then you have the right to snap the dogs head right off of it's neck. (of corse I am kidding....calm down Too Cute)
Well either that or fill a water pistol with pure ammonia and when you see the dog dumping in your yard hit him in the nose with it...he will run away yelping at the top of it's lungs. It will do no perminant harm to the dog what-so-ever and it will also learn to keep out of your yard.

Heres an interesting matter for debate; Lets say you ask him to restrain the dog and he says he will, but doesnt. So you call the cops and they ticket him and it clears things up for a while. But the dog soon returns to your yard. Say your daughter is scared of him, and youve seen him snap a few times. You call the cops and they come and ticket him again and it clears up for a few weeks and then you see him in the yard again.. Now, this is your yard, the law has been unhelpfull and so has the owner... You have an obligation to provide your children with a safe home... this neighbor is preventing that by way of his dog.. on YOUR property, a threat appears to the safety of YOUR home...
Heres the question::: is violence justified?

1 tell him you're going to call animal control then do it.
2 put the crap in a bag and dump it on his porch
3 get a super soaker and keep shooting the dog when he comes over (maybe put a teaspoon of vinegar or bleach in it as a deterrent w/o making it toxic)

although it's amusing to think about it, under no circumstances actually hurt the dog

If the dog makes a mess in your yard, it's the owner's dog duty to clean it up.

Get an electronic fence to border your house. Although I like the idea of buying a Pit Bull Terrier and let fate sort it out. (though he COULD sue you if your dog kills his dog) Call animal control anonamously and make his wallet hurt. He MAY learn. Don't make personal problems with this human unless you want to get into a pissing/shitting contest. Sometimes shit in someones mailbox can be fun, but you're the new guy there, so take it easy for a while, smile alot, and just be a passive aggressive prick like him

Wow, James. I was going to make the exact same post. My neighbor lets his dog run lose. He likes to come over to MY HOUSE and greet us (even try to get it). Well, he also like to leave us little presents in our yard. I found three (3) on the same day. This guy isnt that bad, but I want to tell him so bad to not let his dog lose, and not let him shit on my lawn.

This is probably not useful in this situation, but...

I used to walk to work when work and home were comfortably nearby. There was a dog who would 'defend' his territory by coming out and barking and growling at me, and feigning nipping me - never got close - as I walked by, on a public road.

I grew tired of this, as the dog was trained to drive people off it seems, and was not amenable to my attempts to calm him down.

One night (I worked overnight) I saw his owner at the door of their home while said dog was trying to harrass me, and I yelled CHAIN HIM OR TRAIN HIM, MY COUSIN IS A LAWYER!!!

Never saw that fucking dog again.

I'm not spending shit on dog repellant. This guy has to keep his dog in his yard, it's the law. Besides, I'm not going to be all "oh this is so sad" when the dog gets run over by a car.

I haven't had the opportunity to speak to this neighbor about his dog and now he does something unexpected...he used his snowplow to dig my driveway out without asking! It was an incredibly nice thing to do since there is about 10 inches of snow on it. Now what? This buys him at least a month of grace.

At least the deep snow should keep his dog off the lawn for a while.

It's never easy.

Your neighbor seems like a nice guy. Speak to him about it, but really nicely. Tell him you've heard that someone else is going to report him to animal control, don't be specific, just point down the street. Let him know that the fines are really expensive and for his protection, he should probably keep the dog tied up. Or perhaps you could tell him you've heard the police in the town are cracking down on loose dogs.

Just remember to be nice to this neighbor or else you might find your driveway plowed full of snow after you've just cleaned it.
