I like Bush in some ways and others I don't. This trip, though, makes me nervous. I'm sure the troops that were there got a huge boost out of it and we should do what ever we can for them, but this is dangerous. He landed in the same airport where they hit the DHL cargo plane the other day with an RPG. Like Bush or not, if his plane had been shot down over there, and he was killed, this country would be thrown into even more chaos. President Cheney? That doesn't sound good.

Newport, the estimated output of a fully running Iraq oil industry is approx. 15 billion dollars. Given that we've already far, FAR exceeded that, I think it's safe to say this war is very obviously NOT about oil.

And wadd's right. I'd kill for $1.40 gas. Leave it to the 15-year-old to make adorable assumptions about what "expensive" heights gas may cost.

I still think this was at least a semi-classy move on Bush's part. It's no doubt great for the troops' morale, and that's something they need. It wasn't an awful showboat affair like the carrier landing, and I applaud that. Of course he's trying to drum up support. What president wouldn't?

I agree with the point made by Doomstone. What was that point again???

The Democratic candidates really can't touch him on this. Our mission in the first place is to secure Iraq, so they can't complain about the cost of securing the President on this trip. Second, he gave a real shot in the arm to fatigued soldiers. Third, this trip also gave the President the opportunity to sit down and meet the Iraqi Governing Council. If you can't find any of those reasons suitable enough to support this visit, then I really have pity on you and any candidate that tries to attack Bush on this. Bravo, Bush.

I think this was a great thing to do, and he planned it himself so you know it was at least a little sincere, he was planning it since october.

What a shot of morale boost that was to all our troops and families. A truly classy move. Say what you want about this being a self-serving photo-op, but it sure was a fantastic morale boost for the troops.

Now, on a lighter note, I'd like to see George W. parachute into the center of Baghdad in a Santa suit on Christmas day while bearing gifts for Iraqi children..........a sure fire way to give heart attacks and strokes to the Dean's and Kennedy's of the democratic party !!

This was very nice of Bush to do, but i can't help but wonder how much of it was to steal Sen. Clinton's thunder of spending Thanksgiving in Afghanistan and the day after in Iraq. it's seems like a case of "oh, you're going? well I'm going first, on a super secret mission: 'Operation Turkey Drop'."

Then again, does it really matter? I give my respect to the both of them.

No it should not. I hate that whore but I give her props for going. However if you want to play partisan politics, Bush did it in a warzone not for publicity. Hillary did it more as a photop considering everyone knew she was going.

Like I said though both deserve credit for going.

Yes this was a shot of morale to the troops over there, however a cynic could poke holes in it by pointing out that it was done as a photo-op to replace the disaster that was the photo-op from May 1st on the aircraft carier - you can just smell the PR and marketing machine from The Project for the New American Century (http://www.newamericancentury.org/) behind it. You just know these will show up in the campaign ads with the unspoken message that if you are against George W. Bush you are for the terrorists.

"If Al Gore was President..." is as useless an exercise as asking "if Kennedy wasn't shot."

However, I am nothing if not useless, so I would guess that after 9/11 Gore would have had more pressure to go into Afghanistan on a faster time table than Bush did - his feet would have been held more to the fire by the Republicans in congress over this, because many believe that Clinton was to blame. Gore is not a puss, though, as his votiing record in the Senate shows. However, since Gore would not have been surrounded by Rummy, Conni or Wolfy, so I am sure we would not have gone into Iraq, however there might have been pressure to bring back inspectors, and continue to contain "Saddam."

Gas was one issue to go into Iraq, as was payback for one of our bitches biting our hand and getting away with it 12 years ago. And even if our motives were pure and altruistic, the rest of the world will never see it that way. (http://www.robert-fisk.com/iraqwarvictims_mar2003.htm)

(By the way - $1.40 a gallon is a BARGAIN compared to the rest of the world!!!)

And, I'm afraid, that Bush's visit will strengthen not only the resolve of our boys, but will also inspire anger in the enemy, who seem to have an endless cache of people ready to take on "the occupiers."

I would agree that this will be used as good p.r. for Bush - if not by the administration in the bid for reelection, than certainly by the Republican National Party.

BUT, I don't really see a problem with that, because, fair is fair - if the Democrat candidates wish to make a name for themselves by putting forth a platform of opposition to the war, than Bush has every right to respond with a platform supporting the war. They need to watch the "if you're not with us, you're for the terrorists!" rhetoric that crops up (and despite what you might think, the administration isn't the driving force behind that, it's more the hard-line Repubs in the party).

I do NOT believe, however, that this was done specifically for a photo-op - that's a fortuitous by-product - but rather to genuinely boost morale and reaffirm that the administration supports our troops as well as Iraq.

I don't see the ballsiness in it.

I also don't really think one can criticize the p.r. angle.
It's a good thing for the President to show support that way, and besides, this sort of thing is what politicians do.
As long as they're not bullshitting us like the "Mission Accomplished" fiasco, I say "bravo!"

So in the middle of a warzone, with Bush being public enemy number 1, to fly into an airport where there was just a surface to air missile that hit a dhl cargo plane days earlier shows no ball huh. And he is the 1st president ever in Iraq. Yes that takes lots of balls. If they knew he was there, you can bet your life they would have tried to blow up the plane or assassinate him.

It doesn't take balls to be the first president in Iraq.

Yesterday's Washington Post had a nice article on the local security measures taken, as well as the ECM equipment on Air Force One that led all the experts quoted to hold the opinion that there was very, very little risk.
This wasn't Nimitz visiting Guadalcanal, circa September 1942.

If the man really cared, he would stand with those soldiers on the street and experience the fear and confusion that comes with the situation. I have no love for any leader that lives like a king while sending peasants to fight his battles.

I don't believe that he doesn't care, but he did get zero sense of what it was like actually in Iraq - hell, there's a Burger King now opperating on that base I'm guessing it was safer at that airport during those 2 hours than it's been during the entire war.

At the very least (and more realistically) he should attend some of the funerals and visit some of the grieving family members, or even some of the thousands of soldiers who have been wounded.

As far as visiting the families and the funerals, Bush is doing about what he should.

We can't set a precedent where the president is at every funeral for every service member we lose, and he shouldn't play favorites by going to just some of them.

The Dubster has made 4 trips to visit the wounded.

I wish he'd reverse his administration's decision to have guys pretending to play "Taps" with fake bugles that have a recording inside them that "sounds just like the real thing".

Our veterans deserve better.

What did I criticize?

Nothing.

You are semantically splitting hairs so finely that not even atoms could pass through.

Fine, then: replace "criticize" with the words "mock even though everyone who doesn't have a totally irrational hatred of all things Republicand and/or conservative agrees it was a good move". That should correct the problem.

So, what is it like to be wrong about everything?

Oh, TAG.

Ow.

My pride.

Well, kings and military leaders used to spend a lot of time out on the front lines with their men. The result? A lot of dead leaders. Hell, in WWI alone the number of officer casualties compared to that of ordinarily soldiers was staggeringly high.

I also would take issue with you equating the U.S. military, arguably the finest group of professionals on the planet, with mere "peasants", but that's really an argument for another day.

Well, in terms of relative socio-economic comparisons, it's pretty accurate. Peasants could whup some ass, too...

It's not an issue of being neutral.

I'm clearly lefty-loosey-liberal, but some stuff is very obvious.

Regardless of what changes should or could be made, Bush won the 2000 election fair and square.

The war is not about oil. Peak production of Iraq's oil industry would produce about $15 billion a year. We're already spending over $150 billion in Iraq and Afghanistan now. Talk about a literal drop in the bucket...

Christ, you're like some sort of stalker. On one hand, you repeatedly call me a troll, yet on the other, you feel the need to post asinine illogical responses to nearly every comment I make here. Let me walk you through this, so I can make perfectly clear once and for all how wrong you are here so maybe you'll shut the hell up.

Your comment:

I want to congratulate you.

With your participation in this thread, you have officially become the liberal equivalent of Rush & the "megadittos" during the Clinton era - criticizing the President for every move that he makes, whether it's the right move or not.

was in response to my comment:

MMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEGADITTOS, RUSH!!!!!!!!!!! (Now I understand, it's easier than thinking)

which was in response to NewYorkDittohead80's question:

I agree with the point made by Doomstone. What was that point again???

which was in response to my comment:

MEGADITTOS!!!!!!!!!

which was in response to the two Limbaugh-esque comments that directly preceded that post, one by Tall_James:

Now watch the 9 dwarves call it a political move for the upcoming election.

and the other by DittoMetalMoe:

Yea. You act like people care what those freaks have to say.

Now, obviously these two comments show a complete lack of any sort of insight and serve no purpose other than an attempt to discredit the opposition to Dubya, hence my appropriate sarcastic response to such worthless and shameful groupspeak.

So the fact that you took what I said, first as a "criticism" and then, after backpeddling, as "mocking" the president, even though my comments were directed at fellow posters here and not at Chimp Boy, shows that you are a) clearly in the wrong, b) incredibly and irrationally defensive of your flight-suit clad hero, and c) gay.

No, my only comment related to Photo Op 2: Electric Boogaloo, was my first post in this thread, in which I asked the question:

Did he wear his flight suit?

Now if this offended you, you are way too sensitive for your own good. Just because I didn't get on my knees and verbally suck Dubya's dick for Operation: Turkey like everyone else here, you seem to think that shows "a totally irrational hatred of all things Republicand and/or conservative". You jump to conclusions that are false (I don't hate all things Republican. For example, I have nothing but respect for men like John McCain), and you make yourself look like an ass in the process. Your knee-jerk overraction to anything that can even remotely be construed as an attack on your partisan brethren displays insecurity and paranoia.

You truly are a sorry, sad little man.
