My best friend of 18 years just told me her Doctors think there is a chance that she might have Polycystic Ovaries.

I really don't know what to do/or say to her at this time because she's still waiting for a full examination. I'm trying to be as positive as i possibly can but the thought of her having it is scaring me alot. I really don't even know what polycystic ovaries is or how it happens. She was anorexic for a long time, could this be a result of that?

GrlNin,

Again, with the Caveat that I am no MD and don;t take anything anyone on this boards has to offer as gospel; I did Heart Ultrasounds for a while; meaning I worked next to the Pelvic Ultrasound People.

Let me say this; a cyst on a women's ovary in industrialized nations seems to be becoming the rule, not the exception. A cyst is a cyst; fluid pooled in a 'capsule'. Polycystic Cysts = more then one, and will show up 'brighter' on an Ultrasound, because they are denser, a bit more then just fluid.

Why this explosion in ovarian cysts? No one knows; but it also may be a simple consequence of how good the Ultrasounds are getting; we're detecting stuff at the sub-millimeter range now, and 3D scans and other advances = more detections.

For most of these women; they would have never known they were there if they hadn't been examined. Again, that's the odds; your friends case? I have no idea.
