Would you want to move our prized possession Jose Reyes from his natural position, shortstop for a Japanese equivalent to what many industry sources have dubbed Nomar Garciaparra? Wouldn't that be WICKED awesome?

I don't know yet if it does come true. I would rather move Matsui but if he is as good as everyone and their mother and that includes Bobby Valentine I might change my mind. Since Castillo decided against the Mets I think we should try this out (if it does become a reality).

So where do you peeps stand on this one?

I think it is the only way the Mets can upgrade 2 positions at the same time. I reminds me of when they moved Edgardo to second from third to make way for Ventura. When Ventura left, he went back to third.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Yeah man, I'd take him in a minute, but why move Reyes to 2nd ?? I say move Reyes to third and move Wiggington back to his original position, which is second. With Reyes' arm, he could throw out runners from anywhere at the hot corner ( including the outfield grass ).

Infield defense was the key for the Mets when the went to the World Series in 2000, so getting Matsui would help greatly.

I remember the best infield in baseball history... Olerud, Alfonzo, Ordonez and Ventura, that was fun.

I would like that a heck of a lot better.

And Wilpon... don't bring in Vina... we need the youth!

I think it would be interesting to see a technically sound player like Matsui at Shea. Maybe some of his habits will wear off on others (please). However, I thought Reyes was the player of the future, the Mets starting Shortstop for the next 15 years. What do you think the chances are he'll walk when his contract is up. Does anybody think the Mets would do better trying to get an outfield bat or pitcher than mess with their best prospect/young player by signing a guy they don't necessarily need?

Well he is pretty much signed according to WFAN earlier today. Hope for the best all my fellow
Met fans.

This should get really interesting.

Well they say he has a great glove and Reyes is only 20 and athletic enough to learn and play 2nd. They said the Mets have also offered Mike Cameron a contract. They would have one of the strongest defenses up the middle when Wilson is behind the plate. Ichiro also said that Matsui is faster then him, so Reyes and him at the top of the lineup would be great to watch.

I sure want Cameron. Then maybe Vlad I hope... but more likely Reggie Sanders, ugh!

Yeah Vlad would be great. But if they are not going to break the bank then I like the plan of building through defense, especially at Shea. But Reggie Sanders doesn't fit into the "get younger" part of the plan. But he is better then Cedano.

If "little" Matsui is all that they say, then fine. But moving Reyes is kinda screwy, after all the hype around him, only to be moved to second. I too wouldn't be surprised if he left after his contract's up. I'd be pretty pissed is I were to told I was the "next big shortstop" and then be told "Well, maybe not. Let's try ya at second"
And why are they taking a year and a day to sign anyone else? They have the biggest pockets in MLB (second only to the Yanks of course) but yet they are doing nothing! I was pissed when they didn't get A-Rod the first time, and they're passing on him AGAIN! He wanted to come here the first time, so he could hang with his friend Jeter. Granted, I don't think he'd come over this time, after being snubbed, but at least try!
And why are they not going after Sheffield? The Yanks really don't need him, but George has to have the "big guns".
Richie Sexon and Derrek Lee are other guys the Mets could have gone after! Not much goin' on at first these days. But they'll give fat boy Vaughn another shot! UGH!
We could use another pitcher, and since Millwood may be leaving Philly.....
Also, even though I'm not a Yankee fan (but a fan of the game in general), I was shocked that they got rid of Nick Johnson. If Giambi gets hurt again, they're screwed (heh heh). And I'd laugh if the Astros get Andy Pettitte.

The Mets are going to continue to be a mediocre team until Fred Wilpon and his sons are locked away. If Steinbrenner owned this team, ARod would be playing short and there'd be a better option for the outfield than Reggie Sanders. I think Kaz could be successful here, but shortstop was the one position that was actually reliable last season. And who's going to pitch? We are years away from being good again.

True. I think pitching is the answer. But we don't have anyone right now to trade to get good pitching and as far as free agents go Kevin Millwood would be nice if his price came down a little and Colon is good but his weight worries me. He was barely in shape in a year when he was going to be a free agent. What happens when you give him a 3 year contract?

How funny must those meetings be:

Mets' GM: So how about your # 2 Starter?

Other team's GM: Who can you trade for him?

Mets' GM: We got Cedeno...

See, we don't need a #2 starter we need a #1.

See, that's the problem. The Mets do have a lot of money, but who would choose them over the Yankees. Who would choose any team over the Yankees???

How is this for the justice league of loser teams... Mets, NY Giants, Knicks, Rangers

In a way I'm glad the Wilpon's aren't spending away just to keep up with the Steinbrenner's. It's been proven that talent wins over big budgets. I think the Mets are heading in the right direction by hiring all these assistants/evaluators. There's plenty of low priced talent out there, and you need a solid farm system.

But they do need to open the wallet up and sign Millwood, and offer Vladamir a structured contract that rewards him for success and protects the Mets in case his back goes out. I think he'll hit 40+ homers at Shea easily, so it's worth the gamble. Wrapping up Matsui is a good start, and Reyes' decision to learn a new position is a class act and builds team spirit. Hopefully this will make Piazza open up his eyes, swallow some pride, and accept the inevitable.

Ya gotta believe !!

Guerrero will not hit 40 home runs in Shea Stadium. Think about the last Met to hit 40. Piazza, one year hit 40 on the nose. Guerrero isn't that powerful. From everything I've read, Guerrero's agents have used New York, Yankees primarily but also Mets to drive up his price. From what I understand, he can't stand the pressure, and him and his agents know it. On the other hand, according to the Mets Site, Matsui is a done deal:

Wilpon is dead set against bringing in long contracts or players with an injury history right now. I can't say I blame him. Phillips gambled a few times on such players and lost every single time. The Mets have little interest in Guerrero because of his back. He toughed it out last year in order to get a new contract. Don't expect the same after you give him 75 million. He reminds me of Juan Gonzalez. He has the same "I can do things my way, because I have all the talent in the world" attitude. He is in baseball since he was a kid and can't speak a word of english. That says alot about him. The only way the Mets are interested is if the price is right.
As far as the A-Rod stuff goes, just drop it. That contract is an albatross that won't go away. Think of it this way. It is so bad, they are trading him for Ramirez. All the Mets had to do was say Yes and they could have had him, but think about it. He makes as much as any 2 ace pitchers on any team. John Wooden said it best when he said" Aplayer that makes a team great is more valuable than a great player".

I don't like the Mets but I read in teh paper, they plan on keeping the payroll at $80 million this year. That means they only have about $4 million to spend. So expect no one worth anything to come to the Mets.
