In my Pharmacy the other day, i met an old veteran who had been at Pearl Harbor, which is a pretty neat thing, cause i dont think there are too many of the old boys left. It was such a great privelege to talk with him about his experiences, and I bought up my grandfather, who had fought in the Pacific until the Japs took his hearing at Leyte, and remarked how much he hated General MacArthur. This old tiger concurred about hating MacArthur, said it seemed he was always to concerned about himself..

But anyway, there's not too many of these old guys left, and i'd just like to give those that went and did what they had to do a big "thank you" for saving our country...

It's not too often that Pearl Harbor day falls on a Sunday...I guess it's once every 8 years or something. I know it fell on a Sunday in 1980. I remember watching a Cleveland Browns game on NBC, and Dick Enberg or someone was talking about this being a day that will live in infamy, and I thought wow, what a historic day.

And the next day John Lennon was killed.

I'll let someone else quote Belushi.

We must never forget.

We also must do a better job of remembering our national heroes.
No, I'm not talking about the Jessica Lynches, I'm talking about the real deal.
In the last month or so, we lost 2 gen-you-wine heroes of the Pearl Harbor generation.
It's a national disgrace that the deeds and names of Mitchell Paige and Raymond G. Davis are not better known.

I still can't believe we let the Germans do that to us.

It came up in the conversation with this guy because my Grandfather hates MacArthur. Something about when he came ashore one time and didn't want to get his uniform dirty or something like that. This guy hated him too because he thought MacArthur was just way too full of himself and a martinet...which is true...

Hmm, never knew about that. I just hated him over Korea. Can't say you don't learn anything new at R&F.net...

My grandfather signed up because of Pearl Harbor and ended up on a PT boat in the Pacific for majority of the war. Actually met Jack Kennedy in "Miami" (This is according to him the other day...he's not senile, but is 86 and had a stroke a few years back. He sometimes substitutes the wrong word when he's speaking, hence why I'm not sure if he was actually on leave in "Miami" when this happened) while JFK was there recovering from HIS PT boat getting sliced in half by a Japanese ship.

It surprised me too. I always thought MacArthur was popular with the troops, but all the Vets I've talked to(at least from WW2) dont like him.

I wish there was someone left from the old WW1 "Rainbow Division" that MacArthur was in, I wonder how they felt about him...Maybe MacArthur was just trying to outdo his father, who won the Medal of Honor...

Too bad alot of americans do not remember december 7th.

My grandfather served under Gen Bradley in europe during WW2. He was more respected because he was a field general. Eisenhower and Mac Arthur were desk generals

My Grandpa didn't vote for Ike either time. But that was probably just because he was a Republican.

That's a bit unfair to MacArthur, who earned the Medal of Honor in WWI, and repeatedly displayed courage on the battlefield.
MacArthur was brilliant at times- see his campaigns on New Guinea and of course Inchon.
He was a prima donna and deserved to be sacked by Truman.
A very complex man, there is much to say, both good and bad about him.
Many Marines resent him because he refused to put the 4th Marines in for a unit citation for their performance in the Philippines after Pearl Harbor. He said something like the Marines had plenty enough awards.

God Bless all the veterans and their families. And Damn ben Affleck for ruining that movie.

That movie was ruined by the very fact it existed. Let's not to pretend that without Affleck it was "almost there" or anything.

45 minutes of it was some of the greatest cinema ever (the attack on Pearl Harbor). Too bad it was a 2 and half hour movie.

I always thought MacArthur was popular with the troops, but all the Vets I've talked to(at least from WW2) dont like him.

My grandfather was in the Pacific (Army Air Corps) and said that MacArthur was hated because he was an "Emperor" in both the Philippines and Japan.

Of course, he was called "Dugout Doug" by the troops after Roosevelt ordered him to leave Corregidor.

..."Emperor"...

Yeah, he carried on that way. He felt it to be appropriate. He had lived in the Philippines for many years and claimed an understanding of the oriental mindset.
He was extremely successful in Japan and we would be mighty fortunate if we could duplicate that success in Iraq.
Sadly, it's just not to be.

A good bio on MacArthur is American Caesar, by William Manchester.
