So me and this girl are talking to eachother, we've been on 2 dates and what not. Its all fun and stuff, until I try to buy her something. We went to get ice creams and it took 20 minutes to get her to let me buy her ice cream. Its happened before too. I really want to be the gentlemen. Her reasoning is that shes a femminist. I'm all for that, but I mean let me buy you something and be the man.

a girl that age probably has a pretty narrow view of what feminism entails. i don't even claim to understand it myself.

a few things:

1 - be glad she's not trying to get you to buy her shit. lots of girls are like that.

2 - you buying her ice cream does not make you "the man." that's a really silly gender classification. you can be just as much of a man even if she pays for her own ice cream. but beware if she asks fuck you with a strap-on; she might mean it.

3 - it could just be that she feels uncomfortable having you buy her stuff this early on.

4 - my best friend jack_doff could be right, and she just doesn't want to be indebted to you, or feel like you'll expect anything from her.

5 - see if you can get her to buy you stuff. that will make her feel that she's living up to her feminist ideals and you can get free shit. but then you may have to put out (see number 2).

i believe this is the second time you've posted about this already... offering a girl your coat, while nice, does not make you a superhero. it was thoughtful and the type of thing anyone should be willing to do for someone they care about. stop trying to get credit for it.

I think Ari makes some good points here, Keith. This girl is probably looking to keep things "even" since you're just getting to know each other (2 dates and all), and she probably views "feminist" as not letting a man take care of her, which is more "gender-equality". Being a gentleman is noble, but in this day and age but some women feel as though you're lording over them when you offer to pay or offer them your coat.

Next time, tell her that you'll pick up the ice cream on this occasion and next time she can spring for something. Work with her, and she'll be happier.

Then go out with one of her friends and do the same, even if she is grateful and then do the same to your family until we have a race of dirty snow/ice cream people!
