View Full Version : Why does my CD player set off store alarms?

Macy*s specifically.
I live 3 blocks away from Newport Center Mall. Everyday for the past 13 years, I've cut through the mall to get to my chosen mode of transportation to my job. Everytime I cut through Macy*s, my portable CD player (or cell phone) sets off the store detectors.
What gives?

It might have within it an anti theft device from when it was new, maybe within its shell. Or it could just have a component (probably the flexible metal of the headset) that the alarm thinks is one of the stores tags. Does it do it in other stores?

Perhaps you are tripping their "Winona Ryder" sensors by mistake.

It used to happen at Eddie Bauer.
But I HAVE noticed it's been happening more at Macy*s since the holiday season started. And I listen to my CD player everyday. Is it possible they can they "crank up" the security?

I once put one of these in my brothers sweatshirt hood and it would set off the alarms when he would go through stores. http://www.alltag-security.com/images/PICT_01_small.gif It might either be accidental by design, like the wires shape or maybe an overlooked tag.

this one time at the mall i kept walking into stores and setting off alarms, i couldnt figure out what it was. this one store actually searched my bag...it was also the day i had bought a box of condoms. so when they were looking through my bag they saw the bright greeness of the trojan twisted pleasure condoms....very embarrassing. it turns out that the condom box was the thing making the alarms go off.

sometimes my textbooks make the alarms go off in the library. then they'll always call me over, and go through my stuff, and desensitize all my books... not that they were sensitized in the first place. i always end up missing the elevator.

so when they were looking through my bag they saw the bright greeness of the trojan twisted pleasure condoms...are the twisted pleasure ones any good?

When I was in college, we used to carry floppy discs (this is what we used before cds, kids), and didn't want to put them through any magnetic fields, so we'd lift our backpacks as we walked in and out. The librarians knew us because we worked on the computer labs in the library as part of our jobs. Occassionally, a book or two would slip out without setting off the alarms, too. :) But we returned every book we borrowed.

I googled "How do anti-shoplifting devices work" and foung <a href="http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/anti-shoplifting-device4.htm">this</a>.
Your CD player, cell phone etc is probably mimicing the security tag or Macy's is using an old school anti-theft device that just isn't too accurate.
