All over the news Petitte is thisclose to signing with the Astros. If this happens your season is OVER. Way to Jack up ticket prices, sign 2 older relievers, fat back David Wells, and forget about your best pitcher. Boston now has a better lineup and staff and their about to get A-Rod. Ouch!

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

i heard this on my way home today. what a fucking mistake. spending way to much time on Shefield and now Petitte will be gone. he should have been priority number 1. who the hell is going to round out the staff...Mussina, Vazquez, Wells?, Contreras?, Leiber?.

if he is gone where do we go...Maddox(hope not), Ponson?...there is someone else i heard today, who i don't think would be bad, but i can't remember and its pissing me off. these guys should have been guys after Mussina, Vazquez and Petitte though.

Another problem is that the pitching staff will be completely right handed. Wells still has to have back surgery and probably won't be available until June.

This was the same situation back in 98 when Bernie was a free agent and reportedly was close to signing with boston. Who knows? they can still pull something out at the last minute. but it will suck to see him go

Yeah man. Wells' back surgery was a success, and there's talk of a minor league contract, with all kinds of conditions where if he pitches good he'll make anywhere from 3 to 5 million............why the hell not bring him back. The Yankees are gonna need all the pitching they can get if Pettitte leaves.

The reason I say egotistical is because they actually think that a curse is the only way they could possibly be denied a championship, that the ghost a Babe Ruth has hung around for 80 years just to DENY THEM. But, hey, NY Ranger fans thought the same thing a 10 years ago. Something about constant losing does something people.

Who cares. The Yankees offered him way more money for the same number of years (three). He would have accepted for that PLUS an extra year. Maybe it didn't occur to Boss Steinbrenner that Pettitte would take LESS money to play with Houston.

Granted, the way the Yankees throw money around at scrubs, they should have offered Pettitte the extra year. But they didn't, because they figured "hey, we already offered him more money, what the fuck, why do we have to suck his dick too?" I can see the reasoning.

True. People look for answers when there seem to be none. Personally, I blame it on poor managment and bad managers. I'm just happy that Red Sox finally realize that, yeah, a deep pitching staff is kinda crucial to winning a championship.

But will the Yankees losing Petitte rank up there with the Sox getting rid of Ruth as one of the most boneheaded moves in baseball history?

Andy Pettite is no Babe Ruth. Hell, if we are to judge solely on statistics, Vazquez is better. Can Vazquez handle New York and be as clutch as Pettite? Who knows, but if he can, he's an upgrade.

And if Kevin Brown can keep his body intact (big if) , he's an upgrade over Clemens.

What I'm most pissed at is the disrespect Steinbrenner showed Pettite over and over during his career, culminating in this pathetic attempt to resign him. If the couldn't get Vazquez, Steinbrenner would have gladly given Colon 4 years and 52 million. But not Pettite?!?! What more could he have possibly done?! Everytime the Yanks won a chmapionship, Pettite at some point saved their asses. IT'S JUST ONE MORE GODDAMNED YEAR!!!!!

No, let's spend the money on fucking Tom Gordon and Paul Quantrill!! Let's spend our time begging a pitcher 9 years older and 100 pounds heavier to take a minor league contract! Let's wine a dine a human cancer to take the SAME DEAL YOU ARE OFFERING PETTITE!?!?!?! Can you honestly say that Sheffield and Pettite are equal? How many championships has Sheffield won? Let's get Kenny Lofton and Rafael Palmeiro!

Hell, why don't we just release everybody and sign the 1995 AL All-Star Team!!!!! THAT'S GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andy Pettite is no Babe Ruth.

Maybe I should have used the "Red Sox let Clemens go" example instead.

I don't know what the fuck Big Stein was thinking. You do NOT lose Petitte.

Still, I wouldn't count the Yankees out. They have a lot of talent with a lot of experience. Besides, there will be mid-season trades aplenty next season I'm sure.

no, petitte is no ruth, but i do think this is one of the most bonehead moves. i think petitte has proven himself over and over. through the years he's been their most consistant pitchers and one of the best in the league. they totally screwed themselves. i hope george rots in hell.

it was Petitte's call. He wanted to play close to home and nothing was going to change that.

As a side note, the red Sox offered him 4 years and 52 million, and he said "i would never play for the Red Sox" Even in leaving the Yanks, he shows his loyalty.

The Yankees, no i'm sorry, GEORGE STEINBRENNER, did not do all he could to get him back. He could have offered 4 years and 52 million and had a real chance to get Pettite back. He could have made even the slightest gesture to show how much the Yankees wanted him back. He didn't because a 31 year old clutch, World Series winning left handed pitcher is just something the Yankees can't afford.

$5 million middle relief pitchers, on the other hand, they can't enough of.

I'm very upset to hear the news today. With Clemens gone, Andy Pettitte was our best pitcher and would've been our #1 guy next year. He's an excellent post season pitcher who rarely disappoints and it's been great to see him really develop in recent years. All I can do is hope the Yankees pick up someone even half as good as Pettitte and that 2004 is the worst season of Pettitte's career.

Once again, it is going unnoticed that the Yanks do not have a left handed starter. This is crucial to winning in Yankee stadium with its short right field porch that makes lefthanded power hitters drool. Why do you think these managers make each other crazy with all this lefty/ righty bullshit? Because it matters.
I guarantee the Yanks will be knocking on the Mets door in Sept. for Leiter or Glavine. No Yankee dynasty has ever survived without a top lefty.

You've cut off your nose to spite your face, Andy...and why? Because Mr. Steinbrenner didn't respect you. Well, George is an inept evaluator of talent. The organization all but begged Mel to stick around another year just to sweeten the pot for your oversensitive ass, but you just couldn't ignore the big dummy like everyone else on the payroll & just feel the love from EVERYONE ELSE around you.

You were brought up in an organization that is founded on championships, but for the few years you have left in your career you would rather play for one who's next playoff series victory will be its' first. Well, then...the hell with you. I loved you as a Yank, but may you now rot in the Texas heat. Enjoy the hitter-friendly confines of that pimple-on-the-ass-of-the-baseball-world ballpark (whatever its' name is this year).

But, I must admit, you've earned the right to say:

The Astros have one of the best rotations in baseball now, certianly better than the Yankees at this point. Anybody trashing the Astros shows their baseball ignorance. Every year the Yankees have made the playoffs the last 10 years, the Astros have made it or have been close to making it, and with half the payroll. Now they have a rotation with two young stud pitchers and Pettite. And they have a lineup with Lance Berkman, Jeff Bagwell and Jeff Kent.

I don't feel as if I trashed the Astros by saying they have a hitter-friendly ballpark & a less than stellar post season history. I am anything but baseball-ignorant, and highly offended at the insinuation. My post was merely an expression of my anger over this whole situation, directed simultaneously at Andy for leaving & George for not appreciating him enough to do everything in his power to make sure it didn't happen.

Well, I said that out of frustration to every dumbass I have heard acting like the Yankees are the only possible team that can go to the postseason and the Astros are some kind of Detroit Tigers-like shit organization. Just getting this deal done in the first place disproves that notion. And, right now, I'd say the Yankees are no guarantee to go to the postseason.

Sucks to be a Yankee fan right now.........and your future doesn't look so bright either. What do you expect from a owner who hires George Costanza.
